Well I suppose those cheap, tacky and somewhat chavvy flags that people put on their cars will be around for a while longer then. I'll be glad to see the back of them, but not Englands' world cup hopes.

They are the 8th best team out of 202, they are Everton in the premiership and not liekly to win it but should make the quarter finals - anything more is success and over achieving.
Going out to Germany would be no shame as they are a higher ranked team but shouldn't face them till the quarters and if they do face each other in the next round it is due to failure in the group stage.
Slovenia, Algeria and the USA are ranked 25,30 and 14 out of 202 respectively so hardly minnows and they didn't lose to any of them.
They didn't scrape a 1-0 win and should of won by far more today.
The World cup has finally started for England and I personally feel excpet for Argentina nobody has played better than England did for 75 minutes today.
The worry is that Holland and Portugal can play better and equalled their form and Brazil and Spain can play a lot better.
Rooney is not and has never been supposed to be the best in the world but one of them but so far hasn't hit his best, all players have bad games and even tournaments. Ronaldo has only had one good half, Messi has been brilliant, kaka worse than Rooney. Is Ronaldo and Kaka now overrated?

This world cup is working out like WW2 - France have forfeited, the USA turned up late, and England are left to fight the germans!

When was the last time Scotland got out of the group stage in a World cup? Hell, when was the last time Scotland even qualified?

Useless twats.

As for Northern Ireland.... Meh.

I detect a Scot having a dig and supporting the krauts! OK lets look at the history of Scotland as a football team :)

Scotland are the joint oldest national football team in the world, alongside England, whom they played in the world's first international football match in 1872

Scotland have qualified for the FIFA World Cup and the UEFA European Football Championship several times, but have never progressed beyond the first stage of a tournament, 138 yrs without a cup

Biggest defeat - Uruaguay7-0 Scotland...

England have a better record than Scotland so why the sour grapes?

Incorrect, they have won 41 tournaments, British home championships, and how can you compare a Nation of 5 million people to England?

The team are to play in an all red kit today for the first time since 1962.

They should always, always play in red. They seem to do much better in red kit.
Call me superstitious!

I thought they played well today, like the team the supporters have been behind, rather
than that shower of shites who have been playing in their place recently.
So, Germany on Sunday?
I hope it's today's team playing.

bet you wish you could have the chance to do that eh?

back to England, nice to see our jimmy back on form and put some decent crosses in, but the question of creasehead in the left wing remains as he is like a school kid chasing the ball rather then sticking to his position and supporting shagger cole.

I've just watched the highlights and but for some great saves by their keeper, the woodwork and a slight loss of composure on a couple of occasions, we could've run out 6-0 winners!

I think we played better because they knew it was sh*t or bust. The other games were like "whatever we do don't lose!" and we should be ok. Now it's knockout stage it will suit England more, I expect us to put in another performance like that one, hopefully it'll be enough to get past Germany. I watched them play Ghana and they were exposed at the back on several occasions, so there is hope!

I think it's good to see the positivity back in the Ingerlash media.

Up until yesterday it was all doom and gloom and lets all hate Terry/Capello/The pitch???

Within seconds of the final whistle Sky Sports News were back plotting the route to the final.

Georgie Thompson did look good today though!

Is anyone else here slightly shocked at how England won today?

They were still very poor, but they did play a lot better than against Algeria and the USA. If England do not raise their game by a lot against Germany + 1 Polish Player then England will be flying home by economy class.

How anyone from the United Kingdom could cheer on Germany is a mystery to me. UNTIED Kingdom should UNITE together.

Did you see the Germany + 1 Polish Player against Ghana?

I was quite surprised to hear that the Boateng Brothers apparently played for both teams.. apparently Kevin Prince Boteng and Jerome Boateng are brothers! One plays for Germany, the other plays for Ghana. I guess you could say one was in the other boat!

And we all know that Lukas Podolski is Polish. He was Born in Poland, his father Waldemar Podolski used to play for Poland and his Mother (Krystyna Podolska) Represented Poland in the Olympics....yet he....plays for Germany

England really do need to raise their game. I hope England win, but Ghana would have been easier than Germany, especially now Klose is back.

Im not a big football fan but....Maybe England played better and had more players to choose from when we had English players, these days we have a lot of foreign players playing for the top clubs so when its time to represent our country we are limited.

I was also thinking about acclimatisation, most of our players are used to playing through the winter months, its been too hot here to be playing football and I can imagine its hotter in Africa! Not making excuses but it would explain the lethargy.

I agree J47 that people who are born in a certain country should only be allowed to play for that country yet some people have dual citizenship. It has been an issue for contention in a few sports. I think we had a Canadian tennis player a few years ago playing for us Greg Rusedski. We also had Zola Budd the barefoot runner who was African born representing England!

For a relatively small country I think we do quite well considering the lack of funding and facilities we tend to have in many sports.

Podolski qualifies to play for Germany as his grandad had German citizenship.

[Germany + 1 Polish ]

Klose is also Polish!

Now, a Scot supporting France over Engl.... No, wait, they've already gone home haven't they?
Supporting Germany over England, though? I'm very, very surprised.

One of our home nations made it through, how does it hurt to give them support?
If it was between all or any of the home nations I could understand divided loyalties.
I still remember watching a Euro 96 match between Scotland and England and finally giving up, deciding that only one of them could win and it would be good either way. Of course, neither of them made it to the final.
