actually would never ask for a metered cab just because you can be taken on a trip around the world.
The thing I have found to work is to just ask how much it would cost to go to a certian place. If they say 100 rupees for example, I say 20.
If they don't agree (because they probally wont) then you just find another taxi. If it's really not working, then just increase little by little until you find someone who agrees.
That way they can't take you for a ride around the world and you probally won't get ripped off all that badly.

So therefore if you come across a place you really enjoy stay a little longer and get to know the place and it's people.

It takes almost 2 days to travel, depending on where you're going (each way), plus another day to recover, if you're not an experienced traveler.
I also think the biggest mistake one can make, is trying to cram in too much traveling in one trip (I've done this once, but luckily got the opportunity to do it right the second time, as I got another opportunity).
You may never get that particular chance to do so again considering travel costs, and as such should treat every trip to any specific destination as potentially your last one there. I.E Take your time to let everything sink in, and don't be afraid to try new things such as local delicacies, and overall just immersing yourself into the culture in full.

I would agree with this, though I did spend only two weeks in Australia. I think it was a decent amount of time, though three would have definitely allowed me to branch out from the city a bit more.
My uncle, however, would disagree with us. "I'm off to Rio. I'll be back in two days." Oh yes, two days. NY to Brazil. What the...?? Then again, he does travel there frequently so I guess he's seen all there is to see. Probably has some secret life going on down there. I don't ask questions.
Anyway, my best advice is pretty common sense, but I wish I'd followed it sooner - Try to prepare yourself for culture shock ahead of time. Read whatever materials you can get your hands on and know what you're walking into. Expect the unexpected. Ask a lot of questions. Chat with locals ahead of time. Remember comfort is a luxury. Be ready for anything. Forget the concept of a "New York Minute." You are not in Kansas anymore. Know before you go.
I've had my share of "wtf" moments during various trips. My own fault. I just did not expect to: - Sleep in a house that had been converted into a local neighborhood bar with no front door. - Shower in an open bathroom with no door or shower curtain in a house that had been converted into a local neighborhood bar with no front door. - Find myself in a place where cabbies drink and drive. At the same time. - Find myself in a cab with a cabbie swigging his beer while taking sharp turns around steep cliffs with little brake action. - See giant iguanas strolling down the side of a busy highway. - Hear "I'll be there between...Tuesday and Saturday" from a locksmith who didn't show up until Sunday.

Especially so in tropical countries, as their off seasons, still provide you with great weather. (The purchase prices are rock bottom, but you can buy tickets for as late as May or even later, at these discounted rates). All the more reason to plan ahead.
Put it this way. It'll shave almost a grand off of a flight to New Zealand in regular travel time.
I typically travel overseas in January/February, as it's an escape from the cold, and is often a time where airlines liquidate their tickets at times as low as 50% off.
I also always book my departure and arrival date on a weekday. Airlines will crank up their rates for a Saturday or Sunday departure/arrival.
With flights often being the bulk of your costs, trimming it down to half, means you have a lot more money to spend at your destination (there's method to my madness).
