| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 7/26/2007 11:13:42 AM | That's a tough question, so here's my take.
The number 1 sporting legend has to have been someone who changed sports. It's much easier to pick individual sports, but sports in general? Too broad of a question. Here's a few examples.
Soccer(Football, Futbol, whatever): This one is tough because the sport is played throughout the world. I would have to give this to Pele. His play put Brazil on the map as a soccer nation and kids all over try to emulate him to this day.
Football: Much easier to pick in a sport that's less than 200 years old. But my pick here isn't a player, but a coach. Vince Lombardi. Gave the most motivational speeches of all time to his players before the big game, and his Packers won the first ever Super Bowl, bringing National, and Worldwide attention to the sport. Lombardi was the ideal coach. Even if you made up a person, just to be a coach, he would be that guy. Even I think that first SB would have been much less prolific had my Cowboys beat the Packers in that "Ice Bowl" game.
Basketball: So... Many... Iconic... People! There's just too many people who are iconic to the game to make a definitive pick. In this case, I'll take it back to the very beginning. My pick for Basketball is NOT Michael Jordan, or Larry Bird. The pick: Dr. James A. Naismith. If he didn't introduce his wacky game of throwing a ball into a basket 10 feet up, we wouldn't know who Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Jerry West, anyone, who has ever played the sport of Basketball on a worldwide stage. Most of Naismith's ideas of the original game of basketball are still used to this very day. Basketball is an Olympic sport played on a worldwide stage every 4 years.
Combat Sports(Boxing, Wrestling, MMA, UFC, that stuff): One name sticks out in this ENTIRE category of sporting. Muhammad Ali. If it wasn't for his flamboyancy, nobody would really pay attention to any of the sports mentioned above. Maybe locals watching people beat each other up for money, that's about it. Not only was Muhammad Ali a great boxer, but also a great advocate for freedom of speech. One of the defining moments of his lifetime was telling the US government where to stick their Vietnam War. His presence on the world stage gave little Black children all over the world hope for a brighter future.
Golf: This sport wasn't really paid attention to on a national stage as a competitive sport. Mostly just a leisure activity old people do. That being said, my pick is going to be a little odd. I pick Tiger Woods. The main reason is the Youth and Charisma he brought to the sport of Golf. He's the guy that inspired me to take up Golf as a sport. He's my only current day pick, but will definitely be in the sports hall of fame. Tiger is one of the few golfers who gets as much attention from all walks of life, ever.
Other(Not the mentioned sports above): For every other sport out there, only 2 names comes to mind. One competitive, one not. Lance Armstrong and Terry Fox. Both were cancer victims, only one of them defeated their cancer. Lance Armstrong is living proof that one can beat cancer, and become a world class athlete. The story of Lance should inspire everybody with cancer that they can beat it, and lead a normal lifestyle afterwards. Terry Fox wasn't so lucky when it came to his cancer. Terry was one of the most determined people of all time. He gained attention by doing a charity run across Canada, from Newfoundland, to British Columbia. What made his run different from all others who attempt such a feat, is that Terry's cancer spread throughout his body, and had a prosthetic leg. His "Marathon of Hope" inspired an entire nation to help contribute to the cause. He had to quit running by the time he reached Thunder Bay, Ontario. For his efforts, Terry Fox was awarded "Companion of the Order of Canada" (Demonstrated the highest degree of merit to Canada and humanity, on the national or international scene.). You will not go ANYWHERE in Canada where nobody knows who Terry Fox was. He was voted most famous Canadian of the 20th century and Number 2 on the "Greatest Canadian" list. The "Terry Fox Run" is held around the world every year, to raise money for cancer research, which is held every second Sunday following Labour Day.
There's my list of greatest sporting legends. Hope ya liked.

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 8/5/2007 5:52:23 PM | Pele can't be the best. He played a sissy sport. Soccer players by definition don't qualify as they only play soccer because they aren't good enough to play a different sport. I would pick a Marathon runner over a soccer player.
Name just one soccer player that could play in the NFL or NHL or Major League Baseball.
I would go with Babe Ruth or Wayne Gretsky or Jim Brown.

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 8/20/2007 9:02:17 AM | This one will vary depending on where exactly in the world you are or your favourite sport. Mine Is Kenny Dalglish former Liverpool footballer.Kenny signed for my beloved reds when I was at the tender age of three. He replaced the 'Un-replaceable' Kevin Kegan in Liverpools famous number seven shirt. Being from a totally football mad family (all good reds) he became my hero and my first Liverpool shirt my Gran (RIP Gran) bought me had a number seven added to the back because I wanted to be just like him. He served the club as a player from 1977-1990 and as a manager from 1986-1991. Fro me 'King Kenny' has had no other equal as a footballer (better than Best) and also as man. After the Hillsbrough disaster in 1989 when 96 fans died as a result of poor planning and ticket allocation, he was a rock for everyone, despite feeling as low and as bad as the rest of us. Legend is a very over-used term in sport, but for me he is THE LEGEND, as a player and more importantly a Man, he has no equals. | |

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 8/20/2007 5:26:24 PM | Pele is a volcano.
It doesn't count as a sport unless it ends in the word "ball". Baseball, basketball, football (not kickball or "soccer" as you Yanks call it).
Basketball: Scotty Pippen. How many NBA titles did Jordan win before the arrival of Scotty? Football: Joe Montana. He could throw a ball coked up better than any d**n Yankee. Baseball: This one's a trivia question: 1. One year, for all players with 25 games or more, he led the majors in slugging average. 2. Next year, for all pitchers with 25 games or more, led the majors in ERA. 3. He is the only player EVER to have (minimum twenty five games, two seasons) a single-season ratio of slugging average to ERA greater than one. 4. For all pitchers who pitched 400 or more games (Koufax pitched 397, but even counting Koufax this is no contest) his career strikeouts to walks ratio leads, and it's possible that records 1, 2 and 4 will never be broken. Name that major leaguer!
