Posted: 7/19/2012 1:06:23 PM | I'm certain that someone displaying a skull and crossbones flag on their pleasure boat isn't necessarily advertising that they are actually pirates! :)
The flag, as a symbol or graphic can be assigned any meaning, by anyone. Sometimes people display symbols simply because they enjoy the graphic...they aren't making a statement or attempting to rouse your ire.
Speaking of ire...
Your username...look up the meaning of hooligan and hooliganism. I could be irritated that you are denegrating my Irish ancestry, but you may attach a completely different meaning to the word! SEE?!
Here's the deal. At the end of the day, unless something is directed to be offensive or hurtful specifically to YOU, don't worry about it....or simply ASK the person what that symbol means to THEM. You may be surprised at their answer.

What "state rights" were being threatened...? A few posters have stated that but NOT ONE has been able to say which specific "state right" was being infringed...
If it wasn't a "state right to determine slavery as they saw fit" then WHAT was the "state right" they were so upset about...?

there is a long and complicated list of state rights that were argued, starting in the constitutional crisis of 1832
slavery was a minor issue, not getting rid of it, but limiting it to states that already had it, taxes, governors rights,the vote ,military,immigration,federal government powers, all were major issues....
just like the 'jews' of europe really was not any ones concern,( no one wanted to help them, or take them in, see the evian conference, on the problem of european jews),till after ww2,slavery was only a major issue, at the end of the civil war | |

Everybody knew that Lincoln was anti-slavery. He did his best to waffle on it and distance himself from it during the election, but that was the big issue. It was pretty much the issue the Republican party was founded on. When Lincoln won, the southern states seceded. I'd suggest you take your own advice and read a book. Just one that is actual history. Doris Goodwin Kearns' book on the Lincoln administration is a good one. | |

Travel around the country and see how many people make an effort to be just like others in their group. I could ask a similar question, 'What does the Confederate flag have to do with WA/OR?' Really, not much....but since so many of the rural folks seem to want to be just like the 'Bubbas' from the south it is only fitting to adopt their flag too. Seriously, people in the NW make an effort to be like southerners, I think much of it has to do with influences from country music and impressing the women that dig that music. | |

Posted: 7/21/2012 1:37:16 AM | At some point the battle flag became known as the "Rebel Flag", and became a symbol of rebellion. Some in the south see it as part of their identity as when they grew up, it was displayed all over. To the people alive today, the meaning is different.
It is interesting how symbols tend to change meaning, but some will not give in and allow the change. The design Hitler stole to create the Swastika for centuries was a symbol of good luck and prosperity. Hitler destroyed that symbol. It seems like once a symbol is made bad, it is almost impossible to turn it around. | |

I am very liberal
I still like the confederate flag
just the look of it, no I have no use for it at all, I am canadian, and it has no cultural meaning for me
but it does to many in the south
now I love the south, people black and white are very friendly
some great nature down there,also love the food, and how the history is cherished!!!
I honestly do not think it is any more racist than the north, or even canada!
thats right american friends, this country is just as racist (or not)as yours
talk to any black person, who is brutalized by the Toronto cops, and you ll find out, they are as bad as the LAPD ever was | |

Actually the flag is a symbol of states rights. That's why its embraced as a symbol by so many people who oppose the centralization of power in the federal government. But since when do liberals let things like facts and actual history get in the way of one of their self righteous guilt trips. | |

If you name your car (doesn't even have to be named after a civil war general)...same thing. If you paint the name of your car on the car, (or even your own name on the door of the car}, then the flag is yours. If you've ever fastened tires to the front bumper to help you plow your way through a barnyard while fleeing the scene of a petty crime then you can for sure proudly fly your flag no matter how far north of the Mason Dixie you are. | |
