What really concerns me is that people on here have been talking about this subject for so long! I have a tattoo and I love it because it means something to me. It marks a passage in my life. I guess my tat will keep superficial jerks away! Who knew?

I don't see my tattoos as "mutilation" and I do love who I am. I have no regrets and my tats mean just as much to me today as they did when I got the first one almost 25 years ago. When I started getting them it wasn't the cool thing to do so I certainly didn't get them just to fit in with any crowd. If anything, it set me apart back then. I've designed them myself and they do have meaning. I like them because it's art.

On the other side of the coin, I can see how the tattoos of the masses aren't as appealing to some. The whole body armor or badly done tats do look crappy to me. It doesn't seem as if much thought is going into what/where/why.

When I'm 90 I expect the tattoos will be a little wrinkled and faded, but the initial intent and purpose will still exist. I don't know if the same can be said for those who go in spur of the moment and pick something off the wall.

Q: "Why don't you all just stop trying to be the judge and jury on ANYONE who wants to get a tattoo?"
A: Because the question was how we feel about the tattoos and what our reactions are.

Eventually those tattoos will be on an old lady. Along the way they will begin to look pretty silly to you, especially when they go out of fashion. Along the way you may also learn how to spell "mischief".

To go off topic somewhat, isnt branding being resurrected again. Heard a short review on the radio recently about this being the 'latest' thing to have done. Now that is scary. IMO.

OT, I would love to have a tattoo but something seems to hold me back. My mum has one on her thigh - a swallow. She's 70 - it looks blurry and the colour is faded but it's part of my mum - was there long before I came along. My sister has a dragon entwined with flowers and leaves starting from the top of her breast going along one side to nearly under her breast. It's quite something. Years ago, she was breastfeeding her second daughter - my daughter saw the tattoo and said 'oh look mummy, she's got a picture for the baby'. There you go, tattoos as entertainment.

Now to decide what I will have and where........

For me it doesn't matter, but for others it may.....The Old Testament law commanded the Israelites, “Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD” (Leviticus 19:28) So I guess the Lord does care, though I don't think he cares if it is a turn on or turn off.

I got a tattoo for my 51st birthday and it's not going to look bad later on in my life unless I lose 50 to 100 lbs. -- and I'm not anywhere near that much overweight.

It means something to me for many reasons. There's two hearts entwined at the top from the song 'Hearts' by Yes that I borrowed some of the lyrics from when my grandfather died and re-joined his wife and lifelong love.

There's three stars below - one big and two small - to symbolize myself and the two children I gave birth to.

And there's a whale in the middle that has all been carefully placed to represent certain elements of my Astrology chart and show I have a good sense of humour -- a middle aged ass with a whale on it is just plain funny to me.

The artist worked very hard to get everything just the way I wanted it -- especially the Astrology part.

I could care less what anyone thinks of it (male or female) because getting one was something on my list of things I'd do if I had no fear and I did it.

I'm enjoying my second childhood and if someone doesn't want to play with me because of it so be it.

I have a flower on my arm and I had wanted a tattoo forever when I got it which was not until my 40's. I thought about what it would be like when I got old and I decided maybe when I get old I will get some fake boobs to go with it. I thought about did I care that a lot of people think it looks like "trailer trash" and I decided no, I don't. My nephews think it is cool which is all that really matters. I grew up seeing tattoos on men and loved looking at them and hearing stories behind some(like war). Then women started getting them more and more so I couldn't resist anymore. I'm happy. Now the crotch thing I wouldn't even let a doctor do.
PS I think a man with tats everywhere is beautiful!

I have 4 tats. They are all pretty decent in size and I don't regret any of them. I only have 1 on my ankle and that the Phillies logo, I'm a loyal fan. I have my daughter's name on my chest with a moon and star. I have a pink hibiscus on my back and above the hubiscus I have my maiden name on my neck

I think tats are a major turn on. Especially when they are on a really sweet guy....gives that bad boy aura with a touch of class. Add an HD to that... then you're really rollin'...

On a girl? Depends on the guy but if she's like me then she could really care less what he thinks....tats are permanent....big decision.

Hey Dutch Girl

I totally agree with you.. I designed two tattoo's myself and they are my childrens name . The pictures depict the meanings of their names which I chose lovingly and carefully. They are on the inside of each wrist ..they are by far from gawdy and my kids are proud of them because they know the love and commitment I have is permanent for them. So if any bloke came along and judged me because of them , he is obviously not worth my time.. People are far too judgemental over things that dont really concern them..

I agree with boit,I don't mind them on woman. Weither its on a man or a woman,I think it just depends on the persons thoughts on tattoos.Myself I love art,I think of the human body as a peice of canvas and putting tats on bodies is such a beautiful form of atistic artwork.I think they are great.I think tats on woman are a turn on for me as long as its not to bigor covering up 50% of their body] .

Even a broken clock is wrong twice a day, as it goes to show when Nashville talk show host Phil Valentine on the radio said something to the effect of, "if you're ugly, the tattoo isn't going to make you look attractive, and if you look hot already, you don't need them." A rare moment of sound argument from him.

I find them a complete turn off. I think the human body is beautiful and to add a tattoo just ruins it for me. I would much rather be with a woman with no tattoos or strange piercings. To me, if you love who you are, you don't have any desire to permanently mutilate yourself. But leather and lace is hot. If you want some art to show a passage in life, put it on canvas and hang it on the wall where everyone can see it.

Nothing I think is sexier then well placed ink on a woman. It shows me her independence, and she isn't afraid of what others thinks. Women with ink, a big thumbs up.

it takes pride and conviction to permanently adorn your body with art. That type of devotion is a total turn on in and of itself. Then it is a matter of wear the peices are and what the peices are. the beter the art the bigger my turn on. What can I say I have tattoos. I dated a woman with the Chakras tattoed in the aproriate spots and Indian goddesses on her back and egyptian sleaves.
