I read your post about diesel engines. Have you ever worked on a diesel powered vehicle that ran on biodiesel fuel instead of petroleum diesel? If you have, what can you tell us about the performance of one fuel versus the other, and the pros and cons from your perspective?

Makes the price a little less painful.

| GAS PRICES!!! Posted: 8/21/2005 2:37:14 PM | Get it together, producing countries! You need to establish an "anti-OPEC". You need to go nuclear energy. You need to mandate, and enforce, minimum mileage standards. Yeah, W, you too.
Because the producing countries compete for a limited resource (available oil), it is obvious that the supply/demand realities force price at the well upward. The good thing is that efficiency is forced being implemented. The bad is that economies suffer, and the $$$ go to countries that are populated with radical ideologies (er, if you know who I mean).
Just as there is OPEC, there should be an "anti-OPEC", of course with a suitable euphemism, such as "the Energy Efficiency Council". Nuclear energy should be pushed for non-vehicular purposes, and possibly for battery-powered vehicular purposes. Certainly if there were a mandate for better vehicular fuel efficiency, or credits for buying high mileage vehicles, and taxes for buying low-mileage vehicles, that that would go a long ways in the following: - effect oil supply and demand in ways that would lower fuel prices - send less money to the Wahhabi Saudis, Qaddafi, the mullahs, etc. - preserve available reserves for future generations - lower fuel prices = economic health

| GAS PRICES!!! Posted: 8/21/2005 4:17:24 PM | I didn't read the whole thread...
But I paid $1.149/Litre today. I put $10.00 in my tank. Through conversions though, I read that last week Americans were paying $0.849/Litre (Canadian). They are still getting it better than us up here.
Eliminating Gas Tax is the wrong idea...

| GAS PRICES!!! Posted: 8/22/2005 7:05:30 PM | Some firms help workers cope with gas prices
Employers are taking steps to help workers save money on commuting as gas prices climb.
Some are adding programs that encourage employees to save gas money, turning commuting benefits such as car pools into a valuable perk. Others are reaching out to remind workers of programs that are already in place.
About 14% of employers offer transit subsidies and 5% offer car-pooling subsidies, according to a 2005 survey by the Society for Human Resource Management. The U.S. Census Bureau reports that about 12% of employees carpool to work, and 5% take public transportation. Americans on average spend more than 100 hours commuting to work each year, according to a March 2005 analysis. That means the average daily commute to work lasted about 24.3 minutes in 2003.
What some employers are doing:
• Lewis, a global public relations firm, is moving its suburban Newton, Mass., office to Boston so that employees won't have as far to commute.
"We want it to be easier for employees to come to the office, especially with the added cost of fuel," says Steve Capoccia, the office's general manager. "Everyone drives to work in separate cars."
• American Honda Motor is planning a gas-card raffle and social event over lunch for employees who want to meet others interested in carpooling.
Honda is also reminding employees at its Torrance, Calif., headquarters about programs to curb gas costs, including cash incentives for using public transit and reserved parking areas near the building for car-poolers. The cash incentive is based on how many days an employee carpools or how many people are in the car pool.
"I'm getting more people asking for ZIP codes to find fellow commuters who live in their neighborhoods," says Eileen Perez, a relocation manager at Honda.
• The National Aquarium in Baltimore installed a bike rack last month to encourage employees to stop using their cars. They also provide cash incentives for employees who carpool, ride public transit or bike to work. Their program has seen a rise in participation as pump prices have climbed this summer. Ninety employees today carpool, use mass transit or bike, up from 70 workers at the start of the year. The aquarium has about 300 workers.
• Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in July doubled the monthly subsidy it offers employees who participate in a van-pool program to $60 a month from $30.
"We've seen participation double," says Alissa Grzybowski, manager of work-life balance, who says there also has been an increase in all types of alternative commuting. "That's because of gas prices and challenging commutes as the area grows."
• The Regence Group, a health insurance carrier based in Portland, Ore., offers $30 monthly subsidies for employees who use public transportation and van pools. Employees can also pay for ferry, bus or light-rail passes with pretax dollars. There is a designated storage area for bicycles and on-site showers for fitness-center members. Employees can work from home with supervisors' approval.
Carol Blake, a benefits administrator at Regence, says she likes riding the bus to and from work. "It's debriefing time."

| GAS PRICES!!! Posted: 8/23/2005 12:18:27 PM | with higher gas prices, its just a matter of time, but u should realize we in n american have had it good for last few years, having lowest prices of gas compared to rest of world
its just the ignorance that people here have bought their stupid SUVS and trucks, saying its safere then a car, realistically no one needs these items, small cars is what everone needs
and as well, i think it sgood that the prices for gas are high, people rely on their cars too much, and people here in n america are fat cause of that
its time they walked and rode a bike, like the people in amsterdam, its the way to go, wake up and smell the coffee

I suppose if everyone drove a small car that would be alright but they don't. I wouldn't drive a SUV but I'm not driving one of those death traps either to save a few pennies.
