| Is Internet shorthand causing you headaches too? Posted: 6/17/2008 6:58:55 AM | | I know this is an old thread, but isn't this why we do thread searches?! But to answer the question..YES!!! I will forgive a '2' here or a '4' there, maybe even a 'U R' if I am in a good mood. But a paragraph full of this, or a profile written totally in internet shorthand, especially by anyone over about 25, is a huge turn off. And TyPiNg lIkE tHiS, OR LIKE THIS..about as sexy as canned hash! | |

I wish people would understand that ALL CAPITAL LETTERS IS YELLING!!!!!!1!!!one!!!1!!11!
But capitalizing ONE word in a properly punctuated sentence is just emphasizing the point.

I think everyone would be better off if they learned the local language, Internet slang in this case, before complaining about other people not making sense.
Most of the posters here are using some form of slang, or even Internet slang to complain about Internet slang.
msg1: "It seems awfully rude to lump ALL people in one category"- capitalizing mid-sentence and entire words is Internet slang. It is often assumed to be a mistake if used anywhere except the Internet.
msg2: "OT: You're and Your misuse bugs me."- Using "OT" instead of "opening topic" is slang from Internet forums
msg4: "You can't open a thread of - 3 or more pages - and not be confronted with this issue."- Using "3" instead of "three"
msg5: "Yea, it kinda drives me nuts to."- Using "nuts" to refer to a state of mind instead of cashews and almonds
msg7: "its mainly the spelling that gets me."- Using the possessive form of "it". Should have used the short form of "it is", "it's".
msg8: "While I do believe that we on the forum Can't all be as refined and sophisticated as you are professor Leaopard, I must agree to the extent of threast or post that start to become giberish."- Can't should not be capitalized mid sentence.
msg9: "Even that drives us nuts! lmao"- lmao is short for "laugh my ass off"
msg10: "I wasn't picking on you... but I must say it does bug me"- Misplaced periods, should have been a comma
It would just be absurd for me to go to Australia and complain about the slang there. Aussie: "So whats it like in Canada, mate?". Me: "You should know that you are using 'mate' out of context. It doesn't sound right when you arbitrarily add 'mate' to the end of sentences. I mean it's just common sense, eh?"
