| How do you define overweight? Posted: 2/9/2009 4:30:35 PM | I have to disagree with NatGoat's assessment of a 5'5" lady having " a few" extra pounds at a weight of 140. - dirtbag2 I guess it depends on where you are from, but I have to agree, dirtbag2. And one thing many people don't realize is that there is another factor involved & that is age. According to my doctor's charts, a woman 5'6" in her 30s should weight btw 124 - 140 pounds. A woman the same height in her 40s, btw 135 - 150. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
I am 5'10" and weigh 185 pounds. Now, go look at my pictures.
Well, according to the CDC, I am nearly obese. At 187 pounds, they will consider me obese. With a 32 inch waist. Makes you wonder if 75% of Americans are really overweight, or if the CDC needs to get a better definition of overweight. - 1stiamdaddy
That does seem ridiculous. My ex-husband was 6'9" & was told his ideal weight was 195-210 pounds. You looke average, or even slender, in your pictures, IMO.
I read an article in a health-nut magazine last summer (I don't usually take them very seriously), but they said that the adjustments made to various weight & blood pressure "norms" in recent years, were based less on new health research & more on pressure from drug companies.

| How do you define overweight? Posted: 2/9/2009 5:34:28 PM | | I define it the same way I classify it in clinic or on the wards. We use the BMI classifications. >25 is overweight and >30 is obese. There are additional classifications for obesity, but this thread is about being overweight, not obese. Many of the threads I find on POF on weight and obesity don't help sort things out and often indulge denial. I really don't find the jokes and all that funny nor do I find pleasure in seeing comments expressing pride in being fat, but then again, part of my job is to take the obesity problem seriously. Dating sites do not have the same set standard, so we end up having 7 page threads trying to figure out why somebody selected average when they were clearly overweight. The flaw in the BMI calculation related to working out and body fat percentage is simply not enough to blow the standard out of the water either. If you are the exception, the patient note I write will include that information. Take your weight seriously and do what you can to live a healthy life. If you are honest and happy with yourself and have tried your best to lose weight, that's that. If you haven't...well, questions still remain don't they? How you look is a completely different question. | |

| How do you define overweight? Posted: 2/13/2009 8:19:15 PM | hmmm..yes i did suspect the lowered scales for everything had at least something to do with pressure from the drug companies, especially statins, blood pressure medicine, and even diabetes. i know once i've checked my blood sugar when it crashed and it was 73, long ago. now the normal scale starts about 70??? i would be nearly passed out at that level. i've learned to stabilize it through the years with foods that are now called low glycemic. now i'm trying to lose excess weight and trying to identify if too much insulin is still having an effect. as for cholesterol, it's not even the cholesterol that really is bad, apparently; it's the inflammation behind the cholesterol, and your brain needs a certain amount of cholesterol and your veins for flexibility. and people with alzheimers have been treated with a high fat diet. so, i'm not sure that i want my cholesterol to be as low as they say. | |

| How do you define overweight? Posted: 6/14/2009 11:08:30 PM | There are so many different ways to define the term "fat" chubby, chunky, obese, flabby, big, whale like, thats a huge b*tch..lol, huge, etc etc
I think that if you can't see your pubic hair or at least the area where it would be..your overweight... If you can't reach your toes..your over weight....
Personly i would class myself as cuddly...lol

It's all about how you feel about yourself and the overall health that you are in.

There are real plus sized women out there who take care of themselves. There are plenty of thin women who starve themselves, are unhealthy, and have no energy. Likewise, there are women who have a few extra pounds, but they take care of themselves pretty well. They have nice skin and a bright personality to match. He's right. Fitness has to do with overall lifestyle. I've known a lot of women who are thin, but they don't exercise and don't eat a healthful diet--many smoke a lot, many are fairly heavy drinkers, others eat very little, depriving themselves of a really healthy diet. When they never exercise, they may be thin, but they have no muscles and no toning. So, weight is not the be all and end all of what is healthy and fit. Also, if anyone smokes a lot, drinks a lot, and either does too much tanning or doesn't get enough sun, their skin will suffer. So, a balance seems more reasonable to me. Weighing and measuring people is ridiculous. Look at how someone lives, their lifestyle, their energy level, how bright their eyes are, if they move slowly and heavily or if they move with energy and a spring in their step, if they have clear skin and 'rosy' cheeks, etc.

Agreed, BMI is practically useless as it does only take height and weight into consideration.
At 5'7 and 185 lbs my BMI is 29. According to the chart, 29 is overweight. Additionally, a score of 30 means you are obese. I am at the gym 5 - 6 days a week alternating lifting and cardio. I eat a clean and healthy diet and at best I may have 5 lbs to lose. No one that looks at me would ever consider me overweight, much less obese. My Ex recently complained to my Son that i was looking to skinny.
BMI is a useless tool. For it to have any kind of validity factors such as body type and age would need to be factored in.
The concept of proportionate is what really needs to be explored. If we look at ourselves honestly we know if our bodies are height/weight proportionate. We know when we have put on weight. We know when our pants start to fit a little more snug......and no, it is not because they just came out of the drier.
Too many people are fooling themselves when they will not admit they are overweight and they are only hurting themselves. Call your body what ever type you wish, but put a body revealing picture on your profile and i will decide for myself. Then, if you lied or were so self-deluded, I will probably pass you by as I would always wonder what else you were lying and deluded about if you would lie about something so obvious.

| How do you define overweight? Posted: 6/15/2009 4:14:41 PM | Cynical: no way you are overweight according to your pics. But as far as I know- BMI is all we have; & just a tool; ballpark I suppose. I am overweight- have "few#over" on my profile did not know what else to put. My idea of BBW is well over 200#- & I am well under. Also have full body pic. I think I look good & am working on looking better! Actually I was never "thin enough" when I was younger ; family was pretty hard on me yet sabotaged my efforts; am surprised I did not have an eating disorder. It took a lot of yrs to be comfortable with the way I am built- big hips; big chest .. now I feel confident & beautiful. I want to lose weight for me- diabetes & heart disease runs in the family.. & the weight is harder to come off the older you get. Some guy told me on another post I was obese & went on & on- his BMI is 33 - he told his height & weight; but said he was not fat; did not look his age etc etc. Looking for a slim gal of course. Rather rude remarks I think.
You are correct, how you are built & carry your weight may make you look much different than someone else . Nobody is ever gonna agree on this one

When you can look at me at tell me that I am obese then BMI will be a viable measurement.
BMI only correlates height/weight and does not take muscle mass into consideration. It is flawed and a worthless measurement for many people.
It has nothing to do with not wanting to use BMI. It is very clear simply by looking at me that I am not obese or anything close to it. Yet my BMI of 29 puts me one point away from being considered obese. Therefore, for me, and my body type, it is a meaningless and useless measurement.

| How do you define overweight? Posted: 6/16/2009 5:28:40 AM | BMI Charts are worthless. They used to be just a *guideline* Now they are rarely spoken of in the fitness world at all.
Tom cruise, Hugh Jackman, Johnny Depp, Arnold Schwaranegger ( when he was fit ) Tony Romo -- All considered overweight by the BMI calculations.
BMI only looks at height and weight. The scale does not differentiate between muscle and fat in that total weight.
shortblonde mentioned she is a nurse, her office uses them, therefore she knows. Unfortunatly thats doesnt mean much. My own doctors office is no longer using BMI charts as they are wholly inaccurate in determining a persons health status.
The BMI chart was started in the 1800's. Tweeked a few times in the 1950's and 1970's but didnt get much better. Its still not even remotely accurate in determining a persons health.
