There are only 2 athletes that stand head and shoulders above their contemporaries.
Wayne Gretzky is one. He holds almost every statistic for scoring and has the championships to go with it. Of course I heard just recently that Mark Messier has more championship rings the Gretzky and Lemioux combined. So wherre does he stand??
The one missing athlete from this list is considered a God in cycling. Ask anyone in cycling who is the greatest and always one name stands out. No, not Armstrong.
Eddy Merckx!!! Otherwise known as the canibal is the Greatest. Not even Jordan comes close.
Even Jordan has to give way to Kareem on all time scoring, Chamberlain on points in a game and who knows about rebounds. Ali was knocked out by Foreman, and his record is bested by others, probably even Joe Louis.
Pele won some World Cups, but is not the all time score leader.
Only Merckx is so far beyond in his sport that one needs to cast a wider net outside his sport to compare.
Out of 1500 races he won almost 500. A 30% winning record. That is 200 riders in a field and coming out on top 1 out of every 3 times. He won everything there was to win. And even after 7 Tour wins Armstrong is short of Merckx's number of days in the Maillot Jaune. He probably would have won a 6th Tour but was punched in the kidney by a spectator. That is how dominant he was that people began to resent his success. Even his adversaries admited that Merckx was at another level and they were riding for second place. Besides 5 Tour wins, there are 5 Giro's, a Vuelta, 4 World Championships, 7 Milan San Remo, and every significant spring classic.
Some ponder how Armstrong would do against Merckx in the Tour. The greatest Tour rider versus the best ever all around. Probably Merckx would come out on top because of his drive to win. Yeah he even needed to win as much as Armstrong is pushed. | |

Ahh he's owns the Coyotes, owns 61 NHL records, has won like 40 awards, 8 scoring titles, fastest to score 50 goals, Part OWNER of the Toronto Argo's of the CFL, has ran the Canadian Olympic team for the pass 4 years, The Worlds the pass 3 years.
Has put himself in the public eye in Canada many times, and was the reason why hockey grew in the States.
Has donated over 11 Millions dollars, and is in the Hockey Hall of Fame, also now coaching the Coyoties for the first time.
I still try to figure out he's able to still have his golf tourament each year and stay married with 3 of his kids playing hockey.
Only downfall is that I don't think he has visited Brantford too often, but his parents still live there. | |

What league is the best? MLB no question...retiring MLB players go to Japan and do well.Japanese STARS come to the MLB and do well to ok.Japanese baseball leagues are like the Spanishleague in basketball compared to the NBA.
As far as sports legends are concerned of course ALi is #1 and Pele is #2. Hockey,cycling,golf,tennis,even track and feild don't have the global following of boxing and futbol(football/soccer).Tiger Woods is certainly a HUGE name and without question the most global figure gold has EVER produced.Still,he doesn't have NEARLY the name recognition in Colombia as he does in the US.Ali and Pele are known on EVER continent in every nation.Also,testiment to their LEGEND is the FACT that they've BOTH been retired for decades. | |

I don't know in what span you are counting, including amateur racing, but I quite sure
that stat is for Professional wins I believe according to Velo News. Or you're the expert and
everyone at Velo News is wrong you're telling me.
Second I didn't know that this was a popularity contest. The Title was not who is the most
popular, but the greatest. On that note it comes down to Merckx or Gretzky. Those two dominated their respective sports more than any other athlete. But given the demands of cycling, I would place Merckx first.

This internet is sooo funny.How can you actually post an opinion about something you have no knowledge of,get corrected then without even checking a source come back and make similar false statements? Its the internet,do a search and you will find Ali-Foreman only occured ONCE! It was billed as Rumble in the Jungle,undefeated champForeman the most feared man in the sport was knocked out by Ali. Ali in his prime(before USA unlawfully stripped him of his rights)was UNDEFEATED! Mereck only won 35% of his races in his prime,even far LESS when you look at his career including post prime.Pls,LOOK IT UP!

Does this help? Come on now,it doesn't say most popular nor greatest,rather the title #1 sporting legend encompases BOTH and more. Regardless,an athlete with a 35% OR LESS winning record doesn't qualify He can be YOUR favorite........but #1 does imply worldwide recognition, more so than popularity.I doubt many cyclist period are well known in Fiji,Manilla,Hong Kong,New Deli,Brasilia,Adis Ababa,Legos,Veracruz,Kingston,Moscow,ect.
Ali and Pele BOTH have this........few(Jordan,Woods maybe/remotely Maradona) even come close.

Posted: 9/26/2005 5:14:27 PM | | gotta agree with marathonman on one thing...how does anyone not know about the rumble in the jungle?? anyone that could ever mistake the rope-a-dope with anything else cannot be included in this discussion. however, asking to pick between MJ, Ali, and Pele, for me, is like trying to rank gods...Pele's name, in his own words, even transcends the man; MJ's jumpman symbol is more recognized around the world than the Mickey Mouse symbol, and Ali---who doesn't know who the greatest is? all three were phenomenal talents in their sports and icons for generations of men and women...these are my picks, and two of them (Ali and Pele) I only wish I saw in their heyday. | |

MJ's jumpman symbol is more recognized around the world than the Mickey Mouse symbol,
Yep,I was surprised to hear many Chinese in mainland China who recognized the symbol for what and who it represents.I mean the Chinese govt. worked so hard to keep the masses away from western influence of marketing and...there is the JORDAN symbol and recognition of it. Kinda amazing. | |
