| IS it me or should HIP HOP be DEAD YET? Posted: 9/5/2009 10:22:51 PM |
Note about musicianship: one of my favorite weekly jam sessions to attend was 'the Jazz jam' where the Jazz college students would jam with some the teachers and other jazzbos one older gentleman would come up and do beat poetry over jazz/hiphop groove played by a real backing band................AND they were 'killin it'...........awesome
Yup, the more you know, the less affected by ignorance you are in the finding/avoiding of good/bad music..
If you ever get to meet a DJ with killer scratching skills, you'll even change your mind about turntables, trust me.
...they need records to do it... Not 100% true, most of the vinyl that skilled DJs use is just guide pressings, ...used to manipulate samples, and many DJs create their own samples, or collaborate with musicians to create source material, ...it's fecking fun for guitarists if you like huge grooves. Dood, some of these guys have killer chops in their own right, seriously.
.I am just glad that people have some spare time to make ANY kind of music Amen brotha' G.

Acid Jazz and House, are examples of other derivatives where there are a lot of traditional instruments used. Like any music genre, the better examples of musicality and originality are found in the more obscure artists as opposed to the pop ones.

If you want to find some really good Hip-Hop you have to actually search for it. The one hip hop artist that I can actually listen to that's newer is P.O.S. Mostly because of his more heartfelt lyrics and his ability to not say the N word and talk about banging hoes or drinking crunk juice. Seriously, is that all rappers do?

The stuff you hear on the mainstream is awful, just terrible. But there's still good stuff being made. The Detroit scene with people like Black Milk and Royce Da 5'9 is thriving.
And there is still awesome stuff being released by well known artists.. Only Built For Cuban Linx 2 anyone?!?!?!?!

To decide the worth of any artistic expression would be detrimental to the purpose of art as a whole. Although I can't agree with every phrase that comes from Eminem's or Jay-Z's mouth, it's doubtful that I could agree with everything Lynard Skynard, Johnny Cash, Buju Bonton, or the Avett Brothers have or have had to say either....(or the manner in which they chose to present it)...makes about as much sense as deciding which human beings are 'worthy' of being given the right to speak...and unless you can say that you make rhymes flow so smoothly, I would guess that what they do could also be considered a talent....otherwise we could all do it...the picture that they paint is of a lifestyle or a life, even.... Just because it isn't one you're familiar with doesn't make it any easier to put thoughts out on the table in a way that can grab a reader or listener........and the beats ...don't get me started on the beats..lol....rhythm too, is something that not all are gifted with...so I would say that that helps hip-hop qualify as a talent as well..

| IS it me or should HIP HOP be DEAD YET? Posted: 10/6/2009 10:07:58 AM | | Uh, all you people saying DiScO died must be on crack rock. DiScO will never die, and the echoes are heard through out a lot of music and different types of music still today. As for Hiphop, well it has become very stale over the past 5 years. They really need to figure something out.. I always have to go back to old school jams from the 80s, 90s, and early 2ks to really enjoy hiphop. Some good stuff is sprinkled out here and there today, but it is sparse. I do fear its demise because these new 'formulas' are not working very well. | |

| IS it me or should HIP HOP be DEAD YET? Posted: 10/13/2009 2:23:48 PM | | If anything, it'll go back underground. But thats no completely likel considering the industry will milk the hell out of it as long as there is a demographic around to support it. Hip Hop is and always has been a youth movement, but as it stands now needs be more balanced. Like I said, the industry will push anything that can and will make money no matter how much I cant stand Soulja Boy. For me, the underground, independent hip hop is where its at. so in both respects, no its not going away. And like I told a friend of mine; If you dont like it, its just not for you. Support the music that you do like. | |
