| Artists are weird Posted: 12/8/2005 7:07:11 AM | | Artists are weird! I haven't heard that one before!! LOL (just kidding)! Well I’m an artist and I consider myself "weird" I guess. I don’t think so much that it’s a factor of being weird or not, we just march to a beat of a different drum! Sometimes I find being an artist not only a blessing...but a curse! I’m a college student and catch myself wondering off into artist mode when I’m supposed to be focusing on my instructor. Artists are weird but there is a difference between being a suicidal mess, the world hates me and nobody loves me psycho artists, rather than just a deep individual type artist! I’m so tired of being stereotyped as a crazy artist! I consider myself very normal....no different then most except the way I look at things! I guess its hard to distinguish what is weird and what is normal! ;) | |

| Artists are weird Posted: 12/9/2005 3:33:02 PM | sitting in a dirty spoon diner and being completely enrapturted by the energy and color combinations presented there and then trying to describe it over my sugar filled cup of coffee to a friend...
i've done that...i have a short story about a guy and i haven't finnished it yet...i've left him sitting in a diner for lik, 5 years...i should let him out to explore the rest of the city i've created for him...
diners for me are a place of wonder...anything can happen in them...
they are great settings for stories...a story can start in one and end on one...
"toms diner" is a great song...
artists are weird...
and proud of...embrace your strangeness...

| Artists are weird Posted: 12/9/2005 3:48:01 PM | ahhh...diners. About a hundred years ago, before becoming the Evil Gothic Doll Maker Of South Carolina, I was a diner cook for 9 years...nightshift.
The things I've seen....

| Artists are weird Posted: 12/9/2005 7:56:30 PM | | So artists are weird? Everything is weird! If you don't believe me just take a look out the window. Ah don't bother, you know what I'm talking about. If somebody can come up with a rational explanation for that then I'm all ears =:) | |

| Artists are weird Posted: 12/9/2005 9:04:46 PM | has anyone any advice i could use? i'm a musician, artist, writer , blah, been on my own with my son (who's 5) for 3 years now.i still can't find my niche in life. i see a challenge, and in my mind , i review and solve it withiout even touching it . to me, it then seems quite pointless in continuing on that path cause it's like i've already achieved it. does that make sense? so i find myself very frustrated ,cause,it's like why even try something new ,cause i know i could do it better than anyone .i feel like a genius, yet i know i'm not is this maybe bi-polar behaviour? | |

| Artists are weird Posted: 12/9/2005 9:25:00 PM | Bro' ........
When I was five, I told my mother, "I want to be a musician when I grow up".
She laughed, and said, "Honey, you can't do both".
I played in a bar for the first time when I was 12, I've been playing since I was 5
I'm 43, I have a 7 year old daughter, and my divorce precedings start on Monday. I am a studio musician, a teacher, a live player, an arranger/composer, ..... I am on CD's and have played in front of thousands...
I still don't know what the hell it's all about.
I hope in a way, that I don't find out, .....cause I think that means you're dead.
I have noticed one thing though, the more "true" to your craft you are? The more personally rewarding it is, even if it starves you, and makes you have to take "day-gigs" to survive.
I will always be a musician, but the chances of making a decent living?
Hah!
So I'm going back to school to learn another way of taking my slice o' the pie.
Challenges?
They are there, within you..... if you look they will drive you mad, ...that can be a good thing, ...if you meet them head on.
When ever I feel like there's nothing to challenge me, musically?
I listen to Charlie Parker's rendition of Diz's, "A Night In Tunisia" .... Dial sessions '53, and I'm humbled anew.

| Artists are weird Posted: 12/16/2005 6:37:27 PM | | I wish I had the time to read all the responses to this post because I think it's a very important topic. I personally don't think that artists are wierd enough, at least not anymore. We've started getting used to recognizing pre-packaged styles and personalities as wierd and have taken a blind comfort in promoting them. We live in a time that is not condusive to the traditional role of artistic rebellion. For art to truly benefit from the perception of being weird, it has to be eaten up and disseminated in a familiar media environment that people aren't threatened or intimidated by. To actually be weird means that an artist is probably committing her/himself to obscurity, and ultimately insignificance. It's the double-edged sword that faces all creative minds with a sense of integrity - balancing an authentic and truly controversial message with the means of being able to disseminate it in a broad enough environment where it can can have an effect. Weird is only as important as the scope of its ability to corrupt! | |

| Artists are weird Posted: 12/17/2005 12:19:34 AM | To be able to look at something and SEE so much more than others do
Then to be able to get them to SEE the same thing, even if only briefly
To know that your words/art/music/sculpture has opened someones heart, or struck a chord with them
What can be better than that
That is the type of weird I enjoy .. .

| Artists are weird Posted: 12/18/2005 1:48:54 AM | I have to say I love being "weird" and always have... It takes a certain talent to do that, you know>?~~~~~ | |
|
| Artists are weird Posted: 12/18/2005 2:56:06 AM | I'm definately off the wall........in all honesty though, if I wasn't I wouldn't be able to paint the things I do. I just think us "artists" are more in tune with our emotions, and thoughts, most people aren't. So I think that makes us "special" no? In anycase definately good thing to be wierd! | |
|
| Artists are weird Posted: 12/18/2005 1:57:26 PM | I'm not even an artist, although I could have been.... I think it's just a total mind-set, and it's definately not for everyone... And, again, I can't believe my parents still don't "get" me after this many years... | |
|
| Artists are weird Posted: 12/18/2005 4:06:12 PM | | I do that to while walking down the street admiring the clouds , totally in my thoughts & unaware of my surroundings for a little bit lol. But also at night when im out for a walk ,im always looking up at the stars most of the time. | |

| Artists are weird Posted: 12/18/2005 6:46:29 PM | I have a good energetic/intuitive sense, so this is more focused in that area.
Anyone can make art, but there are people who seem to be "wired" specifically for creativity - that is, creating something new and bringing it to the world. They seem to have more "channels" of input going on. Like bringing in something from another world on one channel, then there's some for the emotional resonance of the creation, something on the backburner, etc. There's often a feeling of being "spacey" sometimes for them, but it is so integral to the process of creation, so it's not necessarily a bad thing.
Mind you, I don't really separate someone bringing in something new to paintings or music to something like a relationship or even in a corporation. It's all related.
Flaky enough for you all? ;-)

| Artists are weird Posted: 12/18/2005 7:37:22 PM | Yes, weird enough carrot~~ I wish I could have explained myself as well.... I've always drawn ((was going to be a cartoonist)), and also played piano and guitar, but I got sidetracked... (Must have been while I was looking at the clouds)...
I just think some people are much "different" than others, and that's what makes life so interesting...

| Artists are weird Posted: 12/20/2005 8:34:08 PM | I'm a graphic designer, so there are times when my friends get kinda weirded out by the things I notice. An example of this was last weekend when me and my friend were picking someone up from the airport.
Looking at the signs "Why are all the signs in italics, that can't be easier to read.....I wonder what font they're using, looks like Helvetica, but I'm not sure."
The Dept/Arrival displays "why the hell do they shrink the logos to a pixelated mess like that? I can't even tell this logo says "Alaskan Airlines"...what if I was a foreigner here, I'd never figure out what that says"
I found myself fawning over the logo for the airport as well, as it seemed to be the only thing in the whole place that was decently designed.

| Artists are weird Posted: 12/20/2005 8:47:28 PM | You're even more weird than I am kurisub~~ I"m just kidding, of course... I will and always have, respected any kind of artist.... | |
|
| Artists are weird Posted: 12/21/2005 10:20:07 PM | I do font guessing too kurisub.
I've done some graphic and webpage design so I'm always conscious because of the work I've put into my own stuff. I am pretty amazed at some of the graphic design that goes into advertising. Where do they come up with all the stuff!!

If your really republican you might think anything outside of your dogmatic philosphy is wierd. If your a psychopathic anarchist there probably isn't a whole lot that would freak you out, maybe except some sort of rigid dogma. As a strong believer in personal and social progress I find negativism as being wierd. Let's put the past behind us and move forward. Brave new world, QUEST INTO THE UNKNOWN, that's where the action is.
