Clip in extensions on middle aged women?Page 2 of 4    (1, 2, 3, 4)
I'm just under 45, and my hair is shoulder length - but I use the same type of hair extensions myself depending on what's going on. These days extensions aren't something you have to hide like you did in the past - most people I'm close to know I do it to add volume, length, etc on certain days. The bf knows I do, and could care less. I take em right out before we head to bed - then again he thinks I am attractive first thing in the morning - which of course isn't the case, so he's obviously able to deal with me at my worst.

I say if you want to use them, go right ahead...I don't think most people will care - and they shouldn't.

I luv the ease of the extensions- they clip in -in 5 mins, I can style them while off my head in a fraction of the time it takes to curl my real hair...i actually just ordered a 2nd set & bought different curling irons, etc

You are very beautiful, and if you enjoy wearing extensions so by all means wear them.

yes..no ageism here..for any reason..cosmetics..hair extensions..our choice..our right..? omg..we're lovin it..I wouldn't want the clip ons personally..but I can see the versatility in it..some ppl use their own hair ..whatever..age is not a factor..discrimination is..since when is age a needed motive to modify fashion, make up and wardrobe? It isn't..we are very versatile..at any age..and in this I mean we are rich in diversity..and that what makes hair extensions sing the words..no limits..to each his/her own

I notice a lot of American women wear their hair long when they are middle aged and I dont think it is a good look, trying to stay young. A shorter hair style can make you look younger actually but you can always put it in a chignon and it will look elegant, if it is long. But over the shoulders and straggly, bleached blonde, ugghh.
If you are tall and slim you may get away with it.

The only hair extension I might consider trying is the clip-in bangs. I'd like the look of bangs every now and then---but I don't want to cut them because I'd probably get tired of them eventually, and they'd take forever to grow back out again.

If your hair is naturally fine or thin and you want some volume and a little length on special occasions..get them looked at and trimmed to fit your style.
Don't use more than 2 unless taught how.

They are fun to play with but then so are wigs..red one day, brunette the next.Long straight to wavy and short ect.

Not something I would do on a daily basis to look like a "desperate house wife"with lush long locks.
The stylist make them look that way.

A good wig these days that looks real and cost about the same as a good cut/highlight.

What makes some look silly is determined by how its done and on the person..

Long hair never flattered me no matter how much men like to touch it.
I have always looked better with it to my shoulders, maybe a bit more or less.

Age? naw nothing to do with it.

I always looked worn out and haggard with really long hair..

Kayla and hal have exceptional hair and should keep it until they die..JMO of course.

If its silky, shiny and has a bit of bounce/flair..you have the right length.

I personally play with my hair and like to touch it so extensions other than a couple of nights to just look different dont fit my life style

MY OPINION..You look best with shoulder length..and more on the red than blonde side.It flatters your face so much better than the longer lighter look.

That has nothing to do with your age.

Also long straight hair can make the hips look wide so look at the overall picture.

Bottom line isplease yourself and have fun.

I'm 103 and I have no intentions of cutting my hair short and getting a "mom" hairdo. I think it's great you got extensions - good for you! :-)

Well, you know about my wigs, OP, so obviously, my opinion is do whatever the hell makes you happy.

I never had hair past chin length after I was a teenager, because it was always thin, fine, and frizzy, and that's before it started falling out.

After some initial unhappiness when I had significant hair loss starting about a year ago, I discovered wigs and quickly fell in love with them. I had my own hair cut short and stopped coloring it, and am spending the money I'm saving on wigs. The wigs rock. No matter what I'm doing or how hot and humid it is, my hair is always perfect.

Interestingly, my boyfriend likes me best with a short, asymmetrical wig, so I accommodate that when we're together, but I do love my long wigs, occasionally, because I never had long, gorgeous hair like that.

Most of all, I love the how low maintenance they are. Synthetic wigs don't require styling and go right back to their original shape after washing. It's just so great always to have perfect hair. And I really love the variety. I have all kinds of different styles, lengths, and colors.

Sometimes when I'm hiking or exercising I wear my own hair, and that's ok, too, now that I'm not limited to it. The wigs have hugely increased my quality of life, and I can't say enough about how much I love them.

Umakeitentertaining: But I keep it shoulder length or a little longer, as I feel it looks more professional.

When I was in administration I kept my hair about your length. I think a lot of people have that misconception that shorter = more professional. When I want to look "professional" now with long hair.....all I do is part it off centered....pull it back in a low pony tail (make sure it's behind the ears) and secure it with a tight fitting clip. Finish it off by using some molding paste or gel on the sides. Then of course how you dress and do your make-up all comes into play with that "professional" look your going for. So another words, you can still look very professional without sacrificing your long hair IF that's what you want.

Umakeitentertaining: And I notice that hair styles seem to be what we had in the 70's. Long and straight. Forget that. I'm not a teenager, I'm a woman.

I'm pretty sure there are a lot of women with long, straight hair that look fantastic that are also all "woman"...and not a teenager. Sounds like your saying that "long, straight" hair is for teenagers only. That's just silly.

No kidding. Geeez

PeppermintPetunias: Also long straight hair can make the hips look wide so look at the overall picture.

This is actually not true. Short hair can actually make the hips look wider.

OP.....I think you look great with the longer extensions. I think the only "rule" to follow is whether it looks good on the person or not and obviously it looks good on you so I say go for it. You also look good with med length hair. Your one of those people who can wear either length and it looks good. I'm like that also. I've had my hair all different lengths and styles throughout the years (except super.....super....short) and I think shorter hair as well as longer hair looks good on me. So your one of the lucky ones......you have choices.

Regardless of the length, if the hair is thin and lies close to the head, it can make the hips look wider. I think big-hipped women need a fuller hairstyle to balance out their hips---which is harder to achieve on fine, thin hair if it is too long.

In this guy's opinion, if a woman's hips are too big, it doesn't matter what she does to her hair. The hips will still look big.

Blondie you are as cute as a button and I think any cut or style would look great on you.

As for myself I never looked good with longer hair, don't have the face for it. I prefer to keep my locks shorter which I think suits my face and my personality. I do enjoy experimenting with different colours though....I even went blonde for a very short time. Not me either...lol
So go ahead and have fun playing with your hair, we only live once :)

So big-hipped women need big hair to balance out their hips? lol I don't know about that?

I do agree with Paderic though, if someone is "hippy" NO hairstyle is going to make the hips look small; HOWEVER...Between shorter/medium length hair (like the OP's hair before extensions) and longer hair (like the OP's hair with extensions) the longer hair would be the least likely to make the hips look wider as someone said earlier.

ETA: I think I'm going to check out the "Foxy Locks"......I'm thinking of a medium brown to low-light the blonde just for the fun of it!

Yes, the fullness draws the eye upwards towards the face. Do you remember the big shoulder pads on women's clothing from the 1980s? It was the same concept. The wider shoulders and big hair gave the figure a more balanced, hour-glass shape, as opposed to a pear shape.

Of course, there is no way to disguise huge hips, but if the hips are only a few inches wider than the top half of the body, fuller hair can help offset them.

Agreed! Blondie looks great with either long or short hair...

For myself, I've never looked good in short hair, but I do look OK with my longer hair up. Don't know why that is, but whatever.

I've also experimented with being blonde. I looked invisible or nearly dead (depending on the lighting)... neither one of those was what I wanted, so I went back to red.

It feels like me. And I think that's key. When you feel good about how you look, I think you actually DO look better.

Maybe it's the confidence or the sexy vibe you put out.

As for fuller hips, wear a lower neckline and no one will notice ;)

TY, I wore them to a Red Hat Luncheon 2day & the ladies liked them...they were easy on & off, I am glad I ordered a 2nd set, I may even go for a 3rd set that is a little bit shorter. I like Lilli Marlene's concept w/ hair, u can change it & never have a bad hair day :o)

I've never understood the facination some have with worrying about
what others do. I don't think there is a link between age and hair length.
I think it depends entirely on what you like and the condition of your
hair. If you look in the mirror and like what you see, doesn't matter what
anyone else thinks.

I don't actually know what clip extensions are, but I think Blonde Angel
looks nice with longer hair...but then I think she looked nice before as well.
When people are happy with themselves, it tends to show.

I'm one of those people that's pretty much had the same hairstyle since
high school, except it's a little shorter now. I like it. I've only wondered a
few times about getting it cut, and then I decided not to. If I want to experiment
with short hair, I can get wigs.

Anyways, I can't imagine the cutting of my hair to get more into style or to get
with the times is going to rock or change anyone else's world, so I'll wait another
10 years before I seriously consider a change.

Unless of course cutting of one's hair will help in the search for a significant other?

Not that I'm looking, I'm just wondering.

I think the condition of the hair and what the individual looks like with long/med/short hair is what's important also......but there are still a lot of people that feel longer hair should be for "teenagers' only. I think most people ultimately do what makes them feel good about themselves but it's always interesting to hear some of the reasons people think long hair on a woman after a certain age is a no no.

I think folks should go with what ever makes them feel good and what ever looks good on their face. Pizz on the "thin hair/wide hips" crowd...I mean, really?

One of my best gal friends right now has breast cancer, she just finished chemo and has no hair - but...she has 5 new wigs, she named them all, Lola is short, blonde and perky, Trixie is a redhead, etc. She has them in 5 different styles, colurs and length. She says this is the only fun she's had lately...picking hair.

So, go with what ever makes you happy and to hell with what someone else says.
