Posted: 5/18/2008 4:06:26 AM | | 90% of the people named on here could not possibly be "number one sporting legend" simple because the world is not made up of just canada and america and thats the only countries those people named are heard of.soccer you have pele maradona,will give lance armstrong a mention although still feel there was something illegal used there even though it was to help his illness,ali and i cant believe no one mentioned mike tyson in that category because before all the bad incidents happened and mike was in his early 20`s there is not a man on the planet who would be able to handle him and that includes ali in his prime.as much as i dont watch baseball or basketball babe ruth and michael jordan would be up there too | |

for the purpose of the thread i expect we are using definition 3.
As a result i would of thought anyone who has brought their sport in to disrepute would no longer be eligable.

Muhammed Ali, He fought so many great fight in the ring if went on to fight three or four to many! he also fought the US Government & won a moral victory

I think they have to be divided by sport. WHY? the question is pretty simple and infers the most internationally famous,widely admired,storied athelete. Of course YOU can add whatever you wish however the question of this thread does not need to be devided by sport.
Ali....hands down. Narly 30 years after his career has been over(40yrs past prime), after the sport has lost tons of popularity and he is STILL the most reverered sports figure worldwide.
Pele is very popular and might be 2nd. Jordan is 2nd or 3rd as basketball has popularity on all continents and Jordan like Ali transcends his sport. His logo may be the most recognizable in the world. Tiger is now closing fast on both Jordan and Pele dispite the fact that golf is not as popular worldwide as Soccer and basketball.
Ruth isn't even known outside of north America. | |

Most Americans have never heard of Maradona, let alone most Indians, Philipinos, Saudis, Egyptians, Austrailians, Fijans ect. Maradona dispite being 1 of the top 5 footballers of all time is best known in South American/latin America and more intensely in his home of Argentina than elsewhere. Pele is the best known and most storied Footballer. Even he falls short of the fame of Ali globally. | |

Posted: 12/3/2008 3:08:05 PM | My #1 Sporting Legend is a 5 time MVP winner, 2 time NCAA Champion, Olympic Gold Medalist, 12 time All-Star, and an 11 time Champion in his sport. He is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, FIBA Hall of Fame, and 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. He coached his team to 2 championships while playing. He averaged 15 points, 4 assists and 22 rebounds over his career and we could only imagine how many blocks he would have had if they kept this statistic when he played.

Tiger Woods is dominating a sport more than any other player is doing in their sport today.
