Why is smoking pot a crime?

"Btw.. tobacco is naturally grown and not enhanced at all anymore."

Where did you find these facts? You call the poisons that make up the "natural" cigarette natural? Puleeze. We do have a choice if we want to smoke pot "enhanced" (as in hydro) or natural bush, so don't tell me that it's all chemically enhanced. Really, we can't generalise on how it affects each individual. I do believe that the chemically grown weed is dangerous to health in the long run, but I've been smoking on and off for the past 34 years, and so far I'm not psychotic, I've always held down responsible positions in employment, have raised a, now adult, daughter and have two young boys that I'm raising alone, without falling asleep on the job and letting my vices interfere with the job at hand and am "grown up" enough to separate leisure with business. So,,,,, now that I'm not generalising and pointing the finger, I believe you should also keep your comments in a general forum. Just my opinion.

Sorry, I'll find a site later when I'm not in a rush to get to work, but cigarettes are enhanced and chemicals added all over the place.

Someone above posted 'potheads are saying ____'. Just wanted to say that not all people who smoke do it every day. Some of us potheads smoke once every two or three years. I just think it's wrong to be so closed minded and intolerant about something you have no valid proof destroys any lives.

Huh? the only responses have been relating pot to Tobacco and liquor...... you have not been reading any of this have you!

Check out post # 118 on page 5 then.

Prior to the 1938 Prohibition Framers were encouraged to grow Hemp (You could have your sons exempted from the draft), You could pay your taxes with Hemp seed. The United States got into the War of 1812 against the British after they blocked the Russian sea ports and the US could no longer get their supply of inexpensive hemp.

In its Bulletin 404 the USDA announces that one acre of hemp will produce as much pulp for paper as 4.1 acres of trees and use only 1/4 as much polluting sulfur-based acid chemicals to breakdown the lignin that binds the pulp fibers. The article states that if hemp was used to make paper instead of trees, wood ash could be used instead of sulfur based chemicals to break down the lignin, thus saving our rivers from pollution.

Hemp fabrics have been found in Turkish sites of the late eighth century B.C., and there is a questionable specimen of Hemp in an Egyptian tomb dated between three and four thousand years ago.

The earliest record of the medicinal use of the plant is that of the Chinese emperor-herbalist Shen-Nung who, five thousand years ago, recommended Cannabis for malaria, beriberi, constipation, rheumatic pains, absent-mindedness, and female disorders.

There is more at stake then just a few people getting a buzz.
Hemp has been a part of our culture and economy for thousands of years. Till Dupont saw a it as a threat to their profit margin.

And why shouldn't we relate it to alcohol and tobacco. They're a drug too! They're equally addictive, and they also destroy. Pot doesn't destroy (in my opinion). Don't know why you don't validate the reasoning behind the comparison to these other two drugs; they're legal and destroying our communities worldwide. Are you blind or just totally against pot, then again, you must be a smoker and a drinker.

Everyone should be the master of their own destiny, point and simple. What you do in the privacy of your home should be of no one concern; of course as long as it doesn't affect someone else liberty or security.

I never took "drugs"; yes am a user of other drugs, such as cigarette and booze (women too ,lol), true, that it is a form of hypocrisy to "ban" one type and make billions on others.
IF we where true to our words, beliefs and phylosophy; they will be all banned or all legal.

So is salt, fried food, sugar........Anyone saw the movie "demolition man" and the utopic society? No way!

i dont want sleepy mellow people working for me...

Here's my experinces with hiring people who drink vs. people who smoke pot.I have NEVER had a pot smoker show up stoned or late for work, their drug of choice was kept at home, never on the work site.I have NEVER had a pot head show up hung over, smelling like booze or not able to work to full capacity.I've seen alcoholics come to work hung over, in lousy moods and ready to start a fight.

I'll say one thing about cig smokers vs. pot smokers.I've never had to wait for a pot smoker to finish a joint before I could get them to work and never seen one Jonesing like a nicotine head in need of a cig.

I answered your post earlier without mentioning cigs or booze as have many others,we've been pointing at the obvious political shenanigans that have kept pot illegal.Has nothing to do with health or the welfare of the people. You seem to have missed those arguments as do ALL of the anti pot people.

edmguy must be so enthralled with his own diatribe that he fails to see the multitude of holes in his two cents....
i highly doubt the taxes on cigs and booze (esp. cigs, which the government is trying to obliterate, and doing so would surely cut into their current coffers, but not nearly to the point that hes suggesting...) when our personal, property, and gas taxes are enough Im sure!

And yeah... duh! most weed out there is HOMEGROWN... and as for the chemicals used in hydroponically grown weed....
Do you even know what they are, or how the process works in the first place? Based on your two cents you sure dont! But then again... many of my Island friends (who, btw, come from a country where weed is indigenous and grows on the roadside, and can be dried and rolled without ANY processing. So yeah... just cuz of where YOU are , your geography, and your obvious ignorance to the fact that there is a world out there that is beyond your bubble, doesnt meen that marijuana isnt a natural... weed! Duh!), they dont either, and they smoke the HERB every day! So much misconception/misinformation/nescience out there...

As for being sleepy and/or mellow... maybe so, insomuch as that weed allows me to ALMOSt slow down to normal-people- speed. Even weeded-out...Ive demonstrated time and again that I can move faster than the blink of an eye.
Maybe you should read up on the hashassins... or discover why bruce Lee had a few pounds of undigested hash in his intestines... I bet theyd all disagree that THC makes you slow and mellow, or compromises mental sharpness and acuity.
Also...
I see no correlation between being mellow and non-violent and being counter-productive at work. Again... you assume that everyone smokes weed at the same time, for the same reasons, with the same results.

And if ya wanna preach...
practice!! Im sure (because I have read the ENTIRE thread, thereby doing MY homework on this thread!) that theres more than just the simple argument that weed is better than booze presented here... which, btw, in itself, upon close speculation and careful scrutiny, is in fact a very valid argument.
So maybe you should read up before telling someone to grow up!!

In construction... the potheads work awesome, and the drunks...
are dispicable. So, in keeping with my targets response, and again concurring with taurus (who has singlehanddly smashed any anti-pot lobbyists by at least 10-1 in terms of salient points and arguments, so many in fact that none has risen to counter ALL his points, or even come close...), Id rather have pothead on my crew any day than a lush... I dont have to worry about him falling off scaffolding, stinking like shit, or requesting a drop-off after work at the beer store. And trust me, in my profession, you really can see first hand the difference between potheads... and other substance abusers.

Why is smoking pot a crime?

I just wanted to say that IMO, if the parents are smart, they would be happier to know that the kids are smoking pot instead of drinking.

I consider myself an intelligent parent and I wouldn't be happy knowing my kids did EITHER of the two. Both are illegal for children, one is illegal for adults in most states of the USA, and both are unhealthy in many ways!

Also, they don't get into fights, which we all know alcohol can sometimes induce

The only reason they may not get into fights is they're too stoned to think straight or stand up, much like the drinker who's had too much. If pushed or aggravated they will certainly put up an argument..one that they feel is very very deep, and the listener feels is very very redundant most times!

Working for one of the largest drug and alcohol centers in the state I'll add the following in relation to the question posed by the OP:

Smoking marijuana is illegal in most states in the USA. CHOOSING to break the law only indicates ones poor decision making skills to me, where by they deserve any consequences that may have to be enforced due to their choice! They may be fined, lose their job, their driving privilege and their family. Now why would any responsible adult choose to gamble with those things? Is it really worth it?

Smoking marijuana absolutely affects the thought pattern. To those who smoke and think it enhances their skills, I'd love to video tape them while they're high because unless they actually see themself from a straight perspective, they have no idea! I also find it sad that anyone would want to purposely alter their mind. Aren't they happy with whom they are? If one needs to relax, there are several natural alternatives that aren't illegal.

Smoking marijuana alters judgment and slows the motor skills. I'd never want anyone behind the wheel of a motor vehicle who was under the influence of pot regardless of how well THEY THINK they drive. I'd never want any loved one of mine on the road while someone who smoked pot was driving around them. I'd certainly never trust anyone who was under the influence of ANY drug which includes alcohol, to care for my loved ones. Their reaction time in emergencies is slowed down and the thought process under stress becomes confused. I would never want anyone under the influence to make any important decisions for me or those I care about, especially ones that may result in life or death.

Yes I've heard hundreds of arguments as to the contrary and find it real interesting when in a group session....those around the person who are peers, chime in to say..."Dude/dudette, you've got to be kidding! Have you ever talked to yourself when you're high?" (I'm sure they have!!) lol And why are they here??? Hmmmmmm!!! Because it's affected their lives in a negative way and more than likely the law stepped in, or their health deteriorated.

Quick notes from a few brochures on hand.

Alcohol Abuse: drinking that results in job, social, health or legal problems. Problems can result from a patten of regular drinking or just one instance. People who drink regularly build up a resistance and need more and more each time to experience the same effect. Those addicted who try to stop may suffer severe withdrawal symptoms. Long term heavy drinking is linked to cancer, heart and liver damage. Tolerance, physical and psychological dependence can develop.

Cannabis: may also lead to job, social, health or legal problems. Side effects include confusion, loss of co ordination, tolerance, psychological dependence, damage to lung tissue. This "highway drug" often leads to other drugs for many users.

Cigarettes: for those who asked! Cigarettes contain 1. ammonia (found in toilet bowl cleaner) 2. polonium 210 (nuclear waste) 3. carbon monoxide (car exhaust) 4. acetone (used to remove paint) 5. 38 other known cancer causing chemicals. Smoking kills 434,000 Americans every year more than AIDS, car accidents, alcohol, murders, and fires..all combined! Cigarettes kill one out of three long term users. Nicotine is as addictive as cocaine or heroin. Smoking a pack of cigarettes is like drinking 2 cups of steaming cancer causing chemicals. The original Marlboro Man died of lung cancer!!

Drugs, incl. alcohol, affect the body (and it's processes), the mind (and perception), behavior (and feelings). Drugs can threaten a person's physical and emotional health and social life.

The choice is each and every one of ours! Just because something is legal doesn't make it right, or in our best interest to do/use it. Abusing drugs, or using illegal drugs is not a smart decision and too many people don't know how to drink or smoke pot (where it's legal), responsibly!

Support healthy choices for adults and those they guide. Communication and education are the keys!

**Anyone who wishes more information on the topic may email me. This post was not meant as an attack on anyone but only to provide some quick facts on drugs including alcohol and nicotine. I believe as adults it's "to each their own" and we're all responsible for our own decisions, the consequences they may bring.....as well as for our own well mental and physical health.

I have no clue why it is a crime, I dont think it should be a crime. How many times have you heard of people going to smoke a joint and then going out to kill someone over it. No, leave that to the crackheads. Pay more attention to the crack/cokeheads and leave us potheads alone!

i used to be chronic...

now i can't stand the stuff. the smell of it makes me ill, i've tried a few tokes here and there since then, and i really don't like the high either.

...that being said, there's no reason for it to be illegal. it's simple paranoia and the fear of an outcry for further leglization of other drugs that keeps pot on the illegal list.

if you want a screwed up short-term memory, and lack of motivation...i think you should be able to have it.

This is indeed the title of the post - just 'why is' this the case. You are of course entitled to you opinion but if you read through some of the pages of this brilliant thread you will see there are many reasons why lots of us are debating this exact of view.

I would just like to add in defence of my fellow smokers that we dont all follow the stereotype which you seem to hold unzippedpassion.

too many people don't know how to drink or smoke pot (where it's legal), responsibly!

Nor Drive Responsibly, or raise their children responsibly, or even eat responsibly... so are we going to pass laws, that tell everyone exactly what they can and can not do. So that what is not prohibitive is compulsory?

Side effects include confusion, loss of co ordination, tolerance,

Tolerance! ah we have found the real reason the Right hate pot.... it makes people Tolerant. Image no more gay bashing, no more homeless bashing, no more people being intolerant of others. How would they then divide us?

Has it occured to you that laws are in place for the good of the majority ?
We may not agree with many of them but they are there nontheless...
It's called a civilized society...
Smoke your pot.. just don't get caught with 10 pounds of it in the trunk of your car !

While I'm here ... Don't be thinking that a legalization of pot would ever allow you to purchase it from your friendly neighborhood pusher.... or for that matter , make it legal to grow yourself.

A legalized pot will be strictly regulated and enforced by the Federal Gov't.
Sold in corner stores next to the Camels or Old Ports. (with the tax money going you know where)
If the legalization that you are hoping for ever comes... you can still count on even tougher penalties for selling your own, buying from someone other than approved and stamped and taxed.
I really feel that just hoping for legalization of pot would bring about the same situation as Quebec selling ciggarettes , alcahol and gambling... try selling these things privately !

Originally, prohibition of marijuana (Marihuana Act of 1936) was pushed through Congress by publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst. One of his major assets was pulpwood forests to supply newsprint for his publishing empire. SMOKING of pot was a very rare phenomenon at the time and was primarily spanish workers who brought it in, and Jazz musicians who discovered it's wonderful enhancement effect on creativity.Hearst paid to have those lurid little booklets that portrayed pot smokeers as crazed killers and sex-fiends. His fear was the usefulness of the hemp plant and the fact that it makes an excellent and CHEAP
newsprint would destroy his holdings in pulpwood. The real reason it stays illegal is best exemplified by the most recent figures released on incarceraration rates by the FBI. 44% of ALL arrests made last year were for marijuana...
and the prison population roughly reflects the same percentage. So...... why?........
Prisons....$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Guns.......$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

P.S..... the U.S. has more people incarcerated than China and Russia combined!

Again, had the whole thread been read, you would realize that I and others are of the opinion that the Hemp Prohibition was not for the "good of the majority" but rather to protect the profits of the few.

And you're right, even if decriminalized, you still won't be able to grow it. The Big boys do not care if you smoke it, they are afraid that we would find out how useful it is and stop buying Dupont's crap, stop polluting our water to make paper, and reclaim damaged farm lands. I could go on and on, but it has already been stated... Read the thread and follow the money.

@turnthepages: I have read through all the pages and I see alot of redundant threads on both sides. There's no need for you to defend your fellow smokers to me because if you read my closing statement I told everyone what I believe..and that's to each their own!!

I also have loved ones in my life who smoke and I wouldn't trade them for the world! Do I wish they'd stop? Yes! Without a doubt! Do I think they make poor choices as they purposely choose to break the law? Of course I do because I know the consequences of breaking the law, and the outcome from the harmful effects of the drug. My thread was educational and filled with facts to support the title of the thread...which is "why is smoking pot a crime?". It's your decision what you choose to do.
As for the stereotype I seem to hold, perhaps you'd like to explain that to me in a personal email because as long as you continue to ASSUme you know me, I may have to continue to prove you wrong! All emails are always welcome! : )

Nor Drive Responsibly, or raise their children responsibly, or even eat responsibly... so are we going to pass laws, that tell everyone exactly what they can and can not do. So that what is not prohibitive is compulsory?

There are already laws in place to protect the innocent especially when it comes to not driving responsibly and not raising our children responsibly so I don't know why you'd even make a statement like that. Also, those things don't ALTER the mind, and your thought process which could affect your good decision making skills during emergencies or other times you may need to use them.

Tolerance! ah we have found the real reason the Right hate pot.... it makes people Tolerant.
That was loss of communication, tolerance...as in LOSS of tolerance also!

The stereotype which I presume you support is below - in your own words.,

(/The only reason they may not get into fights is they're too stoned to think straight or stand up, much like the drinker who's had too much. If pushed or aggravated they will certainly put up an argument..one that they feel is very very deep, and the listener feels is very very redundant most times!)

Sorry if you are not happy with this but I, and I'm sure a lot of others, found this, to say the least, extremely insulting. That pot heads dont get into fights because they're too stoned to think straight is one hell of a supposition and insult.

I'm not about to launch into a list of my achievements in life, suffice it to say they are not scant. I have amazing conversations with people, from Lord Mayors to the unfortunates selling the Big Issue on street corners, people often seek my opinions, and value them, in both personal and professsional capacities.

Defamation of character is not only unhelpful but demeaning to yourself.

Yes, its an illegal act, what we are seeking the answers to, I reiterrate, is exactly 'why this is so'.

Here in England new laws have dictated that consumption in private is permissible and up to 4 oz or 500 joints worth is the limit. That these changes have occured at the same time as tightening up on the tobacco laws with the resultant effects on tax, lead me to believe that once the bru ha ha dies down, there will be further relaxation of the pot laws and taxes imposed., that pot became illegal with the advent of synthetic fibres and deforrestation of half the world for the newspaper industry - these are the kind of issues being debated here - rather than if or not pot heads can hold meaningful conversations. That is a foregone conclusion.

If I have made any spelling mistakes please let me know - lots of pot heads dont even have to use spell check either.

I dont care...
about the politics, the health issues (or lack thereof), the fact that its presently illegal to smoke weed, adverse effects, whether they be short-term or long term, or any of the other bullshit, especially that of the anti-pot crowd. And I have my reasons. First and foremost, we live in a Liberal day and age, I say it time and time again in threads...chacun son gout! Like the old show said...the world dont move to the beat of just one drum, what might be right for you... might not be right for some. Its all about...the difference that make us all unique in one wy or the other, and we should look beyond such vices at look into the heart of the individual. Same rules apply... for religion and sexual orientation.
We all have our vices... some you can personally tolerate...others you cant. Secondly... marijuana is NOT a vice or bad habit for me...it really IS medication, and used PRIMARLIY for medicinal purposes. Like my roomate Mike... he understands this all too well... hes suffered from acute migraines from the age of five, and has seen every specialist there is in our area; even the same doctors and clinics I went to. Ive tried feornal, Ive tried perks, T 3s...Excederin migraine (only available in the US , but actually works if its a level 2 or sometimes a level 3 migraine... level five is where theres no tolerance for sound or light, and Im inthe hospital AGAIN gettin a shot of demerol and gravol...in my pretty lil bootie! lol too bad the hospitals dont offer...frequent flyer points, on migraines alone I could fly around the world! lmao!!)), Ive tried torodol with flexerol (mine are often triggered by muscle tension, and NOT due to my diet) where I take 2 torodols (aka lady perks) to one flexerol..and sit around really toasted. Also...flexorol is a muscle relaxer, and, if one has a g/f you might wanna pull out the toys if shes feelin frisky, cuz it can make ..ALL your muscles want to relax. Ive tried imitrex as well... and all these prescribed pills suck. They make you truly lethargic and dopey... and totally non productive. And Mike... totally understands... cuz he suffers from the same ailments I do, except hes worse... he cant even work or go to school consistently, and is probably gonna have to live on disability, which sucks for him, cuz hes a good guy who LIKES to work. Now ...weed is totally different. First, it almost IMMEDIATELY has an effect, that I can literally feel the effects of almost immediately...releiving the tension, making the migraine settle down to a level one..or even all the way down to a regular headach...sometimes, if i catch it early... I can prevent a horrible day. And for me AND my homie/roomie... migraines can last for DAYS... sometimes 4 to 5 days at a time...like when the weathers bad.

I quit cold turkey for my ex-fiancee... no problem. Like Dave Chapelle said in his last line of the movie Half baked..."I love weed, but I love **** more!" lol
Problem was...I was only 23, and still not used to dealin with my new found headaches. The pain, despite the feornals i wa taking...made me rather surly, and I ended up seeing a counsellor, because of my temper, something Ive always had issues with..moreso now that my migraines were taking control of my life..to the point that I really scared myself one night in a bar fight.. where, during a level 2 migraine (my ex dragged me out when I didnt wanna go...) I ended up...breakin a guys neck, and was completely covered in blood... all his (my mom cried that night, for I came home -yeah i was 23 at home... finished all my pen time and subsequent paole and probation, going to u of t..and i actually ripped my varsity jacket in that fight- covered in so much of his blood that it soaked thru my shoes and socks). Now..had i been weeded out..i probably woulda still fought since the guy brung it to me...but i probably wouldnt have gone bonkers and broke his neck. I realized...that its either weed or ridlin, for, even when i dont have a migraine, it..slows me down enough to function in the regular world, and help my temper flare-ups. Not everyone is.."normal" and sometimes need something to help us stay balanced and functional. Also...wed really maintains my appetite, esp. when im havin a migraine. the thing is..i cna sit there and have one rolled...and not smoke it for hours, sometimes even days...its not a prevalent thing that rules my life; its medication taken when i need it. I can and do go for extended peruiods of time, where I FORGET about the need for weed... cuz I aint hurtin, and the weathers good (migraines are often triggered by the weather as well...). However...you could fill a room with weed, and eventually..Ill smoke it all!!

Another note about weed vs. alcohol.... Ive never puked from smokin too much weed, never had the spins, had gut rot, or woke up somewhere and not remember how I got there, nor have I been too out of control to walk talk or function without someones help. Nor has anyone I know die of weed poisioning.

It's a crime because you can't function on the job when you are stoned out of your tree (doctor, heavy machine operator, accountant) - any job where you have to THINK! It's a crime because we have to be regulated as humans. We can't make decisions for ourselves. Seatbelts, alchohol and driving, pictures on packs of cigarettes and on and on. When a nation learns to get stoned at 4:20 pm and 4:20 pm only, we will become a economic power house like other pot smoking countries like.... ummmm... Jamaica. Spread the word...

It's a crime because we have to be regulated as humans. We can't make decisions for ourselves. Seatbelts, alchohol and driving, pictures on packs of cigarettes and on and on. When a nation learns to get stoned at 4:20 and 4:20 only, we will become a power house like other pot smoking countries like.... ummmm... Jamaica.

I had a really relevant comment to make but because of the new rule that I couldn't post more than twice in ten threads (I had to wait a bit), I've forgotten what I was going to say. Must be too much pot!

Why is smoking pot a crime?

The stereotype which I presume you support is below - in your own words.

First of all don't presume anything about me including whom I support. I work and volunteer for many organizations and I support them all. I also care deeply for all people regardless of what their choices are, and whether or not I agree with them. I've already told you that I have loved ones who smoke, and although I wish they wouldn't for all the reasons I stated above, ... I wouldn't trade them for the world.

That disagreement you just posted to what I said, was a response to someone who claimed they DON'T get into fights!!! If you look back you'll see that I quoted the person before putting my response to them. I counsel and work with drug abusers and am certainly aware of all the fights they get into, and why! I also see the devastation it causes many of their lives in one way or another. You are correct that I should have worded it "one" of the reasons they may not get into fights is.......because there are those whose minds turn in other directions when they alter them with drugs. Point was, which if you continued with the sentence you quoted me on.......
If pushed or aggravated they will certainly put up an argument.
If you insist on quoting me, please quote the entire explanation.

Yes, its an illegal act, what we are seeking the answers to, I reiterrate, is exactly 'why this is so'.

I'm sorry if you can't see the answers I posted in my msg. above. There are too many people who abuse the drug and yes, they do that with alcohol too. As I said, just because something is legal doesn't make it good for you. Here are a couple other responses I already gave you as to why it's illegal!!

Smoking marijuana absolutely affects the thought pattern.

Smoking marijuana alters judgment and slows the motor skills.

This makes it very dangerous to drive under the influence and near impossible to make quick important decisions especially in emergency situations. Therefore, no one who is high on any type of drug should be responsible for taking care of another life while they are under the influence.

Cannabis: may also lead to job, social, health or legal problems. Side effects include confusion, loss of co ordination, LOSS of tolerance (for anyone who read that wrong), psychological dependence, damage to lung tissue. This "highway drug" often leads to other drugs for many users.

Drugs, incl. alcohol, affect the body (and it's processes), the mind (and perception), behavior (and feelings). Drugs can threaten a person's physical and emotional health and social life.

I've sadly seen many people whose health was affected in a negative way due to smoking pot. I've also seen many arrested causing all kinds of complications with their personal lives including losing their jobs, hurting relationships and breaking up their families. The cost of pot is extremely expensive and to many who become mentally addicted to it, pot becomes the priority over paying their necessary bills. I'm sure everyone knows what happens then.

As for your achievements, I'm happy for you but this isn't a match. My list is also very long. With that said I'll share with you that I believe the laws are in place for a reason and I'm a responsible adult who would rather try and change something I thought wasn't right, then to purposely break the law for any reason at all.

If I have made any spelling mistakes please let me know - lots of pot heads dont even have to use spell check either.

I have no clue why you felt it was necessary to make a statement like that. I also have no desire to do anything but share and educate through experience for anyone who wishes to read what I have to post!
