| Rap Music and White Men Posted: 5/30/2012 7:51:01 PM | Hrm... I think I'm going to go with many of the posts here saying you might be looking for racism. It is certainly interesting that you have noticed this "except rap" trend on male Caucasian profiles, but real world experience no doubt lets you know that non-white people can also dislike rap. I mean, I don't particularly enjoy country music, but that doesn't make me a racist. I am curious, however, why these men have to explicitly say they don't like rap.
Perhaps they are simply trying to find a woman with similar dislikes instead of just likes. I know if I say "I really don't like bagpipes", the chances of someone saying "OMG I DISLIKE BAGPIPES TOO!" is rare. If anything the response would be "really? I don't really think I've listened to bagpipes...." Whereas with rap, if you say you dislike it, the chances of someone saying they also dislike it is much, much higher - simply because of the presence rap has. This applies to disliking any of the other major genres of music.
Don't stress yourself out over it. If anything, ask them why they dislike it (if that is what is turning you off bout them) and see how they respond. If they can't respond why, then maybe you can accuse them of simply being ignorant. But if they present a fair argument, which is very possible, let them think what they think and like what they like. | |

Makes a lot of sense to me.
But to people that assume the worse when they don't get a response - just bear in mind if people don't respond it 'might' be they are doing other things or don't want contact with you for whatever reason. | |

| Rap Music and White Men Posted: 5/31/2012 11:08:46 PM | On a slight tangent in line with everyone pointing out the plenty of deep hip hop that’s out there (I’d add that in addition to the following artist, everyone who made such a post should immediately get Dessa (of Doomtree)’s solo album Broken Code), here’s something else that will blow anyone’s mind who thinks rap is all about black guys degrading women: www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3_2hJfhwro (Lowkey, Something Wonderful)
Or this masterpiece eight minute track from Immortal Technique: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bv7w200rrcs, one of the most story–driven and emotional songs I’ve ever heard. (Most people just pause in silence for a few minutes by the time the track ends, including all the people who know nothing about hip hop I’ve ever played it for.) | |

| Rap Music and White Men Posted: 6/5/2012 11:33:30 PM | The mainstream scene doesn't help raps image because that's what people expect to see and hear and that's what sells on the market; those images and words depicted are what create those stereotypes in the first place. Any off topic, unique, or even just some unnoticeable newcomer with a sound that doesn't market or fit the industry standard gets swept under the rug and not noticed except by the genre's true fans (aka: underground.)
So is it racial... I can't really give a yes or a no on it; I hate country music, so does that mean I hate white people? No, but I have known several white and asian people who've hated rap and were skeptical around me because of it. Context is everything and just hating/disliking something is not always a sign of something being racist, unless of course their response is "I hate _______ people" and they want to treat you like crap. My dad hates rap, so is it to assume that he's racist to his own kind? No, he just doesn't like it. Again, it's all about context. | |

| Rap Music and White Men Posted: 6/6/2012 2:34:35 AM | A local radio station plays special theme weekends.
One theme is "80's music that doesn't suck."
They play hardly any 80's music.
Now I don't suppose that means they hate people who lived through the 80's.
Or like 80's music.
Just maybe.. pity them! | |

| Rap Music and White Men Posted: 6/26/2012 10:55:19 PM | why does the thread focus on men? many women say "i love all kinds of music except ... " the last part is often rap, i see it all the time. and really who cares there are white women on here that will only date black men and just say its a preference. even more would never date a black man and never admit it but some will.
i personally don't have anything against rap if it's good. but it's not my style. fact is most of it is idiotic and if anything brings cause for racism. people don't like stereotypes especially negative ones and they constantly fall into them and wonder why things are a certain way. if i wore tight jeans, and a cowboy hat everywhere and someone called be a honky redneck could i blame them? i might not like it if that was my style but i'd have to accept that people found it silly at some point. if you have a problem with how people react to rap write a better rap song without the negative subject matter. there is nothing wrong with singing about sex and hard times, i love blues music, and some people love country which just replaces sex with love so the church goers don't get uncomfortable. take the macho gang-banger image and the womanizing out of it and it will have more respect, then again nobody will listen because you wont be able to shock people as easily so you'll have to write really clever lyrics.
when i go to the bar i'll put some old school rap on the jukebox. stuff that was out when i was growing up as a throwback. funny thing is i didn't like the stuff then. but it's grown on me. i'm not in anyway racist. prejudice is human nature and i might not be too friendly if you look like you just got out of prison, black or white. but the problem with the image of rap is the scene. not racism. | |

| Rap Music and White Men Posted: 7/18/2012 9:22:16 PM | I hate rap and what passes for R&B these days, but I love motown (or alot of it, never a big Marvin Gaye fan...). It's kinda funny though, most of the older black guys I know around here (being TN, not POF) don't much like rap either and a few of them love country and bluegrass but I think it's part of the culture here, or was when they were younger. Most seem to enjoy blues and jazz (again older, like me, they tend to listen to what they did growing up like we all do) which is cool by me since that's what I'M into as well.
Back in the early 80s I didn't think that hip hop would ever catch on, I missed the boat on that one. I was a metalhead back then (still am) and it kinda came and went but rap got HUGE. | |

| Rap Music and White Men Posted: 8/7/2012 11:13:17 AM | The first few iterations of my profile distinctly expressed my disdain for Rap and a few other genres. But I had trouble sticking by it because there are always exceptions, whether out of irony or genuine appreciation, in any genre. Plus I didn't feel like being a negative nancy was really conducive to a good profile. Instead, now I just briefly list a few distasteful ingredients that make up some of my unfavored genres and leave it at that.
A lack of interest in Rap is not an indicator of racism, whereas assuming so actually is rather prejudicial. I just don't like excessive vulgarity, perpetual negativity and exploitation, large egos, and highly derivative beats or melodies in my music, which, with a few exceptions, is what the majority of Rap is (or has become) to me. Hardcore metal and pretentiously whiny rock also rub me the same way.
And yes, when I actually say I like most styles of music, I mean it. I actually have very specific, artistically critical reasons for disliking the few genres/styles that I do.
And to be honest, I tend to more quickly flip past a profile if I DO see rap included either exclusively or in a very short list of favorite music. If Rap makes it into somebody's shortlist, without any indication that they generally have very broad musical tastes, it just doesn't sound like we'd be a good match, personality-wise. | |

In the male profiles on a lot of dating sites they express their music likes and then always end the sentence with: "Except Rap". Why is this necessary? I don't see them expressing their dislike of Country, bagpipe, accordian, grunge, techno, emo or opera music. I'm sure there are a TON of men who dislike these genre's yet they choose to single out "Rap" music. Why is that? I'm truly curious because it "feels" racist to me. Because it is so popular right now I want to make sure to any woman reading my profile that I will not listen to rap or hip hop. It's nothing to do with race for me. I just hate the sound. If opera becomes as big as hip hop I will mention my hate for it also! | |

| Rap Music and White Men Posted: 12/10/2012 11:12:37 AM | | I personally have no problems with Rap & Hip Hop,just the commercial shit which is in the charts.Political Rap is fantastic and the best protest music at the moment, especially with the "occupy" movement in the USA. Personally I prefer Bassline and UK Garage but anything other than that commercial stuff. | |

| Rap Music and White Men Posted: 12/12/2012 7:14:57 PM | I can't tolerate straight up gangster rap. Rap rock and hip hop are a little different for me. Being someone who is musically inclined, I prefer listening to music that includes the use of a variety of instruments, always enjoyed The Beastie Boys for that reason, and The Roots are another good group I would lump in there, musicality within a genre that generally doesn't see many artists adopting various types of instruments. Then you get more rap rock like Street Sweeper Social Club, a side project duo featuring Boots Riley from The Coop and Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine who are another rap rock band that I do enjoy and the reason I like those kinds of groups is because their music speaks more to what the true origins of rap are back in the early days of the genre. When you look at old rap groups like Public Enemy, their music was so much more anti-establishment as well as gangster then what rap has become, which is quite the inverse, it's pretty much all gangster and very few artists rap about the real things the world faces today. Maybe the 80's was a different time period, but rap in the 80's during tough economic times was as relevant then as it is today, in a world so full of greed and corruption where the average man is struggling to get by.
I also kind of don't like the whole mantra of rap music these days, and people try to lump rap fans with the whole wannabe gangster crowd. I generally don't like rap, but I am not completely ignorant towards it. | |

| Rap Music and White Men Posted: 12/15/2012 8:26:06 AM | Fantastic point JJ Junior. There are a lot of idiots on here who hate other genres of music (I'm not mentioning any names but you have an idea who ) I absolutely agree with you.Why don't they live and let live and not go on other genres threads who hate the music. RESPECT TO YOU BRO! | |

| Rap Music and White Men Posted: 12/15/2012 8:42:09 AM | Honestly ,Today's Rap sucks I don't waste my time with it unless it is old school and has a message Most Rap is a bunch of nonsense you learn to appreciate real musical talent when you can tell the chords being strung on a Guitar or keys to a piano and how much effort is being put into it
It's not racist for people who don't want to listen to B this N that Mf all the time , Some of us do have kids and don't need to hear the repeat from our children
I'm more or less a person who doesn't participate in Stealing ,Selling Drugs or Making women whores or even Paying for one so why would I want to listen to the Lifestyle if i live better then that Think about it
BTW Rap is Mostly Popular from ages 15-25 unless you are one of these people who love going to jail and loosing your mind cause someone looked at you wrong or funny ,That is pretty much the ages that listen to it unless you enjoy the Lifestyle and if you're a grown man living like that be ashamed | |

When I read that in a mans' profile it is a total turnoff. It puts up a huge flag that says: I am intolerant of the music of a generation, I am intolerant of people of color or simply intolerant in general. In addition it leverages the profile writers ability to condemn using a public forum to exhibit their bigotry. Why specifically point out this one genre of music? There are ton's of genre's which exhibit suicide, murder, rape, crime, rage against police etc.
I only have seen caucasian men write this....something to think about guys.
While I think you mean well, you go too far. 1)It is not just men who have this in their profiles. 2)"Rap" is not the only music of this generation 3)"Rap" music is not the only musical genre of people of color 4)Caucasian is based upon a myth anyway although many are still foolish enough to believe in such
I do think that Rap music gets a ...well bad rap. Of course it is partially due to the ignorance of the industry and the ignorance of those who paint it with a wide brush. There are many rap "artists" I simply do not listen to any longer. There is a huge portion of the genre that I simply cannot tolerate. It is not the entire genre because there are artists like Mos Def, Olmeca, Nas, Common, Immortal Technique, Lupe Fiasco, PRT, Myka 9 and The Roots that appeal to me. There is a lot of music labeled as country that I'd much rather listen to than SOME music labeled as rap. Of course, someone else' ignorance and broad scoping stereotyping should not lead to your doing the same. Perhaps it is "code" for some people. I submit that it may not be for many others. I do not like heavy metal and bluegrass...nor most country outside of what is actually southern rock or countrified pop fusion labeled as country. What does that mean? I feel it means I just have excellent taste in music. | |

| Rap Music and White Men Posted: 12/15/2012 7:46:53 PM | "devil's advocate: saw a white englishman posted he hated rap and country so there are exceptions..."
In my periamblings on dating sites, the middle-aged white women all say, "except RAP and country."
so I had to put in my profile, "in music I enjoy best the genre of RAP-country fusion."
I am not typical so I don't count. I like RAP. Hip hop, too. I got used to it when the kids upstairs played it incessantly. I lived in a basement apartment then, and first I wanted to kill myself for two weeks, then for the next two weeks after that I took a seven-hour walk twice a day to avoid having to listen to it, and at the forty-day mark or so, I loved it. I just needed to get used to it, that's all.
yes, I agree that white men and white women, especially middle aged, all put down rap a somthing they don't like. It's not so much racial hatred, but a trend. It's not racial hatred that they each and all like moonlight walks by the lake, or intimate dinners, or getting smashed and screwing their brains out. this, or some of this, they also all write.
but totally independently from this, they are prejudiced. they hate blacks. I used to be prejudiced against black people, too, despite intellectually knowing that I was unfair. so I trained myself off it. More and more times I saw the humanity, the goodness, and most importantly, the humour in the spirit and expression of the black people around me.
I believe racial prejudice is not learned, but born with the man. You can learn to get rid of your prejudice for a race, through long and hard self-convincing, but the need to hate remains with you, this is a need of humans.
so now I don't hate the black man, and I am not just saying it. I love to talk to random black guys in the mall, on the bus, whereever. they have a delightful sense of humour, which is light, a smidgen self-derogatory, but a kind sense and very funny, too. However, I learned to hate the chinese. I could strangle every chinese bloke with my bare hands, I hate them so much. they are vile little vermin. they all look alike, the chicks are sweet for five minutes, then they claw your eyes out in the next five, if you piss them off. chinese can gut you out in a matter of five minutes, they teach them how to do that in school, along with calligraphy, brush-handling and origami. I effing hate all the chines, and I actually consider the black people my brothers now.
I am neutral toward white folks, but never screwed anything outside my race. Unless you count that boa constrictor and that cute coala bear on the cruise ship, but they were both blonde, too. and the penguin sisters- they were twins, and they got to me by saying they were nuns of the Holy Heart of Madonna of Nuanciata order. I should have known... they had their armpits shaved, and the Nuanciata sisters are known to have sworn to stay unshorn. I know, I have had prevoius biblical lessons in knowledge by them in grade school. Oy.
------------
"When I read that in a mans' profile it is a total turnoff. It puts up a huge flag that says: I am intolerant of the music of a generation, I am intolerant"
I am going to say just this much more, and then I shut up and go away.
My father, a fat, middle-aged, white establishment male (lawyer) said of the beatles, when he first heard them, that the beatles' music is harsh, unbearably scraping and scratchy. this was in 1964.
I bet a lot of chinese don't like RAP, but they don't say it because they don't know it exists, by any name. | |

believe racial prejudice is not learned, but born with the man. Seriously ? ? ? ! Sadly comical if you are serious...or rather comically sad.
I bet a lot of chinese don't like RAP, but they don't say it because they don't know it exists, by any name. It is certainly POSSIBLE that a lot don't like rap music considering there are well over 1 BILLION Chinese. It is likely that a lot don't like most popular western musical genres. Having said that, there are millions of Chinese who do enjoy rap music. There are many Chinese rappers on the mainland, Taiwan and Chinese American. | |
