How do you define overweight?
Posted: 4/16/2007 10:33:05 AM
This past year & with the help of my Doctor, I lost 54 pounds.
I'm 5'11 and am now approx 40 pounds overweight. I'm at a plateau right now as my weight loss has slowed down considerably, but with patience & time, I know my goal of accomplishing a heathy weight is well-worth the effort. I'm learning a lot about nutrition & excercise and how it affects the body. I know that once I have reached my goal, I can do my best to keep myself healthy.

The Media (TV, Movies, Magazines, etc, The Modeling & so-called "Fashion Industry" is the worst for this!!) have some unrealistic ideas as to the appearances of what Beauty is. I'm certainly not looking to accomplish that sickly waif-like appearance or to fit into that size two dress.
Everybody is entitiled to thier opinion and to thier preferences, but it's wrong to judge others based solely on appearance. EG: If a person is overweight, it's assumed that they are lazy & don't know how to "take care of themselves".

I refuse to allow myself to feel "less than" or "not as good as" because I may not fit into the Media's "ideal" or anyone else's view of Beauty.
Who are they to judge? I could care less!!

FAT KID AND PROUD!
I was kinda big most of my childhood but an illness caused me to gain about 75 pounds in about 9 months (no, the illness wasn't pregnancy).
I was reading some of these posts even to the most liberal of posters I'm grossly obese in their opinion. I know I'm fat, and I'm happy. I can't run around the block but that could be the pack a day habit also. I don't over eat. I eat about 2.5 times a day and my caloric intake is about 1500. I stopped drinking pop, didn't lose an ounce. I stopped eating suger, didn't lose an ounce. When it's nice I walk to work, its not too far, but with the walk home, it's about a mile. Didn't lose an ounce.
I may be incredibly single and have been for a long itme. But remotly happy. I don't consider myself a BBW because those ladies are big everywhere and I'm not so much. I have come to love myself so much I named my stomach. His name is Vladimir, he's actually pretty cool when you get to know him.
I think almost all people are beautiful, overweight doesn't make you ugly, personality makes you ugly. Personality can allow you to overlook most "flaws". Now, on the other hand, if there is no personality than that allows for the flaws to show through. If all people saw this way, there would be a lot more "pretty" people who were considered "ugly"

Overweight? Can you walk down a wide aisle in a store and knock stuff off both shelves? Then I'd say you may have a problem.

It's impossible for Americans to know what "overweight" is. Since 75% of Americans are overweight, Americans call overweight "normal". On some dating websites I don't accept messages from girls who define their body type as "average" 'cause I know this actually means obese.

I am 5'10" and weigh 185 pounds. Now, go look at my pictures.

Well, according to the CDC, I am nearly obese. At 187 pounds, they will consider me obese. With a 32 inch waist. Makes you wonder if 75% of Americans are really overweight, or if the CDC needs to get a better definition of overweight.

Ive had men say im good for my height and have a nice tight butt. But when I look in the mirror all I can see is a tummy that needs exercising.

The BMI charts are a good start. There are a few exceptions but pretty good for the majority.
One dead give away regarding a person's weight is if they are squishy when they hug you. Clothes can hide a lot, but when they hug you and it all feels so lose and flabby, well, not too likely I am going to want them to do it again.

1.) Your derierre is wider than your television or
2) When I hug you, my arms can't go most of the way around you.
3.) Sagging man breasts. (eww.)
4.) If you eat frosting right out of the container, without cake, probably a good sign you're overweight.

If you are overweight, have skinny friends and order what they order, do what they do. You don't have to like it or gripe about it. Don't eat foods you wouldn't feed a heart patient. If you are quite sure you're very overweight, remember you just have this one life to live, so love yourself and lose weight when you're ready, but don't take too long to get ready. A person should be remembered by what's inside, and everybody loves somebody. If you have pets, they are more likely to be overweight, as well. Try the Purina website to find out how much your little bundle of joy should weigh.

Waist is as big or bigger than chest, unless the woman is flat chested.

Does your skin fold over anywhere on your body when you stand up? (Breasts dont count, unless of course the waist is as big or bigger than the chest)

Crotch of pants are wore out from thighs rubbing together.

You can't latch a seatbelt.

In terms of a dating site...here's how I define the weight classes:

Thin: A man or a woman who is skinny. They're not very toned or muscular, but more just plain skinny.

Athletic: People who are in good athletic shape, but are not skinny. Maybe they're muscular, or maybe they're healthy and just thicker.

Average: People who are slightly overweight and it shows. They may not be huge, but it doesn't look like they exercise regularly or eat right. I know average should really more mean those who aren't thin, aren't fat, but are not athletic...but too many now with way more weight than "average" have used this term for their body class.

A Few Extra Pounds: In terms of dating sites, it's a place for the very large to put themselves to make it sound better when they should say they are Big and Tall or BBW. It's basically the choice for those who are obese and want to make it sound nicer. In the ideal world, this should more mean those who are slightly overweight and it shows, but they aren't very "large". The people who are using "average" as their body class, but they aren't that.

Big & Tall/BBW - Very obese people. Plain and simple.

...When your Waist measurement exceeds tour Hip measurement . . !
I don't mind 'a F E W extra Pounds' . . if it's a _FEW_ . .
Most 'Super-Model' types can have any man that they want . .
{..and there's Very Few _Here_ anyway . . }
What bugs Me, is the definition of 'a Few...' has been stretched to extremes, in many cases . .
If a Lady is 5' 5" tall . . 'a Few' would put her at about 140 lbs. .. ..
...NOT 225...

I have to disagree with NatGoat's assessment of a 5'5" lady having " a few" extra pounds at a weight of 140.

For any woman, the "ideal weight" depends on bone structure and body shape/type. The "ideal weight" is not one figure but a range, usually of about 25 pounds.

At 5' 3- 1/2" tall and having a "petite' frame ( LOL in spite of my big boobs), my healthy weight is anywhere from 115-140 lbs according to my GP . In my case, I'd define " a few extra pounds" as a weight of 140-155. I weighed 117 lbs two years ago and thought I looked great, but it was unsustainable and to maintain that weight I practically starved myself. I try to keep my weight around 125-130 lbs.

IMHO, NatGoat's assessment is based on the societal brainwashing that dictates that women should be stick-thin to be healthy. At the Telus World of Science there's a display that states the AVERAGE North American female is 5'4 and 145 lbs. Using that statistic, his 5'5", 140 lb female would actually be UNDERWEIGHT compared to the norm.

I think a lot of us have forgotten that the women who have been considered to be among the sexiest who ever lived-- Marilyn Monroe (wore a size 14), Jane Russell, Mae West, Rita Hayworth, Raquel Welch, Sophia Loren, Ann-Margret---- all of these women are/were full figured and certainly not stick-thin.

*sigh* The Marilyn Monroe comparison can die now. She was not today's size 14. And they most certainly were NOT "full-figured."

Common boys and girls, think of positives in women with some extra weight...
In general, they have less wrinkles and softer facial expressions. Their bodies are more feminine and cozy, and when you hug them you feel like you are home, you are loved and cared for....

I've never worried so much about the weight, but the health of someone. There are real plus sized women out there who take care of themselves. There are plenty of thin women who starve themselves, are unhealthy, and have no energy. Likewise, there are women who have a few extra pounds, but they take care of themselves pretty well. They have nice skin and a bright personality to match.

A woman's size 14 in Marilyn's day is not the same size as a woman's size 14 today. So people who do wear a size 14 today are telling themselves they're Marilyn Monroe's size, well they're wrong.

I read at her heaviest she was 140lbs, and stood 5'5, more like an 8/10 in today's women sizes. At her lightest, she was 118lbs, most likely a size 4/6 in current sizes.

I hate the american's standard for what is overweight. Let's take two people who are both 5'10" and 220 lbs. The first guy doesn't work out and eats what he wants. He is 30% bodyfat. The second guys works out 5 days a week and watches what he eats and is 10% bodyfat and the majority of his weight is muscle. Well according to american standards both men are overweight, which is just pure crap.

~OT~ I used to think it was an obvious appearance of being non-height/weight proportionate and/or obvious lack of exercise topped off by excess fat. After yesterday, I think I have to rethink that (I was reading a book that gave me a different ideology.) It defines "normal weight obesity" ~ now I have a completely different outlook. I now realize that it's not about just how much fat someone carries around, it's also how much muscle mass is missing. After age 30, we can lose 30% of our muscle mass if we don't stay in reasonably good shape. Overweight to me (now) means: loss of muscle mass, excess fat and an overall out-of-shape appearance. JMO
