| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 12/10/2008 10:53:41 PM | I say it's a non-human, Secretariat!
Can also throw in the monkey that rode into outer space or the monkey in Shock The Monkey, Peter Gabriel's video.
That's one whacked out monkey. I'd hate to go up against it in the squared circle.

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 12/11/2008 4:37:55 AM | | I would vote for either Wayne Gretzky or Wilt Chamberlain. No one else dominated their respective sports the way they did. | |

| who is the number 1 in all of sports? Posted: 12/11/2008 6:21:34 PM |
I say it's a non-human, Secretariat!
absolutely. while we may, just possibly, see another player rival jordan or another fighter rival ali, we will never, ever, see anything come close to secretariat's belmont. 35 years and no one has even approached his 2:24. smarty (whom i adore)won the preakness by 11 1/2 lengths and everyone thought that was huge! and it was, certainly. but secretariat, taking the belmont by 31 lengths, was in another dimension altogether.

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 2/22/2009 8:18:17 PM | | Great question that deserves a mutitude of opionated answers. Many obvious answers have been thrown out. Couldn't disagree with any of them. But let's throw out another name. Bo Jackson. 2 sport athlete. Was great in both sports on and off fields & at all levels. | |

@ Micheal Jordan being the # 1 sporting legend. Yes, a great player. Arguably the greatest to play in the NBA ever. However, there still is debate amongst people who know NBA basketball that Wilt, Russell or the Big O might be the greatest of all time. So forget MJ, who wasn't even the all-time NBA scoring leader when he retired. Part of MJ's greatness was his marketability. Hence the ton of MJ responses.
Regarding sporting legend: What's the criteria? Greatest of all time or most noticable athlete in world history?
Greatest athlete of all time: Jim Thorpe. Olympic gold medalist in the pentathalon and decathalon, NFL Hall of Famer, former Major League Baseball player and pro basketball player.
Most noticable athlete: Muhammad (spelling is wrong,...been drinking) Ali

Bill Russell held his own vs. Wilt. Plus, he won two hands worth of titles to Wilt's one finger.
Gretzky was the man. All time goal scorer. If he never scored a goal, he'd still be the all time points leader. However, there was a de facto NHL rule vs. even looking at him wrong.
For the guy who said Mike Tyson in his prime. LMAO. Are you kidding me? He dodged the #1 contender Evander Holyfield for 2 years before Buster Douglas beat him. Tyson in his entire career never beat one quality fighter in his prime. Take a look at the list of people he fought. Hardly anyone worth mentioning.

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 2/23/2009 5:47:58 AM | | All time sports legend wow that's tough. Best one I saw was Mario Lemieux. Overcame cancer owns a team. I think someone else tied his skates for him in one of the cup years. He was/is royal in pittsburgh | |

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 2/23/2009 8:28:09 AM | | Michael Jordan is the greatest athlete to play in organized sports history. I know I might be biased being from the place where he is like GOD to us, but hey. I would have to say Babe Ruth is #2. | |

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 2/23/2009 4:00:28 PM | obviously the GREAT ONE Wayne Gretzky...
No one in ANY sport was so far ahead of the second best in that sport EVER and that will never happen again...
And Sumo Sumo, I have to laugh at people who actually think the league had a rule you couldn't hit Gretzky....many tried and missed due to his great athletic skills he learned playing lacrosse on how to roll away from a hit....and like all great players in his era there was someone on the team you'd have to answer to if you got a little 'stupid' with the star on the team...

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 2/23/2009 5:03:42 PM | | An Optimist: People for the most part stopped trying to hit Wayne in the 80s. Of course if they did, Messier would kill them. | |

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 2/24/2009 4:08:28 AM | Probably Pele or Diego Maradona. As they played the true world game, played all over the world.
i would say Michael Shumacher - 7 times world champion. Maybe Valentino Rossi another record world champion.

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 2/25/2009 5:02:08 PM | | I can't see any argument to beat babe ruth. Nobody even close. mj the best basketball player wayne gretzky best hockey player have nothing on what the babe did. The babe isn't the best player ever but without a doubt the greatest legend of any sport. The called shot, breaking his own record of 59 hrs to 60 and he had absolutely no competition besides lou gherig. 3 homeruns in one world series game, 714 homeruns. There was nobody within spitting distance for a long time.imo a better legend in basketball would be chamberlain with 106 points. I mean otto graham played in 10 straight championships but the legend of all legends is babe ruth. If u wanna talk best player ever then its a different answer | |

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 2/25/2009 6:33:32 PM | Muhammad Ali may have been the greatest of all time, But Bobby Jones is the number 1 sporting Lengend of all time. From 1923-1930 Bobby Jones won 13 Major Championships and still remains the only player to win all 4 Major Golf Championships in the same calander year. Something Tiger Woods will never do. Bobby Jones retired from playing competitive Golf at only 28 years old. | |
