| | offended?Page 2 of 2 (1, 2) | oh some get very aeraeted and hissy on certain subjects but overall it can be very entertaining as battle lines are drawn up and the jousting begins.
this year in the edinburgh festival they have revived the ancient tradition of flyting. a lad who i go to the football with is taking part in a flyting about scottish independence
Flyting dates back to Anglo Saxon times, but became a form of public entertainment in Scotland in the 15th and 16th centuries when makars, or poets, would engage in verbal contests of abuse. James IV and James V encouraged “court flyting”. A contest between William Dunbar and Walter Kennedy in front of James IV is said to include the earliest recorded use of the word “s***” as a personal insult.
Flytings also appear in several of Shakespeare’s plays. And while the language is often crude, flyting itself is seen as quite a skill and has been described as “the verbal equivalent of virtuoso sword-play”.

and to think in eminems film 8 mile the rap battles are seen as cutting edge
maybe a flyting forum would be in order?

| offended? Posted: 7/26/2012 1:47:21 PM | A flyting forum would be hilarious! I "met" an online friend from Scotland at a flaming forum quite a few years ago. He went off on a funny rant about being so angry his nostrils were flared. Well, of course, I was smitten. It's quite a skill to be able to go at people without anyone taking offence.
I prefer to lurk than participate

Perhaps you should explain your point in more depth. Maybe I don't get it because I am not your social equal.

I don't see the point in wasting my energies getting offended by every little thing - especially on here, when we're all dealing with online personas - some real - some not.
I let the offensive behaviors be the problem of the one that's generating them !

| offended? Posted: 7/26/2012 2:28:30 PM | | offended, not really in the sense you're speaking. I tend to get offended for humanity as a whole. | |

| offended? Posted: 7/26/2012 7:12:09 PM | Political correctness offends me... | |

| offended? Posted: 7/27/2012 3:02:53 AM | | I think the liberals are easily offended. I posted a question yesterday and had several attack me for being a conservative. Is it my fault if I'm looking for someone with similar beliefs and state that in my profile? If you don't like it just move along! | |

| offended? Posted: 7/27/2012 7:32:09 PM | | I doubt that few women have a problem moving along--I hope that doesn't offend you. | |

| offended? Posted: 7/28/2012 10:24:30 PM | | Personally, no I don't offend easily. I don't get offended easily in real life, and certainly not by the "cyber bullies." Why would I allow anyone who I haven't any real connection with, or feelings for, offend me? If anyone does get offended by what someone may say in the forums. just remember there is always the shut down feature of your computer. | |

its not being offended online lol.. i am asian myself and lately iv spoken to a girl that has no problem with asians whatsoever but she will make fun and crack a joke about them...
i suppose it maybe my fault if i get offended and even though we get along i dont know if i should be brushing these jokes off or not. There are some things that I find offensive, but I don't know that I get offended terribly often any more.
Some Jewish Mama jokes about eating all your food and taking a jacket in case of rain (despite a heatwave) I find amusing. Gas oven jokes kinda turn my stomach a little, however. To me, a joke has to be funny by definition and default.
I'm generally not fond of racist jokes. They tend to be hostile, or just plain lacking in wit. People tend to become defensive when you challenge them as well, with the usual, "Oh, you've got no sense of humour" retorts. I have, that's why I don't find them funny.
Some cultural jokes are not so much offensive as simply wearing because they're so goddam old.
I can appreciate you might have a limit to your patience, whether the jokes are particularly offensive, or not. To not say anything can leave one pandering to another's self-esteem, whilst they depreciate yours, whether they intend to, or not, whether it affects your self-esteem, or not. Its still an unpleasant behaviour pattern to have to tolerate.
I tend to bite the bullet, suffer the defensive reactions and let people know I don't want to hear it. I've got better things to talk and laugh about. If they flounce off, so be it.

I get a kick out those that feel the need to private message me and "explain" their comments if I disagree or "offend" them with my opinion!
