Severe depression, social phobia, general anxiety... and although I haven't been diagnosed with it--I know I have OCD.

Landed Social Anxiety Disorder myself as well as depression...I also ended up becoming epileptic after becoming addict to some prescription drugs back in highschool (lessons learned the hard way) so I've had to deal with that for close to 7 years now..

I am almost totally deaf in my left ear. Within the next 1-2 years I will lose all hearing in that ear.. hopefully I don't have bi-lateral Meniere's disease because that will take away the hearing in the other ear.. unfortunatley I wont know about that until another 5 yrs once it has had a chance to progress..

I havent caught much flack from it.. but I can tell some people do get impatient with me when I have to ask them to repeat themselves. The don't know at the time.

Funny story, I was in Sobey's and they had these new self check outs, so I was there with my mom and I wanted to try the new check out.. so there I am ringing in my food.. and I go to swipe my card but I didnt know I had it the wrong way, so I kept doing it, the lady who watches all the check outs was telling me to turn the card around, but she was standing on my left side so I didnt hear her, she kept telling me but getting louder.. so finally my mom whispers to her while pointing to her left ear that she can't hear well... the lady comes up to me face to face and starts to speak loud and slow as if I was dumb.. I said thank you, I hear just fine if you talk softer and to me.. the lady felt bad and said sorry..

Not Otosclerosis?
I personally know someone who had an operation to resolve this and it is working, rebuild and used an artificial implant (I call her my bionic ear) since I have lost from diving and the military

Yep got a disability but its only because of society's label. I am in a wheelchair from the result of falling from a deer hunting treestand but I don't consider myself disabled, just challenged a little more now. I still do all the things I used to do before my injury. We can only do what we think we can do, if you think you can't do it then it won't happen.

I just want people to keep an open mind when they hear the word disabled or see the wheelchair.

Why is it that people insist on using the words "mentally retarded"? Do you know that we are in the year 2006? People dont use that term anymore.. Try developmentally delayed...A bit more politically correct.

I have a hearing loss in my right ear that is corrected by using a Borg implant

Seriously, I had an implant put on the right side of my head that is hooked to a small device that uses bone conduction to help me hear out of my right ear. It's really cool technology that gives me the ability to hear better without the discomfort of a traditional hearing aid. I have normal hearing in my left ear, so the device restores sound to my right side.

The device is so small, and no one can see it unless I lift up my hair to show someone. I do look like a Borg if I put my hair up and I don't have the device on at the same time. It's a titanium screw. The device is called a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA for short). Check it out on the 'net, search under the full name of the device and you will find some neat info about the latest hearing enhancement technology.

I do not consider myself disabled in any way because I use a lightweight, comfortable device to help me hear better. It's so small and light that I forget I even have it on.

So yep, I have a screw in my head. Heaven forbid if I ever get a screw loose!!!

After a lifetime of great health, I developed a disability which features a pronounced limp. Sometimes I walk with a cane, sometimes without. Without, people ask me what I did to my leg. With they open doors, ask if I need help, and basically treat me as though I am incompetent. I went through a phase where I was very sensitive to (a chemical) and after exposure would slur my speech. People would talk to my then husband and if I had a question, they would give HIM the answer, thinking I was mentally challenged because my speech was slow. Now I move slowly, which was hard to accept at first, but now I realize that I have gotten a lot of things out of this disability, and am a far better and more likeable person (i think)...well I like me better...

Right there with ya! I've been limping for a year and a half due to MS myself; annoying as all get out, isn't it?!?

I just kinda shrug off inane comments, questions, and actions as best I can. There are so many fine people out there it'd be a pity to let all the foolish ones eclipse all the good I can see in the world...if I remember to look!

Later, eh

I have severe osteoporisis and a shattered wrist which wont heal. Broken since 2003 so I have had the gamet of pin/screw systems with different grafts...I think it would have been easier if they just cut it off and give me a hook!!

I dont know if everyone will understand what I mean, but people dont have disabilities, its their environment that is the disabling element in their life. Think about it.

Debatable. But at least I have dis-ability to get a social security pension for it.

Today's society can be a disabling element for sure. Stigma sucks.

I think disability is more in the mind than anything else. People limit themselves I think more than the actual conditions do.

Bi-Polar, Personality Disorder, Anxiety, Paranoia.

Anytime someone talks to me long enough and finds out these things, it's a deal breaker. I guess everyone thinks I'm crazy or something, not the case at all. Just having a hard time with life and the stress I have to deal with etc. Some people just don't understand...

I think disability is more in the mind than anything else. People limit themselves I think more than the actual conditions do.

In some ways this is true, but if you had a condition where there were certain things that if you did them you stood to loose EVERYTHING, what then? i.e. Go sit in a movie theater to watch a movie and it triggers a grand mal siezure, you loose-your license, which then you have to find someone to take you to your doctors appointment and work if you still are able to work, if not you have to find another place to live, most likely with someone else. If you are a single mom you stand to loose your child and if it triggers a consecutive set of siezures you just put down the drain a medication that was keeping them in check.

It isn't the environment that made a person have epilepsy or go blind or loose there hearing. In some instances maybe but not all and it is unfair to say that those of us that have those disablities do not have them. Do you have a disablitly? For you to say that I would say not. SO at the risk of sounding bit*hy please do not go on about something that obviously you know nothing about. Try being IN THAT POSITION before you do.

The brain is a very complicated thing. Mental disorders have already been proven. Sorry, I don't buy that it is the mentally ill person who is at fault and limiting themselves. It's those pesky neurotransmitters and a lack of seratonin.

Rather than get angry at someone who can't relate or maybe understand. I suggest those who have doubts about mental disabilities just read up. No harm in that. NAMI is a good place to start.

If they continue to say strange ignorant things, well, they probably voted for Bush too.

Did you vote for bush too? I was not referring to a mental disability.

OF COARSE THERE ARE REAL DISABILITIES, FOR SOMEONE TO SAY ITS ALL IN THE MIND IS .....OFF THE WALL, SOME PPL CREATE DISABILITIES WHILE OTHERS ACTUALLY HAVE THEM.
MY GRANDDAUGHTER HAS LEARNING DISABILITIES, SHE IS CHALLENGED BY THE SIMPLIEST OF THINGS, AND FOLKS HAVE LOST USE OF CERTAIN MOTOR SKILLS OR BODILY FUNCTIONS, THESE ARE REAL DISABILITIES, THAT DOESNT MEAN THAT THEY ARENT JUST AS IMPORTANT AS ANY ONE ELSE, THEY ARE JUST LIMITED IN WHAT THEY CAN DO.

allh2h,

Actually, I voted for his father. Big mistake.

Since this is a forum and the thread topic is Disabilities. I was referring to Mental Health Disabilities and not going by your comment.

I was also referring to myself getting angry at those who don't understand. You just can't do that to those who just don't quite get it for one reason or another. Education.

Knowledge is power, that sort of thing.

Have a nice day.

No problem. I get testy myself on issues, so I can relate! I have a disability and I have to get along in the world and deal with stigma. Sometimes it's tough. There are many misconceptions out there.

We do the best we can do!
