Favorite manufacturer of electric guitars?Page 2 of 3    (1, 2, 3)
A lot of what we like in a guitar is part of our comfort zone. Picking up a different guitar can be like hopping in a car we haven't driven before...a bit awkward until we've driven it a bit.

Sometimes at a sitting I'll play 3 or 4 different syles of guitars...then go a week or so just playing a Strat or my acoustic classical. When I play a variety of guitars I don't notice neck width, fret size, etc. However, if I've played one typ e of guitar for a few days then it's a bit of adjustment to get into the groove with another ax. Often it a guitar shop I hear someone saying they don't like the feel of a guitar...that's important...but just as often they haven't really given it a chance to get comfortable in their hands. If they playd that guitar exclusively for a week or so then they might find it 'natural'.

I'm quite partial to Ibanez and Schecter. I play eight strings tuned from B to to a high G string. Most of my equipment these days is entirely customized out though. Beforehand I was a big fan of PRS and Dean as well. Currently my flavor is my Schecter with an FR trem. Amazing versatility too for the build of guitar it is. :)

I play the same thing I've always played Gibson acoustics (mostly square shouldered J45s and 50s, and Gospels), and Les Paul Customs. Other then that, not real partial, I like real USA BC Riches, Schecters, ESPs (not LTDs), Kramers (again, US from back then, Epiphones (mostly US ones pre 1970) and a slew of other brands. To me, they're tools and Les Pauls happen to be the ones that always worked best, but I've used everything over the years. Hell, fora long time I used a Aria Pro II XR series made out of plywood for my stage guitar. I didn't care about it and it took a beating. For the most part though, I've always played Gibsons.

I know these days they have a billion boutique builders that build superior guitars but guess what? I don't care.

I'm not such a great musician myself, but if you watch Danny Gatton or Jeff Beck, is there ANYTHING that a Fender guitar can't do?

I have built two guitars this year. This caused me to sell 11.
I have never felt anything play this well before. Sold 2 Fenders, a Gretsch, an epiphone, 2 peaveys and on and on.
I have no need or desire for any guitar from any manufacturer again.

Not really. I can modify my Strats in a half hour...new neck...loaded pick guard, bridge or whetever. I like my Gibson, Ibanez and metal guitars but they just don't have the versatility of a Fender.

However, i was recently at a local guitar shop and played a Squire through a the latest Roland special effects pedal and ...WOW....spooky. I have other muti effects pedals but this one makes any plugged in guitar sound like just about anything...classical guitar to grand piano to violin.

I used to like Ibanez, had an RG470 I think the name was (well, RG something)

Now I have a Fernandes Revolver Pro (took out the sustainer kit and replaced with Dimebuckers)

The Fernandes really plays well

Mines a 60th Anniversary Mexican Strat (in my pic). I've had a Les Paul Standard and a couple of Ibanez's but my Strat is the most comfortable and playable instrument I've had. I love it and wouldn't swap for anything.

nobby....I'ver played electric guitar for over 40 years. Whenever someone asks what I recommend they get...it's a Fender Mexican Strat....best quality guitar on the market for the dollar. Better still, look for a used one locally in good condition for around $250.

I totally agree with that sciencetreker. Although I paid £300 for mine (used, mint condition) it was worth every single penny. People talk about the US Strat being the best but is it really worth paying hundreds more for very little extra in terms of sound and quality? I don't think so. The Mexican wins hands down for me.

Agreed...worth it in the UK.

I bought my first two Fenders, a Stratocaster and a Jaguar, in Europe. However , when I moved to N. America I felt I was in a candy store...prices way lower (maybe it's different these days).

Today I scan Kjiji (like USA Craigslist) and bottom feed. I Get a Fender about every 3 or 4 months...either a different colour Stratocaster or a lesser known Fender model I don't have. No real risk buying a Fender used as you can usually resell it for at least what you paid for it and nothing broken you can't easily replace. In another couple weeks a ton of guitars will hit the local used market as students sell them off to get money to return to school.

I used to buy a used Gibson now and then but no longer. Too many fakes on the market. The fakes have gotten so good that I couldn't tell anymore.

Re: Msg 39 - Come on man, that's weak !!!
Leo Fender did not invent a "style", he invented a musical instrument so good and original that a style was born.
Fender MADE the Strat, and everybody else copied it, and copied it, and copied it.
He also made amps, and while he didn't invent the guitar amp, again he made some of the most successful and beloved products. Gibson also made amps, but they just didn't have the mojo.
Don't believe me? Try and buy a decent vintage one. Fender guitars and amps from the fifties STILL sound and play fantastic.

Fretboards on electrics don't matter much to me...perhaps because I play a wide variety of guitars. It's like driving a different car...can't really tell after a couple of minutes playing

I have ebony fretboards on my Gibson Custom and on the BC Rich Bich...never think about it. I like the look of a Fender maple neck ...especially on my surf green and daphne blue stratocasters but not any difference in actual playing that I've noticed compared to rosewood.
It's music..art...whatever works for you.

Reminds me...time to go on line and bottom feed...lots of good guitars, amps, pedals, etc. coming up for sale.

That's what I meant. Are you not familiar with English terminology?? For example, when someone says that Betty Page originated the retro/goth-type bangs/haircut we see nowadays on a lot of young women, that means she was the first to come up with that style, she "originated that style", just like Leo Fender was the first to come up with the shape & style that comprises the Strat. Many guitar makers have copied that look since. Same thing.

Wow, take a valium & get some anger therapy. And FYI, some of the original Strat body form came from suggestions to Leo by Eldon Shamblin, the guitar player for the Texas Playboys. Leo gave him prototypes to try out in gig settings, & then Eldon would report back to Leo what he felt worked & what didn't, like the length of the horns for instance. Glad I could educate you, & also give you some helpful & obviously much-needed advice. Good luck with your anger problem.

Re: msg 42 - OK, I didn't mean to be insensitive. Yeah, Leo cloned himself, more than once.
Maybe Levi Strauss didn't invent blue denim, and maybe Harley-Davidson didn't invent the V-twin engine, and maybe Coca-Cola didn't invent the soft drink, but those became icons for their respective industries. As did Fender.
Antonio Stradivari made guitars too, although he is better known for his violins. Did you know that?

Re Fender's Stratocaster.

Fender lost the right to protect the style because of their own success. A court ruled that the style had become synonomous with the image of an elecrtric guitar and thus the style could not be protected....thus the universal copying of the Stratocaster by dozens of guitar manufacturers. I knew a guy with a collection of non-Fender strat style guitars and he had over 60 different makes....most picked up for a $100 or so. Guitars aren't rocket science. With today's digital machine tooling a Chinese manufacturer can pop out excellent quality instrument if that is there goal. A $150 Fender Squire is much better quality than my first 1971 Fender Stratocaster. It's a bit like cars. We used to have tio fix or adjust something evertime we played...today not much ever has to be done besides an initial set up.

Re a comment above on a Gibson custom. I have a Silverburst and it plays great. However, it is what it is. Too fragile for my liking. In 40 years I've seen enough of them with snapped head stocks. In contrast the joke was you can take a Fender Telecaster and use it to prop up the side of your car to change a flat.

My all time favorite is my Les Paul. To all the haters and know-it-alls...it is a studio lite, the one with the composite slice in the middle. Did very little to lighten the guitar. People laugh about it. Until they hear it played......walk right on stage with Marshal head and Peavy bass cabinet....holy crap...pure Metal Heaven. Bought it used, I was shopping for a Custom or a nice studio with at least ebony fretboard... Over a period of about 6 months, I must have played at least 30, close to making a decision, a guy pulls this out from the stock room, best kept secret in the world as he called it. I played it, I switched to the loudest amp they had...it was quiet, nice...I bought it. Not sure why, but all who play it want it. Mostly LP players, you know...dedicated bunch.

I have or have had:
ESP....nice, pretty deep red finish, ok sound, played ok...boring.
Guild Strat body...white...rewired to include in and out of phase...nice, heavy, boring....sold it.
Just bought the new Ibanez RG...loved the feel, loved the Trem....fun to play, great sound from a reasonably priced toy.
Gun metal 7 string Ibanez with a sort of Gibson SG body...silly toy I picked up used, plays ok...bored with it. Besides, Limp Bizkit is asleep right now...
Not to mention the accoustics:
Washburn, Gibson, Ibanez, Martin, Takamine, Ovation...

When I grow up (like when I'm 80) I will get myself a very fat sounding, blues busting, Stevie Ray Vaughan sounding...strat.

singlwwhitevampire.

You mention acoustics. With them I'm way fussier. I find it's ALL about the individual guitar. could be a $100 no-name or a Martin. It sounds right or it doesn't. I can go to the guitar store and play 5 acoustics of the same model and they are are all individuals. I don't even know what I like in an acoustic until I hear it.

owned a bunch of brands over the years but alway come back to Gibson and Fender, gues that what I learned to play one and any deviation never feels right. Some types just don't work for my style, Ibanez,Kramer for example. However what they have been doing the last few years as well as martin and guild seems to delute their quality. So I tend to buy vintage or used but even then you have to picka bunch to find the good. For example I have 76 firebird that is better than my 91 and it sounds as close to abuddies 63 as any 2 guitars can be. On the other hand played a bunch of nationals from the 20's n 30's, wound up with a 2008 national tricone. So each one has to be judged on its own not common wisdom or hype and what works for you may not work for me.
