Take me for example Ive been playing video games that involved shooting people sinse i was near 10 and i have not been in a single fight that got physical in all of school. Yet i was bullied myself and had reason (not valid reason) but reason to be angry at people.
That doesn't mean that video games and movies don't help give kids and young adults ideas that thery've never had before, and that it's not possible that somebody (who could either be mentally ill or not) could be driven to hurt somebody in the same manner that they've seen on television (film or game).
Never underestimate the power of your subconcious.

| IS SOCEITY GOING TO POOP BECAUSE OF T.V ????? Posted: 11/7/2004 6:41:12 PM | hello, I'm a professional video game programmer. I really have to take issue with this.
> MY FRIEND WAS SHOWING ME A GAME WHERE YOU SMASH THE ENEMIES HEAD IN WITH A >METAL BAR..................BLOOD IS SPEWING EVERYWHERE/BRAINS EVERYTHING......IT IS >VERY GRAPHIC
The ESRB (That's "Entertainment Software Ratings Board", it's like the MPAA for movies) rates this kind of stuff "M". As in, (M)ature. As in, the watchdog industry that said industry created to police *itself* is saying "this stuff is not for little Johnny".
I'm not little Johnny. I'm 31 years old, and I like those sorts of games. Any game where I can punt a poodle into rush-hour traffic, well that's pure comedy. I should be allowed to make my own educated choices about the software I buy - it's my right as a free-thinking ADULT.
> A 12 YEAR OLD SITS THERE AND PLAYS THIS GAME FOR AN HOUR OR TWO
Software stores are usually required to "card" people purchasing software rated M. This means in order for a kid to get his hands on this stuff, an adult has to buy it for them. Now, you either have an adult who A) doesn't care if his son is playing Unreal Nun Nuker 2004, which is *not* the game industry's fault, or B) an idiot who doesn't stop to ask himself "hey, my son just asked me to buy him a copy of Unreal Nun Nuker 2004 - The Stripper-Beating Edition. Is this something I want him to be exposed to? Let me find out more about it before I plunk down my hard-earned $49.95 on his behalf.
If the parents don't care, and the stores don't enforce the ratings my industry put in place so that twelve-year-olds are *not* playing these games, that's not our responsibility.
On top of it, video games are not all about sex, drugs, and violins. Go to any EBX and what will you see? Shelf upon shelf of SPORTS GAMES, DRIVING SIMS, and VIRTUAL PETS. Pokemon and Dance Dance Revolution are some of the top-selling games of all time! But you don't see those on the nightly news because they're not easy enough to pin school shootings on.
Video games aren't the downfall of society. Oh, and Family Guy was cancelled. So what does that tell you?

The only time in a persons life that someone learns from what they physically see and persieve is around 3-6 years old. The time when the child is developing and has yet to learn moral and right from wrong behavior. At that time he would not even know what was happening.
Every person has the ability to make choices, Really the subconcious does not even contribute to a decision. You have to be concious to make a decision. Therefore that statement is incorrect.
Its always blamed on Sub Concious when in fact every single decision weather it to kill someone or do anything the person is concious of what there doing and the consequences of it. No video game or movie is going to compell a person to kill another human being.

Yea that was complicating. :/

Well I'm sorry but I don't agree with any of that.
I'd comment further but it wouldn't do any good. I'll just rule it a difference of opinion.

| IS SOCEITY GOING TO POOP BECAUSE OF T.V ????? Posted: 11/7/2004 10:04:04 PM | For the most part I see blaming tv and video games as just another way of not taking personal responsibility for your actions (or for raising your kids properly). This blame game seems like an increasing trend in north america. I remember seeing this women complain about how crude south park was and that it was a bad influence on here 6 year old kid. She was asked why is a 6 yr old watching tv at 11 pm. Her response was that her kid had a tv in his room so how could she stop him. I assume everyone sees the flaw in this answer.
Believe it or not I don't own a tv and haven't for a few years (hmm, so I waste my time here instead:).

I AM JUST TRING TO INTRODUCE THE CONCEPT THAT THESE THINGS IN THE MEDIA/GAMES MAYBE A LITTLE TOO MUCH FOR KIDS AND IN SOME WAY VERY HARD TO POLICE.........WHEN YOUR KID GOES TO HIS FRIENDS HOUSE
I AM JUST TRING TO MAKE PEOPLE THINK

| IS SOCEITY GOING TO POOP BECAUSE OF T.V ????? Posted: 11/8/2004 3:10:51 AM | actually, if you bothered to read the first line of my post, I stated that I *work* in the video game industry. You're smearing my *profession* when you spout garbage like that.
the safeguards are in place. we can't raise people's kids for them, and the insanely-violent games are only a small fraction of the market as a whole.
but since you didn't even bother to read my post fully, trying to change your opinion is a waste of *my* time...

| IS SOCEITY GOING TO POOP BECAUSE OF T.V ????? Posted: 11/8/2004 10:57:17 AM | Tv, as a gov't controlled information medium, has become the "norm" in North American society. They would much rather see you sitting on your butt at home rather than out protesting something or raising questions that they would rather not have you asking.
Video games are much the same...."do it at home, rather than in the streets"....
I do have to say that we, as parents, are the last and most comprehensive editor of what our children get to watch or get involved in within the "video world". This is why we have the "v-chip" built into televisions, and have ratings, and parental controls. How many of us who b*tch so much actually use these tools that are available to us? Sure, I know that it can be bypassed by going over to a buddies house...but even this can be somewhat thwarted by a simple phone call to buddies parents asking them to not allow "little Johnny" to be playing certain games, or seeing certain shows. Maybe it is time for him to come home when that show comes on, or when buddy wants to play that game.
I have to agree that we, as individuals, ARE responsible for our actions. Our environment and raising does have a lot to do with the way we turn out....but in todays "informed society" we can anylze ourselves to a certain point, and if we run into something we cannot handle, there is all kinds of self-help, and group help available, not to mention health and social services, psychiactric help, etc.
We have choices....even when we don't realize it, or the choices seem to be hmmm...less than optimal towards us. Example...hooker has a 500 dollar a day coke habit....but makes it to keep getting high. 500 a day??? HOLY CRAP! Wish I could MAKE that kind of money. She has options, even if she feels "trapped". She isn't...there is ALWAYS a way out.

As far as kids being exposed at their friends houses I agree its a problem. As YNA6 said it can be minimized in some cases by talking to other parents. It does get harder as they get older. I think the parents talking about it and giving a good foundation when they are young has a big impact on how kids react to media. My personal belief is that the first 5 years are the key. My parents provided last stop foster care (if they couldn't work out with us they went to a detention center). Every kid who came through had suffered trauma or significant neglect as a young child. I'm curious if exposure to media for kids under 5 has been studied at all. Anyone know? My perception is that some parents use the TV as a babysitter so it seems worth some attention.

| IS SOCEITY GOING TO POOP BECAUSE OF T.V ????? Posted: 11/9/2004 12:14:06 AM | Poor taste? Hey...everyone is different. Haven't seen any executions on prime time TV lately from prisons in the States. Want to bet what ratings they'd get IF they did televise them?
Dopey "reality" shows....total BS. They want a survivor game? Dump em in Iraq armed with a knife and see if they make it to a friendly border. Now THAT'S a survival game.
Eating wierd crap to win bucks? Some of the stuff they eat is part of the daily diet of people in some countries....big deal.
Trying for a "job"....LOL....totally nuts...as IF these people are gonna do this crap to "win a job". Says volumes about the state of the economy when we have to play a game show to "win a job" doesn't it??
Cartoons....most kiddie shows are going anime...and most suck. Thought Pokemon was a bit too much like cock-fighting or dog fighting...training animals to fight....for what reason?? I was taught to respect animals, not teach them to kill or hurt each other for my amusment.
Anyhow's...there is the odd show out there that is fun to watch. CSI for one....they do a darn good job of it.

| IS SOCEITY GOING TO POOP BECAUSE OF T.V ????? Posted: 11/9/2004 12:51:31 AM | I am so going to brand myself a geek for answering this.
> I was taught to respect animals, not teach them to kill or hurt each other for my amusment.
Pokemon combat is non-lethal and can be compared to sparring matches between martial artists. Pokemon enjoy the competition as it keeps them healthy and allows them to grow, both in life experience and evolution. Plus, any injury can be healed right up at the nearest Pokemon center.
In the first (and best, in my opinion) Pokemon movie "Mewtwo vs. Mew", numerous "evil", cloned Pokemon attacked Ash and co's own Pokemon. The kids expressed horror at the violence for violence's sake; Pikachu refused to fight back even when his evil clone was frustratedly slapping him across the face in order to provoke a response. Even Nurse Joy said sadly, "Pokemon were never meant to fight. Not like this."
Seriously. We have boxing, fencing, and other organized athletic competitions that glamourize ritual combat, and have for thousands of years. They're sports. It's just that the Pokemon League uses animals. The trainers do what they do because they love their Pokemon. They'd never force them to do anything they didn't want to do... so the creatures compete because they want to, not because they're trained or forced to.
On the other hand, TV as a whole... sucks rocks - and there's more commercials than ever before. That's why I just watch DVDs nowadays!

| IS SOCEITY GOING TO POOP BECAUSE OF T.V ????? Posted: 7/30/2005 3:42:14 PM | I think a lot of people have so little going on in their lives they live vicariously through TV. Then they spend a lot of time talking to others the next day about what they watched. I work second shift, and don't watch anything. So I have very little to talk to most of them about.
Seems like very few conversations these days start with "I did"; they start with "this celebrity did". Sometimes I wonder if people with lives are the minority these days; and the only way to spark anyone's interest in a subject is to be on TV when you do it.

I consider doing something - participating in activities that produce a long term result

| IS SOCEITY GOING TO POOP BECAUSE OF T.V ????? Posted: 7/30/2005 11:28:39 PM | I cut my cable 3 years ago, and have absolutely no regrets about this decision. I originally made this choice because of how stupid I thought reality TV is.
To paraphrase Karl Marx "Television is the opiate of the masses".
Even without TV at home, I get enough tv exposure to keep me from completely missing out on the pop culture exposure, and I still watch DVD's and stuff.
|
| IS SOCEITY GOING TO POOP BECAUSE OF T.V ????? Posted: 7/31/2005 8:26:57 AM | I got rid of my television (not by choice initially, lol) about four years ago. Do I miss it? Not one iota. Good riddance. Nothing but mindless drivel. Once the networks found that people just loved gossip more than they'd ever realized (as in , "let's watch Big Brother and see who took a crap last night! I wonder if it smelled bad and what did Jen think of it and......") I can honestly say that the days of television are now numbered. Sure, it's a long way to go but it's coming folks. Now you can CHOOSE what you want to be entertained with through the internet. Or, to be more precise, you aren't stuck having to choose from a limited list of fare. Now you make your own menu.
People love the crap on television today. Great. It's got to be the most mindless era in television's history but that tells you more about our culture than it does about television itself. With that in mind, if we're going to hell in a handbasket, it's not because of TV. It's just making money off of our inanity.

| IS SOCEITY GOING TO POOP BECAUSE OF T.V ????? Posted: 7/31/2005 9:08:07 AM | __Television was at it's best in the 60's & 70's. Today computers, video games, more outdoor activities, etc all take time away from our viewing time. I have cable but watch many 2 or 3 hours a week, if that. Don't get much value out of it.
