| | he wanted to pay me to marry himPage 2 of 4 (1, 2, 3, 4) | Absolutely would not do it. Maybe its different in the OPs country, but in the USA, a sham marriage to help someone obtain US residency is a felony and immigration takes it seriously. They will call you down, they will quiz you separately about your life and if you fail to answer the questions to their satisfaction, it is quite likely that you be brought up on some very serious charges. Jail time is a strong possibility.
I would not risk having a criminal record and possible incarceration for money, even if it seems like alot. There are alot of illegal things one can do to get money and so far I haven't done any of those things and I don't plan to.

| he wanted to pay me to marry him Posted: 6/3/2012 10:57:03 AM | Getting married for the sole purpose of helping someone gain U.S. immigration status is illegal and punishable by 5 years in jail and a $250,000 fine.
For the immigrant, deportation that is basically lifetime banishment. If immigration finds that one has attempted or actually entered into a marriage to evade the immigration laws, section 204 (c) of the Immigration and Nationality Act says that no other petition may ever be approved. Even if they find some other way to qualify, they will not be able to get a green card. Ever.
I don't know what the laws in Australia say, but U.S. laws are pretty darn harsh.

| he wanted to pay me to marry him Posted: 6/3/2012 11:09:14 AM | For all of you saying that you'd do it, but live separate lives... it doesn't work that way. Haha. To obtain a green card you have to go through a shit ton of legal stuff, even if that is technically the "fast way" to get it.
I'd be lying if I said that I didn't think about it. It's an interesting concept, especially with the economy the way that it is. But I doubt I'd ever do it.

You can as long as you are not caught. So its super dangerous to do it that way obviously... and why I said we would have to spend time together to make sure we know each other well enough to pass questions like what color is their tooth brush. I know people who do this.
I am curious if they really do need you to live together.. loads of married people dont live together for various reasons. Would they really not accept that in this situation assuming the reasons were legit?

| he wanted to pay me to marry him Posted: 6/3/2012 1:19:51 PM | Step one: apply a price tag to your sense of personal integrity. Once that price is paid, you have no integrity left.
Step two: subject yourself to the laws of TWO countries. Hope you've studied them both thoroughly.
Step three: Save 100% of the money for legal defense fees, should you either get caught, or discover after the fact that you failed to complete step 2.
Step four: accept that you have to live with this behavior as a permanent part of your life for it's duration.
My own step one: say no, and stop talking to the person.

| he wanted to pay me to marry him Posted: 6/3/2012 1:59:00 PM | | Was 'propositioned' along the same lines when I was at Uni. I was shocked. The money would've been great but the deception of family and friends, plus that being my first 'marriage' would have been far too stressful. Plus, what if the guy changed his mind and wanted to stay married. A big fat NO!!! | |

|
| he wanted to pay me to marry him Posted: 6/3/2012 4:23:10 PM | | Nah, I wouldn't do that because if and when I get married I want it to be to a person I love, not a fake sham. Even if I did the fake sham and got married for a second time to the person I love, it wouldn't be the same. | |

| he wanted to pay me to marry him Posted: 6/3/2012 9:38:27 PM | How is she to know if he has a criminal record, is mentally unstable or wouldnt be forcing himself on her. It is illegal anyway to consider it and a hefty gaol sentence for both. It is not so easy to fool Immigration by the way at least if the woman is marrying a man in that situation. They would wonder why.
It would have to be a hell of a lot of money, at least $50,000 and being bankrupt, for me to even consider compromising my ethics in this way. I had an offer from a gay friend of mine who thought he was straight acting, he was not!! No expert investigator would have been fooled for a minute lol! Another friend did it for a Chinese woman who immigrated to Australia and married him, to pay his debts and she ended up falling for him and gave him a bad time when he wanted to see other women. SO many pitfalls.
|
| he wanted to pay me to marry him Posted: 6/4/2012 6:11:00 AM | I would do it.
Honestly marriage doesn't mean anything to me, and I don't like to like the person to do it. My price would be higher than 10K, though.

I just had to say that this was contradictory!~ lol

| he wanted to pay me to marry him Posted: 6/6/2012 11:49:20 PM | | Do it! I reckon it would be fun! Ask him to holiday over for a month or so first incase he turns out a mental case. If it turns out awsome, why not? Have pre-nup incase he takes your house in 2 years though etc. | |

| he wanted to pay me to marry him Posted: 6/7/2012 5:23:30 PM | Do it! I reckon it would be fun! It's fraud and you can get in a lot of trouble if you marry someone so they can get residency in your country. I would never do anything that would potentially cause me problems with the law--nothing more serious than a parking violation or speeding ticket anyway.
Perpetrating a fraud like a sham marriage is very, very stupid. Fun? That's idiotic.

| he wanted to pay me to marry him Posted: 6/7/2012 5:38:41 PM | I have been asked by someone to marry them for a favor and I decided though I love helping people it had its limits. (it was ironica; they acted like they were doing me a favor "letting" me help them by marrying them... I polititely declined, all six times they asked..
And I know a few people who have those two year things where after the second year; the person got the person thrown out of their own house, barred and they moved their Russian (in one case) and other european (in the other two) actual boyfriends into the person's own house and they were forced to divorce with them losing all their possessions.
The two years is a statute that is very important legally from what I was told by the people who were burned by it.
No matter how nice someone seems? Legally tying yourself to them without knowing them REALLY well?
You coudl be in for a scary rude awakening. And even if they are as nice as they purport themselves to be? Do you really want your life on hold for two years, even for a lot of money?
But I am thinking you already know this...

Everyone has a Russian wife or an Irish husband here. It's the latest trend.

I have not been able to find the penalty in Australia for being involved in a sham marriage in order to get residency, but I did find the penalty for 'assisting' in one. So, if the penality for just assisting is this serious, the penalty for being involved in one would most likely be more severe.
What are the penalties for assisting in a sham marriage for migration purposes?
Depending upon a person’s involvement, penalties can range from two years imprisonment to ten years imprisonment with fines up to $100,000. http://www.civilcelebrants.com.au/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=9

he asked me if i would marry him for a rather large amount of cash, no sex just live together for two years. he was good looking and funny and i did think about it for a while.
Give me his number and I'll do the thinking and negotiating for you for 20% of course.
I AM assuming we are talking at least 500 grand tax free.
|
| he wanted to pay me to marry him Posted: 6/9/2012 3:48:57 PM | | That's incredibly illegal. Immigration questions the parties about intimate living habits to make sure they are actually living tgether, no problem there, but I wouldn't do it because I would be afraid of getting caught. You never know if it's a ring that is already under investigation or will get busted up by the feds. I would be too scared to do it. | |
|
| he wanted to pay me to marry him Posted: 6/10/2012 7:43:31 PM | lol; you can't make this stuff up.
cracks me up that people blame marriage instead of the dysfunctional people and situations that are marrying.
no dont marry him. and if there is no sex why does it matter what he looks like? of course there will be sex and that's called prostitution.
I would never do it in a million years.
