| | question / situationPage 2 of 2 (1, 2) | Does cow tipping count?
I'm a good tipper but twice I've left nothing.........the service was not only horrible but the waitress was rude as well.
Ironically, the second time I didn't, the next day I saw a fridge magnet that said, "God knows when you don't tip!".............. :0 Made me wonder if I should go to confession but.................I'm not Catholic.

| question / situation Posted: 7/18/2012 10:03:11 AM | thank god live in the uk, tipping culture not here ( get paid do a job no one tips most workers)
I really struggled when I first moved to Canada to understand tipping etiquette because it is so different in the UK. Back home, you would tip in a restaurant but there was no set guidelines on amount although I think most people used to tip between 10-15% (Been a long time so my memory might be wrong there). The finer dining establishments would include a 15% service charge in the bill which was clearly stated but if you felt that you had received poor service, then you were perfectly entitled to deduct that amount. The only other place I can recall that tips were expected is in the hairdresser. Oh, a the cab driver who got you home safe after you'd been out for a few bevvies.
In the days when the milk man delivered to the door and the binmen (garbage collectors) came alongside your house and physically took your full black sack out of the can and left a new one behind, my parents tipped those too but it was an annual event and refer to as a Christmas Bonus.
In Canada, it seems anyone in the service industry is tipped ! I could understand the restaurant situation as that wasn't unfamiliar but, it still blows my mind, that I can order a coffee in a popular drive through, circle the building to collect it and the expectation is the person standing at the window gets tipped !!! I mean, why ? She poured a cup of coffee from the coffee pot beside her, slapped a lid on it and passed it through the window. And yes, maybe it is the British view but part of the reason I don't understand this particular situation for tipped, is she gets paid to do that and it's hardly remarkable service ! Of course I do tip because it's part of the culture to do so but that particular instance just makes no sense to me.

As a Torontonian I was far less generous. Yes, 15% for waiters, cabbies, hair dressers and movers -- even when the service sucks -- but never at McD's or Tim Horton's. :)

| question / situation Posted: 7/19/2012 7:20:39 AM | Now a days EVERYONE expects to be tipped, I refuse in my line of work, do not think it is right or expected. And I & my fellow technicians are the point ment for company customer feed back. Cabbies, barristas, like that I usually over pay with bills & "keep the change" kind of thing, if it is $.99, or $.01... sorry change your prices from $1.99 to $2.01 LMAO & get your tips increased ;). Different story when it comes to resturants though, those tips get split between the waitress, cook,, & bus person.... they have to act as a team, if my table is dirty when I am seated, waitress is slow, cold food, wrong order brought to my table, no condiments, ect... sorry tip is dimenished or not left at all. I will tell them why as well. Both of my sons were servers/waiters from Olive Garden to posh resturants serving $600 bottles of wine, better know how to uncork that bottle w/o having cork residue inside or you tip is shot down in ashes....you not only get what you pay for as the saying goes, but you also get what you earn.... learn & ply your trade with a courteous professsional manner, take cae of the customer, & good things will come to you... esp. in the form of tips...if your the point person like a server/waiter/waitress... You have to make sure the cust. is well taken care of, after you get the largest percentage of the tips.... | |

| question / situation Posted: 7/19/2012 7:35:27 AM | | Forgot to add... Landra you live in So. Calif., & do not tip the shuttle bus driver...TSK TSK TSK.... LOL I was all but raised in So. Calif...tiping was reserved for the waiter/waitress at a sit down resturant as a kid growing up.... some where it changed & EVERYONE is now expected to tip EVERYONE FOR EVERYTHING, or the establishment put the biggest jar they can find on the counter by the cash register & tape a bill board sight to it "TIPS" . | |

| question / situation Posted: 7/19/2012 7:57:16 AM | I'm not really sure what the scenario is, that you're questioning. Its not very clearly written.
The OP does come across as being uptight and resentful, though.
Never mind the tipping business, I think you should communicate about those feelings. I'd guess the tipping scenario has just brought those feelings to the surface and its not really about the tip. Its about someone thinking someone else is a mean person. That can be quite important in a relationship and I'll have a second guess, its that which is making it difficult to talk about.

Forgot to add... Landra you live in So. Calif., & do not tip the shuttle bus driver...TSK TSK TSK.. I live here now where I grew up and spent most of my adult years tipping was not part of the culture. So tipping all these other people- like a shuttle bus driver- just doesn't occur to me. That's why if anyone with wants to tip, do.

| question / situation Posted: 7/19/2012 8:11:32 PM | Tips are shared. Good service bad food, good food bad service, clean or dirty dishes, dirty restroom, make your complaints specific and tip with the understanding that one hard worker may be among the lazy.
I speak up.and praise and complain. I no longer go to eat with a best friend because he would not let me complain and wanted to leave good tips. I work hard for my money, why should I share it with someone who doesn't?
My daughter used to have fits when I complained. Then she worked as a waitress and cook and even cleaning restaurants. At 17, she is now the first to complain, though she does it tactfully.
They say you can tell the true character of a man when you see how he treats his mother, a stranger in need, and a waitress.
If you can't communicate this as something important to you, you have two choices, continue to experience conflict in tip situations, or stop getting in those situations in the first place. You cannot change someone by going to forums to prove more people thi k you are right. You can only change how you react to that person's behavior.

| question / situation Posted: 7/20/2012 5:27:50 AM | Again, thanks to all that have responded. I am wondering if a tip situation is one of many potential transactions and situations that occur while two people are around each other. Some are initiated obviously, i.e. going to a restaurant. Some are not, i.e. a telemarketer phones, a homeless person asks for money, a phone call comes in on one persons cell, someone at the mall wants a few minutes of your time for a survey, etc. Then there are endless possibilities even just in a restaurant. The food might not be right, i.e. not cooked right or not what was ordered, the waiter might seem surly, they may be out of the special, do they charge for refills, do they come around at a reasonable pace with coffee refills, etc.
I like your comment about the character, how one is treating the individuals as you mention.
thanks again for all responses...

| question / situation Posted: 7/20/2012 6:10:44 PM | If they have to sell it by telemarketing its not worth buying. Bye. I hang up on telemarketers.
A college student was researching homelessness and found he could make more by panhandling (untraceable thus no income tax) by panhandling than he could in his chosen field, so he went full time panhandling and dropped out of school... then retired. I ignore panhandlers. Note that "Mr Golden Voice" Williams , who was found panhandling after losing his job for being a drunk went back on the booze shortly after he was given a new job. He quit rehab (paid for by others) twice since then... Its not looking very promising for real rehabilitation. (drug/alcohol rehab very rarely works)
Reality gets in the way of "feel good" propaganda.
