The Original American Martini Recipe
1 1/2 oz. gin
1/2 oz. sweet vermouth
1/2 oz. dry vermouth
Dash of orange bitters
Stir with cubed ice, strain into chilled****ail glass.

The Classic Martini
1 1/2 oz. gin
1/2 oz. dry vermouth
Stir with cubed ice, strain into chilled****ail glass.

The Modern Martini
1 1/2 oz. gin or vodka
1/4 oz. or no vermouth
Stir with cubed ice, strain into chilled****ail glass.

Variations

Dry = No vermouth, serve with a twist
Gibson = Serve with****ail onions
Dirty = Made with olive juice

Shaken Not Stirred?
A shaken supposedly "bruises" the gin and some people claim they can actually taste it! 007's Martini was actually a Vesper.

Vesper

2 oz. Gin,
1 oz. Vodka,
Splash of Lillet

Shake with ice to serve on the rocks, or Strain to serve up in a chilled****ail glass, Garnish with lemon twist

To what modern consumers consider a Martini is not what the old time Martini drinkers of today consider a Martini. To them "dry" means a tad of vermouth. Dry now days often means just a "glance" at the bottle of vermouth. So popular vodka has become, bartenders complain that they have to ask if the consumer wants their Martini made with gin or vodka.

The evolvement continues and I can hear some old time bartenders rolling over in their graves over what is now considered a Martini. Neo-Classic Martinis are making there way into the bar scene at a surprising rate. The advent of very chilled****ails served up in a****ail glass (what some refer to as a Martini glass) has given rise to a trend of calling****ails "Martinis. Here are a few examples: Chocolate Martini,Hennessey Martini

My favorite is an ORGASM MARTINI

1 1/2 parts vodka
splash Triple Sec
splash White Creme de Cacao
Strain into a martini glass.
Garnish with an orange.

If you love Sambucca (licorice), you'll love this one. It's called a Black & Blue and is Anais's invention. It's a variation of the traditional Blue Lagoon. We've included the original Blue Lagoon recipie too as I haven't seen it here yet and it's very good as well.

Black ‘n Blue
- 2 oz vodka
- 3/4 oz blue curacao
- 1/4 oz black sambuca
- juice of 1/2 lime
- twist of lime (optional)

Blue Lagoon
- 2 oz vodka
- 1 oz blue curacao
- juice of 1/2 lime
- twist of lime (optional)

For both, shake all but the garnish with crushed ice and pour into a martini glass.

Caution!!! These martinis contain 3 oz of alcohol - most people can only handle one. Anais can drink three ... Anais, do you want to say anything about that??!!!

I have finally found the perfect (but if you have one you like better, let me know) "Lemon Drop" martini.
Absolut Citron
Triple Sec
Sweet n Sour
Fresh lemon squeeze
Use superfine sugar for the rim.

Chocolate Martini
Absolut Vanilla
White Creme de Cocao
Splash of Frangelico
Clean rim and no chocolate sprinkles, syrup, powder, etc., for me.

Well, one could never go wrong, with this culturally significant recipe:

The Vesper

3 measures of Gordon's Gin
1 measure of vodka
1/2 measure Kina Lillet vermouth

Shake it very well until it's ice cold, pour into a deep champagne glass. Garnish with a slice of lemon peel.

Vodka is for beginners!

In a shaker of ice:
2 ounces of gin
hint of vermouth

In a glass:
Ice
Drop of scotch

Swirl ice in glass with scotch, discard. Shake gin with vermouth... strain into glass... add a twist of lemon or lime (very small!). Enjoy. Repeat.

Update: I have found a new "Lemon Drop Martini" recipe and it is THE winner.

2 oz Citron Vodka
2 oz Margarita Mix (without alcohol)
1 oz Triple Sec
1 T Fresh Lemon Juice
1 t sugar

Put sugar in a stainless steel shaker. Add lemon juice and blend. Add ice and all other ingredients. Shake, strain and serve in glass with sugared rim. Yum!

Here is a Gummy Bear recipe that I found. The rest are just ones that I happen to love that all taste like pie....yummy..nothing better than dessert in a glass!

GUMMY BEAR

1/2 ounce Amaretto
1/2 ounce grenadine
1/2 ounce melon liqueur (Midori)
3 ounces orange juice
3 ounces pineapple juice
1/2 ounce Southern Comfort

Add ice, stir to chill and strain into your Martini Glass.

BANANA CREAM PIE

2 oz. Light rum
½ oz. Creme de banane
½ oz. Godiva Liqueur
½ oz. White creme de cacao

Pour rum and liqueurs into mixing glass. Add ice, stir to chill and strain into your Martini Glass.

KEY LIME PIE

1 1/2 oz Vodka
1 1/2 oz Liqor 43 or French Kiss
Splass of pineapple juice
Splass of Rose's lime
1 oz Half and Half or milk
Graham cracker crumbs on rim of glass

Add ice, stir to chill and strain into your Martini Glass.

PUMKIN PIE

2 parts Absolut Vanila vodka
1 part pumpkin schnapps
Splash of cream (or substitute a splash of orange juice)
Nutmeg

Instructions
Shake all the ingredients in a****ail shaker with ice and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with nutmeg and cherry.

CARMEL APPLE PIE

1 1/2 ounce skyy spiced vodka
1 1/2 ounce dekuyper sour apple pucker schnapps
1 ounce butterscotch schnapps
1/2 ounce Amaretto
1/2 teaspoon vanilla (optional)
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
1 teaspoon sugar (optional)
1/2 tablespoon graham cracker crumbs (optional)
apples, slices (optional)

Directions:

Combine vodka, amaretto, and the 2 schnapps in a****ail shaker with ice; shake until cold and blended.

Combine cinnamon, sugar, and cracker crumbs on a small plate. Pour vanilla on another small plate and dip rims of two martini glasses.

Dip wet rims into the sugar mixture. Pour the cold****ail mixture into the glasses. Garnish with an apple slice and a pinch of the leftover sugar mixture.

Alternatively instead of rimming the glasses, you can just mix the sugar and cinnamon together, and add a bit to each glass after pouring the drinks

sigh..there is only ONE way to make a perfect DRY martini

glass chilled in freezer
Bombay Sapphire chilled in freezer

NOTHING else

If I am feeling adventuresome...MAYBE a thin piece of lemon zest

If a drink tastes of red gummy bears, it is NOT A MARTINI!!

Thank you Firebirdz

Having spent 20 years in food service and hospitality I spent many of those as a bartender. I learned and worked with bartenders who learned their craft in European Hotels. And the pride and joy of my collection is a c0cktail recipe book from the forties put together by one of the most famous bartenders of the era. Walter Winchell was always publishing this guy's recipes.

The classic recipe you quoted is the original and so is the one for a "dry" martini. More vermouth then most people realize. The trick I used for a dry martini was to fill the shaker glass half full of ice, pour in the vermouth and swirl it around. Then I would dump it all into the sink, load up with fresh ice and then pour in the gin or vodka and swirl or shake according to the costumers preference. Strain into a martini glass and add a lemon twist. (For those clients who didn't understand why the twist, I would take a length of lemon peel, light a match and let them watch as the oils from the peel ingnited.)

However the most important thing I learned is the "secret" to a great martini. It's the ice. Good clean cracked ice and lots of it. The water from the melting ice is what allows the gin and the vermouth to blend.

To be honest I don't like martini's, but I was complimented time and again during my bartending carreer. I had one client who only drank martini's at my bar. He drank scotch everywhere else he went.

Slainte! Everyone

And to who the fox

Your recipe is not a martini either. It's gin, straight. A martini has vermouth in it.

Technically, a VERY DRY martini merely has the vermouth bottle passed OVER the martini glass. But then, I am a purist. src=http://www.plentyoffish.com/smiles/icon_OO.gif border=0>

Remove glass from chilled source, swirl Blue Curacoa in glass and dump excess

My version of a Black Martini...

3 oz. Vox Raspberry Vodka
1/2 oz. Chambord

Chill glass add EXTREMELY chilled mixture, sip, say ahhhhh...

When Jackie Gleason was asked if he wanted an olive in his martini he said "If I wanted a salad, I would have ordered a salad!"

I am also a purist, and prefer Tanqueray No 10 in my 'real' martinis.....but being a bartender have several of the 'foo-foo' martinis up my sleeve--

Espresso Martini-2 oz Vanilla Vodka, 1 shot espresso, 1/4 oz kahlua, garnish w/lemon twist

Apple Pie Martini-2 oz Apple Vodka (3 Olives is my preferance), 1/4 oz Frangelico, 1/4 oz Goldschlager

If you are partial to the foo foo tini's please, please, PLEASE---never take your drink back to your bartender and say 'Excuse me, this tastes like alchohol'. If you just want the pretty glass stick to highballs!

Hmmmm.... not a purist at all... I don't even like martini's, real or imagined. I *do* however have a recipe for a "martini" that all the ladies love and ALWAYS ask for when I'm around:

2 oz Godiva white chocolate liqueur
1 oz Player's Extreme Caramel vodka

Chill glass in freezer for at least 15 minutes
Shake ingredients vigorously with ice
Remove glass from freezer and drizzle in dark chocolate Magic Shell syrup
Pour mix into glass
Garnish with a maraschino cherry, stem down (bonus for "tying the knot" after three of these...)

It is perfectly acceptable to lick the inside of the glass (watch out for the chocolate stripe that will appear on the bridge of your nose and chin...) or use your fingers to get it out... it's chocolate, right???

Sometimes I'll bump the mix up to 1:1 after the first two drinks... with fair warning of course!

I've heard that Player's is no longer making their caramel vodka and I have yet to find any other brands in the store.... soooooooo.... the next bottle I buy will be vanilla flavored, I suppose. Another substitution to consider is using Amarula rather than the Godiva. You get twice as much for two-thirds the price and I don't recall anyone having noticed the difference.
