Just to clear something up. There is a difference between what people on food stamps can do with an EBT card than what those on general relief can do. Those strictly on food stamps can not get cash with their card, they can't buy fast food, booze and etc.
Not true; there are no food stamps. The EBT cards, are accepted in multitudes of places. And here in L.A. at over 500 restaurants.
by Vanessa Romo Marketplace Morning Report for Wednesday, February 17, 2010 TEXT OF STORY Steve Chiotakis: There are some new signs luring customers into fast food restaurants around Los Angeles these days. No, they're not glossy close-ups of half-pound beef patties. They are plain white and blue signs, saying: "Now Accepting EBT" -- that's shorthand for food stamps. Reporter Vanessa Romo has more.
Maria Ochoa: I always eat cold food, but I'm tired because sometimes we want some hot meals. And now that I know that they get the EBT, I come here and eat a hot meal. EBT stands for Electronic Benefits Transfer. It's a debit card for food stamps.
Ochoa, a woman in her 50's with red permed hair and polished nails, is now living in that gold Lexus. Six months ago, she would have been hard-pressed to find a restaurant that takes food stamps. Now El Pollo Loco, Dominos and Jack in Box are part of L.A. county's Restaurant Meals program.
Lydia Erviti oversees the program, which includes more than 500 restaurants.
Lydia Erviti: Our goal is to provide healthy meals for the homeless, disabled and elderly participants. Especially the homeless because they don't have space to store food or cook.

First of all, you can't make that statement unless you know how much "anyone here" makes, and you don't.
If you can't use mathematical models based on what you already know (the median income in any given area), then that's not something I can help with. But that model does dictate that for every 100 people in here, 1.2 of those people make $200K and over. Now, we can speculate that that figure is higher because where we live, but even increasing that number to 5 out of 100 people still makes running into that group a rarity.
Second, please show me where on an application form for a mortgage it asks in what percentage of earners you are?
Did I say somewhere that question was posed on an application?

| How Would You Fix CA? Posted: 2/15/2012 7:51:06 PM | The bleeding hearts have ruined this state to the point I'm not sure that it can ever recover. I know of people who abuse welfare, and it's NOT so uncommon as you claim. I hate to go racial, but the biggest problem at this point, aside from political correctness, is that latinos have such a big voice, and generally are out to take advantage of the system. Look at Steve Lopez, the writer for the L.A. Times. Lopez has never seen an illegal he didn't love, or a tax he objects to, etc. , it's always about "helping" latinos and screwing everybody else in the process. The Dream Act is sheer insanity; it's entirely possible that some illegal student is going to get a free ride to college while deserving white kids whose families actually paid into the system will go without help. The most troubling issue is that every group is allowed to organize and advocate for their own interests....every group for the exception of white people. If white people try to organize in any way they are always demonized by the media, called "racists" etc. I have a feeling that push is coming to shove very soon. | |

Wrong. EBT cards are not all the same. There are those for food only and they do have the restrictions I stated.
|
| How Would You Fix CA? Posted: 2/15/2012 8:48:38 PM | ^^^^^^
There are no restrictions as to restaurants on ANY EBT cards. As the woman in charge of the program said, the homeless, who get these cards, have no where to cook.
Lydia Erviti: Our goal is to provide healthy meals for the homeless, disabled and elderly participants. Especially the homeless because they don't have space to store food or cook.
I know you are misinformed but if you think you are right please cite your source as I have done.
|
| How Would You Fix CA? Posted: 2/15/2012 8:55:35 PM | | ^^^So your gripe is that they can get hot food? Already prepared? Obviously, that's more useful to people who maybe homeless and have no place to cook, so what's your beef? | |
|
| How Would You Fix CA? Posted: 2/15/2012 10:28:13 PM | | Yes there are restrictions as I have said. Even at the store when an EBT card is swiped there are options to choose from for the different uses that the card is designated for. Just ask any clerk at Wal Mart or any grocery store. Just because a fast food place says it accepts EBT doesn't mean it will work if the EBT card is for food only. | |
|
| How Would You Fix CA? Posted: 2/16/2012 1:12:48 AM | Ok, my last post on this. You think you are correct, but the head of the agency that regulates EBT expenditures at restaurants says all EBT cards can be used at restaurants is incorrect.
Why not cite your source; surely you do not expect us to believe you are the final authority on EBT.
|
| How Would You Fix CA? Posted: 2/16/2012 8:59:54 AM | It does not matter what card is good for what.
There are some that truly need assistance that are people that have contributed in the past and have fallen on hard times. I don't have an issue with this.
Then there are those (and you can be sure there are plenty) that have figured out how to "work" the system and get every benefit possible that is available and live comfortably while sitting on their ass.
And the bottom of the barrel are the ones that are not even here legally who have contributed nothing and are into this routine.

| How Would You Fix CA? Posted: 2/16/2012 9:05:50 AM | | If you don't believe me, simply ask the checkout person at Wal-Mart or your nearest grocery store what screen pops up when someone swipes a food only loaded EBT card, what they can and can't buy, etc. Then find someone that has a food only loaded EBT card and ask them if they have ever been able to successfully use it at a fast food place that displays a sign saying they accept EBT. The answer will be "no". | |

You are apparently in favor of more intrusive government and higher taxes to pay for this sort of thing.
Therein lies the problem, that you can't write any code or rules that can completely isolate the needy from the greedy, all things being equal. The only consolation you have is that pretty much anyone who is qualifying for food assistance not likely in a happy position.
And the bottom of the barrel are the ones that are not even here legally who have contributed nothing and are into this routine.
And the best way to deal with this, if the wealthy employers prefer hiring this group to natives that demand higher wages, is to write a decent policy that does tax their labor so that they too can pay into the system they use.

Hearsay should not lead to definitive conclusion. Now if you worked at Wal-Mart and saw with your own eyes, that would carry some weight.
|
| How Would You Fix CA? Posted: 2/16/2012 12:25:28 PM | | An EBT card issued for general assistance would allow all kinds of purchases. Once again, not all EBT cards are equal. | |

| How Would You Fix CA? Posted: 7/18/2012 9:19:00 AM | I'm not sure California CAN be fixed. Similar to a heroin addict, California has way too many needle-marks from political corruption, and in the same way, California will be dragged into rehab, kicking and screaming, never admitting that they need a "cure", but rather the next "fix". | |

| How Would You Fix CA? Posted: 7/23/2012 7:28:10 PM | Fix Cali??
Here's a few suggestions... Legalize Weed. Nothin' wrong with getting high. Legalize Prostitution...girls are doing it anyways on backpage (thank CNN for the insight). California should be like Nevada and have organized prostitution like they do in Europe. As long as the girls get checked regularly I see nothing wrong with it. Sex sells, plus that's extra tax revenue for the state. That's business opportunities for crafty businessmen just like the guy in Nevada. Release the vast majority of drug related offenses. If crack head Willie want to smoke Crack...let him smoke crack. If Jimmy want to do Meth...let em. Tax payers shouldn't be paying millions of dollars each year to keep the weed smokers and crack heads behind bars, but yet cut college funding. Prisons should only be for likes of the Charles Mansons, Grim Sleepers, and Bonnie and Clydes. The 3 strikes law would be modified. Gang laws would stay in effect...however, I'd overturn the gun laws. I say that because the street gangs are going to have them regardless if they're laws or not. I feel a person should be able to own a Semi-Automatic weapon like a M16 or M4 given the proper background check. Right to bear arms is the 2nd Amendment. I'd also adopt Arizona's Immigration law...Sorry.

|
| How Would You Fix CA? Posted: 7/29/2012 12:24:32 PM | Well, I am a big fan or any and all governments being required to do all of the following: First, spend no more than 95% of last years revenue. That extra 5% pays off current debts, and eventually goes into an emergency fund, with emergency being defined so that sticky fingers can't just make up reasons to get at it. Think, nation is under direct attack, natural disaster that exceeds FEMA funding, etc. If the budget is reached, then the budget is reached. Services shut down. The people will have to decide to either increase funding, or cut something. Personally, I lean toward cutting something (government will always find more ways to spend money!) I'm also a big fan of eliminating political parties. If people had to run on a platform, rather than a party line, it might produce some interesting results. Maybe there would be some interest in education on the issues in the general population. I would remove most lawyers from office as of the start of next term. The new people in office would be told that to fix the laws. 'The law shall be readable for a person who meets 12th grade reading level, and shall take no more than a week for an orator to read aloud.' If people can't read and understand the laws, how can they follow them? Lawyers would be allowed to run again the next term, but the requirement on laws being readable would remain. Finally, I would enforce the idea that maintenance of public works and services comes before new pet projects. For example, the high speed rail that we are building is a new project... and in the mean time the roads are falling apart. We can't even maintain what we have now, so why build more? | |
|
| How Would You Fix CA? Posted: 7/29/2012 1:24:21 PM | ^^^^^^ Robert, as you age, you will discover that "logic" and "politics " do not mix. The "high speed rail" cesspool is a perfect example. It started out sounding good, but do you really want to go 250 mph on an actively seismic route? Second, who will want to travel from nowhere to nowhere? Third, why did the estimated cost triple, even before it was begun? This "project", which will take a hundred years to pay for, if ever, was never about progress, it's simply about giving lucrative contracts to unions who have sponsored politicians and given them lucrative jobs in turn. One dirty hand washes the other, THAT'S politics. | |
|
| How Would You Fix CA? Posted: 7/30/2012 2:13:36 PM | I know. It was just something that was an easy target for comparison, ala adding more straw after you break the camel's back. It is a good point to bring up, however, I would argue that is the norm for government as well as politics. Looking back through history, it is a rare thing to find a government that was not corrupt and that worked for the betterment of the people.
As for the rail, it wouldn't be a bad idea if all of the following were true: We had a high enough population density (like, say, Japan does); it was cheap enough to be practical; we could maintain current infastructure; and if it would benefit the people of the state overall. It doesn't meet any of those, however... it will not even reach people in most of the state at this point! One thing I would add to your explanation of it is that it is seen as a 'legacy project' for the governor. One of those 'look what I did was I not so great' egotastic splurges that seem to be even more broken than the rest of CA.
Well, thanks for the reply. Glad to know you feel the same way about that idiocy!

The only PETA I am in favor of is PETA WILSON - here is a google images search link for Peta Wilson:
