Surround Kobe Bryant with some talent and see what happens, though. Kobe Bryant is the best player in the world by far, but he's surrounded by an NBDL team.

I think that in answering this forum, it all boils down to who you think is best by your personal favorite. For instance if Wayne Gretzky played hockey in the sixties or fifties, he probably would have been killed by those guys. He never once passed his physical in hockey. There were players like Bobby Orr, Maurice Richard, Bobby Hull, Guy LaFleur, Gordie Howe, etc. Baseball had guys like Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Roger Marris, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantel, Cal Ripkin Jr., etc. They were all great at what they did, in fact how can anyone just pick a single person to say he's the best over all is just ludicrist. There are way too many sports figures who excelled in their specific sport to just pick one. It's just a matter of who a certain person likes best and what era they grew up in.

let's be honest guys!

if football is the best and most important sport on the earth, then the number one legend must be a footballer.

howeber, i will NOT say Pele as he is mainly a creation of marketing. yes he was a great player, but to call him the number is silly.

Football: Distefano, Klinsmann, Hugo Sanchez, Maradona, etc
Basketball: Michael Jordan, Larry Birdie.
Tennis: Andre Agassi.
Baseball: Baby Ruth (never watched him, but newspapers say he was the best so be it) .
American Football: (never watched him, but many Americans say he was the best, why should i disagree with them?)

Thats easy, it is Wayne Gretzky. Why? because if you look at all the sport superstars you will see that he constantly quadrupled the points in a single season that other good hockey players could only wish to attain. If you look at other sports such as basketball you will see that even Michael Jordan could'nt quadruple the amount of points of other good basketball players, maybe double the amount but not quadruple. Besides his amazing point accumalation he expanded hockey's marketability on a world stage. He also helped build the team that won the gold medal at the Olympics. His ability to "see the ice" and make the right play like a quarterback in football is legendary. Besides all his accomplishments one thing remained that set him apart from most of the other spoiled superstars today. He has class, does'nt need the trash talk or acts like a spoiled brat (ie. see any basketball game). Integrity and acting like a gentleman on and off the ice was always Waynes way. They say that in all of sports the Stanley Cup is the hardest trophy to win. People play through serious injuries, get stitched up on the bench to go back on the ice the next shift. Besides football, it is the toughest sport there is. A real mans sport. Geesh, in basketball I have seen guys hurt there little pinky finger and fall to the floor as if they just broke their arm. It makes me laugh hard when I see this.

Honestly, how is anyone putting Larry Bird in this discussion? Is it solely because he's WHITE? Yes, Larry Bird was a great player. However, we're talking about the greatest sports legend of all-time and he's not even a top 5 greatest basketball player of all-time, IMO.

Jordan
Magic
Bill Russell
Wilt
Kareem

These are just 5 guys ahead of Bird. There could be a plethora of other guys ahead of him depending on your opinion.

Tennis: Andre Agassi.

Agassi was my favorite tennis player, but Pete Sampras, a player in his own era was better than him.

It's a toss up for me between Michael Jordan and Jim Brown

Or Kobe can do what Michael did and make the others around him better. Also, Lebron didn't have a team AT ALL and look what he did......nevermind, i forgot their in the east.

You talk about racism? That is why Steve Nash did'nt get a third MVP last year even though year after year he carries his team on his back. He was body checked and given a bloody nose but still kept competing. How many times have I seen basketball players hurt their baby finger and fall to the ground acting like they just broke their arm. They should all take the time to go see a real mans sport like Hockey or football. These guys get stitched up and they are back on the ice or feild the very next shift. They break bones, loose teeth, etc. but they do not whine and cry about it or take two weeks off to heal. Hockey and football are the best sports, heck, even soccer players have grit and play through pain more than basketball players. Steve Nash is just a tiny white guy in a sport dominated by extremely tall people but look at his stats and the way he plays and sets his team mates up. For a man of short stature he competes and excels against men almost two feet taller than him. Thats what you call heart. What else can you expect though from him but nothing but the best, after all he is Canadian and coming from a country who has the toughest team sport in hockey it does'nt surprise me at all if he continues to play even with getting body checked to the floor or given a bloody nose.
I do'nt know but once you have seen a good Hockey or football game it makes you realize just how "girlie like" basketball really is. It is filled with whiners. Thank god for Steve Nash showing his toughness and determination.

There is only 1 major sport in this planet. This sport is called football. Narrow minded North Americans call it soccer.
The greatest football player has to be the number one sporting legend of all the time.
as i mentioned above that is the brazilian dude called Pele

Yeah, I can see if you were brought up in an enviroment where soccer was king you could develope into a real fan of the game. If you are brought up in North America, especially Canada where winters are cold and you got to be tough you would appreciate the following;
- The FASTEST team sport on the planet --- someone on skates can move much faster than someone running, passes can travel 100 kms or more per hour, lightening quick play making decisions.
- The TOUGHEST team sport on the planet --- High speed checks, frozen pucks solid as a bullet flying at faster speeds than a baseball. ( Al Iafrate hit 107 miles an hour on a slap shot..). Players get stitched up in between shifts and sent back out to compete. Enforcers duking it out in heated contests and not barred from the game.
When you go to a NHL Stanley Cup game notice the people in the crowds and you will see something amazing. They are all standing throughout the game longer than I have seen in any other team sport. The game is just that exciting and high speed that you do not want to miss a second of it.
Hockey is the true sport of todays gladiators...

I'd say either Jackie Robinson or Warren Moon for being the most notable individuals to breakdown colour barriers. They helped pave the way for a lot of great athletes to be able to live their dreams in professional sports.

i could maybe understand willie thrower.

But what colour barrier did he break down? How many black quarterbacks gave up that position just so they could play in the NFL before Warren Moon came along, and how many were able to keep playing that position afterwards? Thrower didn't change the attitudes of owners, coaches, players, nor fans. Warren Moon is the one who changed the way the NFL looked at black quarterbacks.

Or Kobe can do what Michael did and make the others around him better.

MJ is better than Kobe Bryant, IMO. However, Michael had Scottie Pippen, a player much better than any of Kobe's current teammates. Scottie was an all-world defender and an all-star. MJ also had Horace Grant and Dennis Rodman, two legitimate hall of fame players and all-stars at some point in their career. Kobe has no current teammate that's ever been an all-star. Plus, MJ wasn't a champion until he was 28. Kobe just turned 29 and he was the facilitator for a 3-peat. Kobe made the plays down the stretch for that 3-peat and was dominant defensively.

The fact that we're even comparing a player to MJ says a lot about that player. (Kobe Bryant)

Also, Lebron didn't have a team AT ALL and look what he did......nevermind, i forgot their in the east.

Not only was Lebron in the east, but he had a better supporting cast than Kobe, IMO. Gooden, Zydrunas, Hughes, and company are better than Odom, Smush, Luke and company, IMO.
