| So where were YOU when man first walked on the moon? Posted: 12/15/2007 4:10:35 AM | I think at that time I was living in DC watching Speed Racer and listenning to my conservative military ole man griping about all the hippies...and perhaps bugging my mom to make me an applebutter sandwhich.
By 72 though I wanted to be an astronaut and religiously watched anything having to do with the Apollo missions.

He said, "This might be the most important thing you'll ever see and g*dd*mnit, you're going to see it." So I watched, and I remembered.

I was a huge fan of the space program, and probably saw every launch televised since Mercury. We even watched one (John Glenn) I think, in our elementry school gym.
During the Apollo years, I'd cut classes to go listen to the coverage. I made models of all the various spacecraft, and even had a 1/32 scale Apollo rocket (a pretty impressive model) constructed.
I even had this large National Geographic moon globe, and could point out all the main areas of the landings to anyone bored enough to actually listen.
I could have probably gone on air as a "technical expert" in those days.
I remember us watching it all, simply amazed at what we were seeing. When it ended, I remember taking a walk with my dog, and just stopping and looking up at the moon - still amazed humans were on it as I looked up into the night time sky.
One of those "once in a lifetime" moments, I guess.
Years later ( in 1980) , on a visit to Florida, I managed to JUST miss the deadline to visit Cape Canaveral/Kennedy by something like five minutes. GRRRRR... I just parked the car, and looked over at the gantry areas....and just thought of the good old days.
Later, we walked around Cocoa Beach....
Those were the days, indeed.

I had a small reflector telescope I'd gotten for Christmas the year before and I took it outside that night and looked at the Moon. I wondered if it were possible to glimpse the reflection of the Command Module orbiting the Moon.

| So where were YOU when man first walked on the moon? Posted: 12/23/2007 3:39:55 PM | I was 10 years old and in third grade. It was something like 3 am where I lived and I was on the living room floor barely able to keep my eyes open but I knew it was something that I dare not miss. I was awestruck just by the thought of it. Hopefully I will live long enough to witness the first Mars landing. | |

I think I got pissed that it was taking them so long to leave the lander. I wanted to go to bed but NOOO, they had to take their sweet time as if I had nothing better to do.

How it was promoted by NASA as the drink for the Apollo Missions. How many of you got your mom to buy Tang because of the commercials? Mom did buy it a couple of times.
