| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 9/27/2005 4:15:05 PM | I disagree, that it must be considered by SPORT but here are my choices by sport: Ahtletics-Jesse Owens/Carl Lewis Baseball-many greats......but I'd pick Oscar Charleston..yep..look him up Basketball-Jordan...played and bested Magic, Bird,Zeke,Barkley,Glide, the glove and Mailman Boxing-Ali.......as legend....Suger Ray Robinson as artist AmericanFootball-Jim Brown-Ilove Sweetness,Jonny U was amazing but Jim Brown was a 1 man team. Futbol(football/soccer)Pele Golf-Tiger Woods-Palmer and Nicklaus never had his worldwide LEGEND....WAIT,Golf may be considered a sport but golfers are NOT necessarily athletic.I really think golf and autosports should be regarded as bowling an shuffleboard. Gymnastics-Nadia Comaneci Hockey-Gretzky Motorsports-is this really a sport? certainly ranks with golf as 1 of the least athletic of "sports" Tennis-Pete Sampras Wrestling-Ghulum Mohammed the Great Gama
Still, the thread CLEARLY states #1 sports LEGEND.......of ALL sports that is Ali followed by Pele then Jordan.

Man o War had 20 wins and a second place in 21 races, went on to father 64 other winning horses, including eventual triple-crown winner War Admiral.....

I'd have to say that football player that quit playing to go serve in the war and was killed. He may not have been a legend, but he showed that its only a game, and there are more important things than money.
whether or not I agree with the war, doesn't change that he was willing to give up fame, fortune as well as his life to support his country. To me that makes him a legend.
Otherwise, I have to go with MJ, even if he is an @$$ in person:laugh: he was still the best basketball player I've ever seen

I think Royce Gracie. As he completely changed the way all martial artisists as well as boxing, kickboxing and wrestlers thought about real life fighting. And almost any human on the planet would know who he was.

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 9/30/2005 7:19:07 PM | | I would have to say...well i guess it depends on what you consider a legend, all around athlete or sports hero? Any of the NFL greats, CY Young, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle...i could name more than just one. | |

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 10/6/2005 6:50:31 AM | Alot of people are picking Jordan, but he's not even the freatest basketball player of all time. Wilt the Stilt was without a doubt the greatest basketball player in history. The man scored 100 points in a single game, he averaged more than 50 points for a season. Bill Russell is considered the greatest defender of all time, and he said they barely even tried stopping him one he got the ball. He was simply too good. They concentrated on the other guys and hoped that whatever points Wilt got would be enough to lose. He was as strong as Shaq, the man moved much quicker, had far more moves, could shoot from outside, and most of all, he could make free throws. When he was a teen, the man competed in track and field. Can you imagine watching all 6'9" of 17 year old dashing on a track? Yet he won a tonne of medals. He was simply the man. Shaq needs to homage! | |

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 10/11/2005 7:16:37 AM | The thread's topic is #1 sporting legend,NOT best athlete, not most popular in a particular region but #1 sports legend.
Now, as to who was the greatest BASKETBALL player is more subjective.I think basketball being a TEAM oriented game should have its greatest player to have the best TEAM and INDIVIDUAL accomplishments. Wilt has the best individual accomplishments(mostly due to the era)but basketball being a team sport requires team success. How many NBA titles did Wilt win? When evaluating greatest basketball player and looking at both team and individual accomplishments the nominees would be:Bill Russell,Kareem Abdul Jabar,Oscar Robertson,Wilt Chamberlin,Magic Johnson,Larry Bird,Shaquille O'neal and Micheal Jordan. The player with the most impressive COMBINATION of titles(and skills) is: Micheal Jordan

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 10/13/2005 8:21:45 AM | Boxing Legend: Jack Dempsey- plaster in the gloves when he fought Willard, hobo to heavyweight champ, married to Estelle Taylor (siren of the silent screen), painting of getting knocked out of the ring by the Wild Bull of the Pampas-Luis Firpo. 13 knockdowns in 2 rounds... Dempsey got back in the ring and won... Battle of the long count with the first heavyweight champ to retire undefeated as champ (Gene Tunney); knocked out future champ Jack Sharkey, worked as a wrestling referee and knocked out a wrestler in the ring... down on his luck again, became broke, worked as a waiter in San Francisco and other places, customer tried to walk out on check and Dempsey got his money back ... saved up enough to open a restaurant in Manhatten and got wealthy again...
Quite a guy...
Baseball: Babe Ruth.... (need I say more?)
also Satchel Paige... who made his players get off the field (actually, that's against the rules and technically a game can't be started until there are EIGHT players between the foul lines [excluding the catcher of course]) before pitching to the all time leading home run hitter of the negro leagues, Josh Gibson in the last game of the championship series. That's the story (legend) anyway...and was also said to have thrown a baseball in Kansas City...on a bet... all the way from home plate through a HOLE in the center field fence...400 feet away...
also Steve Dalkowski.. who was rumored to have thrown a baseball through a cyclone fence: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Dalkowski
"...Steven Louis Dalkowski (born June 3, 1939 in New Britain, Connecticut) is a retired left-handed pitcher in minor league baseball. He is sometimes called the fastest pitcher in baseball history and had a fastball that may have exceeded 100 mph (161 km/h). Some experts believe it went as fast as 110 mph (177 km/h), others that his pitches travelled at 105 mph (169 km/h) or less (the Guinness Book of Records records the fastest pitch ever as 100.9 mph (162.4 km/h) by Nolan Ryan). As no radar gun or other device was available to measure the speed of his pitches precisely, the actual top speed of his pitches remains unknown. Regardless of its actual speed, his fastball earned him the nickname "White Lightning".
Dalkowski was also famous for his unpredictable performance and inability to control his pitches. His alcoholism and violent behavior off the field caused him problems during his career and after his retirement. After he retired from baseball, he spent many years as an alcoholic, making a meager living as a migrant worker. He recovered in the 1990s, but his alcoholism has left him with dementia and he has difficulty remembering his life after the mid-1960s.
Screenwriter and film director Ron Shelton played in the minor leagues alongside Dalkowski. His 1988 film Bull Durham features a character named "Nuke" LaLoosh (played by Tim Robbins) who is based loosely on Dalkowski."

The dude owns a hockey team at one time a nfl team and is consintaly getting youth to play the sport." I hope you don't mean Gretzky who owned the Argos with John Candy and Bruce McNholl ?(SP?)...canadian youth always played hockey...if anything the American involvment in the game has decreased its monopoly in Canada. Definately Canada's Pele, good choice, but if it weren't for him we wouldn't have the northern Claifornia Ice Pigs or the North Carolina Hockey Rockers or whatever thehell they are called. My NHL includes Quebec. My pick....Diego Maradona, most legendary life, highest highs, lowest lows and back again, the most innovative, pure, undiplomatic player in the worlds sport.

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 6/20/2006 8:09:15 AM | If we use worldwide:
Easily top two: Ali and Pele - anywhere in the world if you were to name them the greatest boxer/soccer player these are the names that would come to mind for pretty much every generation.
Just NA: Then you include MJ and Wayne...both were great and changed the way the game was played and their talent level was so far higher then anyone else playing during their prime that they are the players that people strive to become.
In football (American Football not that sport we call soccer) there are few legends...there have been great players but none that have really stood out against the rest of the players. A couple that can be considered would be Jerry Rice, Walter Payton, Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, they stood above any other player in the NFL.

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 6/20/2006 8:43:13 AM | | Barry Sanders. The guy played for crap teams every year and every year he tore it up. Played 10 years, was a Pro Bolwer 10 times, had 10 1000 years, led the league in rushing 3 times, rushed for over 15,000 yrds with a 5 yrd average. All this while palying for the hopeless Deroit Lions. One of the most exciting players ever to watch in the history of sports | |

| who is the number 1 sporting legend? Posted: 6/20/2006 8:46:16 AM | Got it right on the top two devil. For cultural and social significance, worldwide recognition, and excellence in their sport.......Ali and Pele stand alone. Its not really even close. For North America and the various sports:
NHL-Gretzky(Howe, Orr and the others just as talented but Gretzky took hockey from a niche sport to the mainstream...unfortunately we're back to only Canadians caring about hocky again but that's another thread)
NFL-Jim Brown-dominant physical ability-way ahead of his time-maybe the only player from his era who could still excell today
NBA-Jordan
Golf- Nicklaus-I know you youngsters think Tiger is the man and maybe one day he will be, but not yet. Palmer was an icon but was never the player Nicklaus was. Not only did Jack win 18 majors but finished 2nd 20 more times. And did it in an era w/ persimmon head woods and steel shafts. Make Tiger play w/ the clubs Jack used in 1975 and you would see Jack's greatness more clearly.
Baseball-Roberto Clemente-refuse to pick anyone from the last 15-20 years because odds are they were jacked on steroids or hgh-and any players from before the 50's just could not match up physically. though for iconic status it is hard to ignore Ruth, DiMaggio, Mantle, Ted Williams, Stan Musial, Satchel Paige, or Willy Mays
