The aid that the UK gives to India, Pakistan and Afghanistan has nothing to do with lifting their people out of poverty, it is solely a political relationship. In that part of the world politics has a very different meaning.

Almost a quarter of the world's population lives there, most, in abject poverty, we can't begin to imagine.
I'm not familiar with all of the reasons for an aversion to female offspring, but I think, as ever, the problems stem from age old customs and traditions, and religious practices, which people here, and there, are reluctant to change.

So they'd rather commit infanticide, than change the stupid tradition of 'dowries'.
Just another example of the hateful influences of religion and old tradition, as far as I'm concerned.
Just more deluded people, demanding "respect" for their BS.

I'm confused, because in other posts you have said that religious customs should be "celebrated" and yet here you are basically calling a whole religion bullshit.

Usually you are one of the first people to jump on here and call me a bigot for speaking out against religious customs.

Are you no longer a liberal now then?

How can foreign aid go to British people ?LOL..It's foreign aid..It's helping children to be immunised, helping old people,It's helping to educate women. It's good that this aid is provided.

If it was so good then why was it refused by the Indian government? As has already been alluded to, the aid money in question was more to do with greasing palms than an attempt at helping those less fortunate. In the hands of corrupt governments, there is no guarantee that foreign aid money reaches those most in need. I think in order to instill confidence in the public that the money is reaching its desired source that governments should be more transparent about how aid is delivered and evidence its successes and failures.

I once read that more than a million babies were aborted in the UK in something like ten years,a lot of Indian people would be shocked by that. What is culturally accepted in some countries is seen as sickening in others .

Why on earth would Indian people be shocked by that? Every 12 seconds, a baby girl is aborted in India. That's about 7,000 girls killed every day just because they are females. They seem to be forgetting one important thing….that men can’t multiply without women. It’s only a question of time before they start killing off the elderly and calling it mercy killings.

I have spent a lot of time in India - and giving money to the Indian government is a false economy!
It will never ever reach the people!
As for re education - how can any amount of money change the views of hundreds of thousands of religious /superstitious people that are brought up in poverty that some of us cant even imagine?
Charitable agencies that fight the customs and practices of certain religions are frowned upon in India - especially if they are run by a western influence!
I think unless you are going to see it with your own eyes then reading an article in a newspaper doesnt give you any clue on what goes on within certain communities in India.
