| GAS PRICES!!! Posted: 8/18/2005 10:01:47 AM | Lol ^ brilliant! You hear this logic all the time. People send around emails trying to get everyone to “not buy gas tomorrow.” This tiny decrease in purchase would have no effect. It would just mean, that many more people would buy gas the next day.
I repeat. Get a bike. | |

| GAS PRICES!!! Posted: 8/18/2005 1:09:51 PM | I'm very much afraid a "bike" is not the answer...not here. Maybe cars should be outlawed in the city...except for taxis and public transport, emergency vehicles. Then we'd see a big change, not only in the environment, but the habits of people in general. No more going 20+ kilometers to go shopping...they'd use the places closer to home...the little "mom and pop" places....boosts the economy locally, and makes the whole a cleaner place to live. Here, we need a vehicle. 20 klicks to the store...on a bike? In winter? That isn't going to happen.
Taxes on fuel is way too high...most are hidden taxes. I say tax the politicians with pay cuts....same percentages they inflict on the regular Canuck, they get off their pays, with NO increases in their pays unless it is allowed by the public via a referendum. Want to see how fast the tax cuts come?hehehe....

| GAS PRICES!!! Posted: 8/18/2005 1:40:41 PM | Certainly it is not THE solution. But it is one of many components to the solution. I live in the city. I am less then 3 miles from my work. I am not 20 klicks from the store. I’m 1 klick from about 20 stores. I realize not everyone is in this situation. And no I don’t plan to ride my bike all throughout the winter. But I take pride in leaving my car in the garage for as many days in a row as I can.
Not everyone would be able to ride their bike everywhere. But a lot of people could replace a LOT of their driving with biking, if they wanted to. I’ve probably replaced 60% of my driving with biking.
I know one lovely Canadian former POF girl who NEVER even learned to drive. And she’s a single mother. She either walks or rides her bike everywhere. Needless to say, I fell for her rather quickly.

| GAS PRICES!!! Posted: 8/18/2005 2:32:51 PM | Just look at Holland for an example. My "sis" sent me a picture of a bike "parking lot" near the main Amsterdam train station.
Imagine a parking lot for cars, those multi-level ones, a large one.
Now imagine it FILLED to overflowing with bikes, and I mean so many bikes you can't even imagine that many in one spot. It was like "Bikestock" .
It was " normal" for her, and she took the picture because she thought it might not be for us in Canada. When I recieved the picture on my computer - I was stunned.
Trains there are used most of the time for city to city access. They work well, are efficient, and they even have special areas of the train to hold your bike while you travel.
Most of the people I know in Holland are biking probably 10-20 km's minimum a day - rain or shine. I think that is just wonderful - and healthy.

| GAS PRICES!!! Posted: 8/18/2005 2:45:13 PM | | Maybe gas pricing should be more tied with population density....more people in one area, the higher the price...leaving the rural areas, where gas is almost a necessity, at a more realistic price. Jobs pay way less out here, maybe we should be paying out less.... | |

| Deisel not hybird Posted: 8/18/2005 3:41:35 PM | | I my opinion is that sould produce more diesel cars. They last way longer the engines are mch more durable than gas engines, better milliage, less emission sensors, very little maintance, and todays deisel run much smother and quicker than those of years ago. Forget about the hybird cars. As for hybirds cars. hardly anyone know how to maintain them, expensive part, and to manufacure the batteries and sensors for those car are toxic and cause more pullution. Is like saving somethind bit in order to save something something else has to be destroyed. Dis you know that, say for instance, One gallon of crude oil you can produce 2 gallons of gas and 4 over 4 gallons of deisel. Deisel is the way to go, not hybird. | |

| Deisel not hybird Posted: 8/18/2005 3:56:04 PM | | ummm...you can't make 4 gallons, nor even two of any fuel out of one gallon of crude.....that's like saying I van make 4 cups of Koolaid out of one cup of water....the figures don't add up. | |

| Deisel not hybird Posted: 8/18/2005 6:09:48 PM | Diesels are not the answer either . I am a mechanic . Maintenence on diesel engines is about 4x as expensive as gas engines . There are also just as many emissions sensors as gas . As for durability , I can agree that a diesel may last longer , but I've seen gas vehicles with over 700,000 km on them . My Firefly has almost 500,000 . It is all to do with how you take care of them .
Gas here is $1.05.9 per litre . ($3.47us/us gal)
Diesel is 99.9 cents/litre . ($3.28us/us gal)
On an average of 60l fill (or 15 gal) you would save approx. $2.85us . Big deal . Not worth the inflated price of diesel vehicles . You would probably burn the extra fuel waiting for the diesel to warm up .
The only benefit to a diesel is fewer harmful emissions .

| Deisel not hybird Posted: 8/18/2005 9:32:17 PM | | Other countries thrive on a bicycle culture. We need to go back to bicycles. My city is not designed for safe bicycle transport. Cities need to start planning for it. We have to reduce our dependence on oil. Plus it is much healthier than riding five blocks in your car to go to the corner MacDonald's. | |

| Deisel not hybird Posted: 8/19/2005 10:00:43 AM | | I am not sure if I said this or not, but I have a v8 Explorer and it now takes $60us to fill, whereas about a year ago it took around $20 to fill. I do this 3 times a week due to my job and the appointments I make all around town. That comes out of my pocket, an extra $6,240 a year that I will ever see again at TODAYS price of $2.70us a gallon. | |
|
| Deisel not hybird Posted: 8/19/2005 10:15:27 AM | That is why I am really happy right now to not have a car, and rely on mass transit, my bicycle, taxis, and renting a car on weekend's when I need to.
MY office is a five minute walk away from my apartment, and I can walk to stores that provide everything I need.
I refer to it as " Fighting the Wahabi warmongers through direct political action "
More money in my pocket for dates too. ( hint...hint...)

Dallas At what point is it cheaper for Texans to soley rely on oil/gas produced in your own state?

| Deisel not hybird i say bike Posted: 8/19/2005 2:38:15 PM | | I'm all for hybrid/electric cars. Bikes? Works in Europe but it's just not possible in cities like L.A. or here in Canada where its winter 8months out of the year. | |

| Deisel not hybird i say bike Posted: 8/19/2005 3:41:42 PM | | Did you know that back in the 1930s' 40's 50s and 60s Big cars manufacturs broght most of the public transportation especially those owned by private cmpanies. After buying them ,they shut them down and did nothing. Why they did that? Easy, lack of public transportation forces people to buy cars. And it worked!!!!!! | |

| GAS PRICES!!! Posted: 8/19/2005 8:49:22 PM | $1.10 here as of yesterday....still below a buck in the capital though...the powers that be would never stand for pricing like that in THEIR area.
I see my wages are not going up near as fast as the cost of living is....guess that means we'll be holding out for big raises come the time to negotiate the new contract...but knowing this small p-poor union, we'll get screwed over good again.
