You can put together a nice Highland outfit for less than $5000. A good, Scottish made kilt with a full 8 yards of tartan and 16 ounce wool runs between $450-650, depending on the maker and the tartan. Lighter weight and less yardage equal savings too. I picked up a nice authentic Montrose dress jacket for about $120 on eBay...like new except for a heavy smoke smell which came out in dry cleaning. A good kilt belt about $45-50. A dress sporran is $150-$300, but a day sporran is much less. Ghillie brogues are about $110. Kilt hose are maybe $15 for a serviceable mass market wool, or about $75 for a hand knitted set from somewhere like Arran. I've never found hand-knitted hose except in tartan shops in Edinburgh, though. Flashes are maybe $8, unless you need flashy flashes. A sgian dubh is, in my opinion, essential and might cost from $60-$200 depending on ornamenation. I like them basic and I picked up a perfectly fine stag horn one for about $40 on eBay. I also like having a good flask, and I got a nice one, though not silver or pewter, for about $15. I haven't really priced shirts, as I just wear a white dress shirt and my jabot and cuffs came with my jacket. I like balmorals, and picked up a heavy wool one for $50-60 but you don't really need headgear for evening attire. Likewise, a dirk or basket-hilt sword is overkill for evening wear, except maybe on Burns night to slice the haggis with! I occasionally wear a great kilt ensemble with which they look more appropriate.

I played with a pipe band for a while and that is the best way to get a kilt ensemble to wear, as they usually loan the stuff to you while you are an active member, then you can accumulate personal items at a more leisurely pace.

I've found that women dig kilts at Renn Faires and Highland Games and St. Patty's Day celebrations and the like, especially frustrated drunk mature women...the Desperate Housewives type, except usually not so bonnie. Also, if you look like you are part of a Scottish style wedding party at a bar, then you are OK. I probably wouldn't show up for a date, especially the first, wearing a kilt. Oh, and definitely wear a kilt traditional style, unless you are giving a demonstration at a grade school or something. When a woman asks you what you are wearing under it, and she decides to find out for herself, you wouldn't want to disappoint ;-)

I also dig plaid on women, but not kilts. Kilts are for men. Kilted skirts and tartan mini-skirts and plaid low-rider pants are for women. There are differences. The only women that should be wearing kilts are Highland Dancers, and that is only because the dances were originally meant to be danced by men in kilts. Now, though, the style is dominated by adolescent girls.

Just wanted to mention the sportkilt, pretty common in Highland games and cheaper than a traditional dress kilt.

Aye.....besides, who pays $5000 for a kilt? Lad, obviously you haven't grown in Scotland or Ireland for that matter.

Yes, even us Irish wear kilts, but for certin reesons. My father is from Edinbergh, Scotland and we all had kilts to wear upon the days of your childhood. Never paid no $5000 for it though.

By the way, the sportkilt is a lot cheapr if you lookin' for a made, dress kilt.

They look sexy on females, but that just harkens back to skirts.

Haven't done this before but here goes. I was in Scotland last summer, standing on the battlefields of Culloden, following a 6'4" Scot with a huge head of long red curls blowing in the wind in full Scottish regalia. I could have knocked him over the head and dragged him home, he was soooooooooo sexy. Alot of men there wear their kilts and I think they are incredibly sexy, but that's just me I guess... They tell me to love Scottish men, but for god's sake don't marry them !! That otta elicit some response from the Scot's sector!!

I love seeing a man in a kilt. Shows confidance. as for paying 5,000.00 for a proper one.. Nope Do not think so. They make them here at the gaelic college for less than that. As to wearing them daily, hmm I think seeing them worn not that often is perhaps part of what makes them sooo appealing.

I've worn the highland dancing kilt and I love them. and I also love kilt short skirts.. lol Love those. Okay I love pratically anything at all that is plaid.

that depends, is the guy irish? if yes, then yes

there is more than one kind of kilt.... the irish kilt is a solid colour while the scottish kilt is in a tartan

Kilts are for males - please ladies look it up - what you wear is a tartan skirt not a kilt.

as a highland dancer i own and a kilt and wear it often. however yes the kilt is traditional means wear and we only wear our kilts while doing the 'male' dances such as the fling or sword.

ot: i love men in kilts and yes would date one if i were single

I wear kilts from time to time. I have a large chunk of scottish heritage and display my kilt proudly, however I wear boxers underneath, because I'd rather die than let anyone see my junk dangling in the wind on a windy day lol.

I'd maybe wear a school girl kilt for someone I was dating if they were into that but not out in public.

I dated a man who belonged to a scottish army reserve so he wore a kilt on some occassions. He informed me the unwritten rule was they all had to be commando under it. The kilt didn't really do anything for me even though it supposedly drives some women crazy. I just used to tease him about the whole outfit. He was a very manly man in physique and I would just bug him about the school girl knee highs, skirt and purse. LOL At functions I would ask him if he would keep my lipstick in his purse. ROFL and tease the other soldiers about their skirts. Not my thing but very noble profession so I guess I have to cut soldiers some slack. Men in skirts just don't do it for me. And a kilt is a skirt just admit it. LOL. Whatever makes you happy though I say.

Kilts I gotta say are pretty cool. Mostly only if you're actually Scottish/Irish. I went to the Highland games in Maxville ON this summer...saw a guy wearing a cowboy hat and a kilt! I was in love!!!

I am a Duncan, and proud to be one, i have a kilt in Modern Duncan plaid tailor made for about 350$ canadian. It's done properly with the right pleats and lengths... i only usualy wear it on special occasions... ie weddings and prom... but the few times i've worn it out... man oh man... beware...you may get raped

i love it... but hey... what man wouldn't? and besides... it feels so great to be "free" and it's so "convenient".. hahaha
