gasoline price increases will accomplish all of this FAR more effectively than endless gov't ads imploring us to conserve or to 'drive safer' etc.

| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 3/11/2011 12:55:48 PM | Over five bucks an imperial gallon in the lower mainland. I ride a 50cc scooter so I don't think about it too much. Spikes in oil prices inflate the economy. Food, all commodities, everything goes up and stays up. Scooter: fun, economical, not safe, low status, not weather and high wind friendly, some people look good on a scooter and some might not, cheap to insure and maintain, I'm gonna get squished soon. By a Hummer. There is also transit which is decent in this area. | |

| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 3/11/2011 2:33:52 PM | | watch out for high ethanol gas since the more ethanol-the less miles per gallon your car will get and the more gas you will buy. The insanity of using corn to make ethanol and dilute gas with it is so crazy. We will buy more gas to drive the same miles and anything made from corn will rise in price including meat and chicken since its used for animal feed. Governments are using tax dollars to give grants to ethanol manufacturers which drives up food prices and causes more gas to be burnt!!! | |

| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 3/11/2011 4:29:17 PM | Interesting.... I drove by a local gas station this afternoon, and it was $3.47.... I drove back 4 hours later.... it was $3.39! Go figure. But NOW they're saying something about unrest in Saudi Arabia and Fox News is saying it's going to mean "VERY bad news" for us! Just gimme a gun! | |

Instead of the gun, I would suggest turning off Fox News.

| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 3/11/2011 10:12:07 PM | Canadians are used to getting dinged at the pump. When I moved to California in 1986 I was filling up in Torrence for 68 cents a gallon. When I left the States 16 years later it was like $1.68 a gallon. Coming back to Canada it was about 70 cents per liter or two eighty for the bigger imperial gallon. I think a fifth bigger.
At any rate all you can do is manage your income. Cut down on luxuries like food and heat. High gas prices seriously piss folks off. Many people have to drive and even if they don't it's not easy to give it up. They got us by the short hairs.

are the gas prices killing you yet
Not me personally, but they're killing my clients. I haven't raised my prices for on-site service in 3 years, but I've recently add a 50.00 fuel "surcharge", so what used to cost 150.00, now costs 200.00. When prices drop, I'll remove the surcharge, but until then?
Pay me no or pay me later!

| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 3/13/2011 5:06:10 PM | Air prices are getting ridiculous. And, it is still all market speculation which is causing all the increase. | |
|
| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 3/16/2011 7:20:29 AM | No, but all the flash fried food, bourbon, scotch, cigars and stress are.... my car gets 38 mpg so I am doing alright. Anyways, one probably does not want to be in my car with me after consuming said junk food, especially when I have the window lock on. LOL! | |

| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 3/16/2011 1:19:32 PM | | Had family just return from a vacation in Ecuador. The price of gas was $1.38 (US) per gallon. Diesel was $1.02/gal. Super unleaded was almost $2.00/gal. Hmmm.... When I heard this I was like...WHAT? Diesel in Seattle was $5.00/gal this past weekend. I know there are all kind of factors (futures market), but the disparity seems a bit odd. | |

| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 3/16/2011 1:45:28 PM | I know there are all kind of factors (futures market), but the disparity seems a bit odd. Aside from Ecuador being one of Latin Americas largest oil exporters, Nothing odd there.
Similar things happen in many sectors, including but not limited to the drug market.
Just look up the price of prescription drugs in the USA vs Mexico, or even USA vs Canada.
Same drug but very different prices.
Why?
Because they can, now bend over and taken it like a good citizen.

Probably has a lot to do with the standard of living and related costs from country to country as well. Something like $1.38 per gallon might seem cheap, but if minimum wage is only a fraction compared to other countries...
I can't say it's killing me yet, but again, it's all relative. When I moved to the US from Vancouver Island 4+ years ago, my last tank of gas in Nanaimo before heading south was $1.01 a litre, so about $3.70 a gallon. So crossing the border back then, and gas was only $2.03 per gallon when I hit the US? I was in almost-half-price heaven, lol! Here in Virginia Beach it's $3.49 right now, so it's still cheaper than what I was used to paying for almost two decades so it hasn't really affected me yet.
Guess it depends on how far one drives in a day. Even with the increased price at the pump lately, it'll factor out to roughly an extra dollar or so a day for me, which is liveable for me.
Now, not saying how I'll feel in a couple of weeks, if the price keeps increasing though...

| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 3/16/2011 9:15:35 PM | | I know, for the most part it is about 'because they can'. Also, I don't know what percentage of their fuel is taxed or if it is flat. I know here it has all kinds of taxes embedded into the price. There is an indian reservation down the road, that can sell fuel exempt from state taxes....but they have to raise their price to keep from being an unfair competitor to other providers in the area. I guess where I'm going is the basic cost of production per unit of gasoline is basically the same (energywise per countries not crudes ). For the volumes that a refinery outputs, the production (labor) and transportation costs (I imagine) can't be that much higher..can they? It seems it would be more than economical to move all US refining operations overseas and just import refined fuels rather than crude. | |

Are you sure that wasn't the price per liter? Because in most countries, that's the price you see posted. They sell by the liter, not the gallon. If that's what you saw posted at the stations, that was per liter.
I've traveled in over a dozen countries and, while I've never been in Ecuador, I've been in Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Mexico. I've never seen the price of gas to be cheaper anywhere else than in the U.S. Gas was already almost $6/gal. in Italy four years ago.
Still driving your SUV?

| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 3/17/2011 12:07:45 PM | My first question was 'sure it's not per liter?' and the answer was 'it's in gallons'. I still didn't believe it, so I looked all over on line and found that it was the case. Also to note a report from last summer showed prices for a few cities around the world. Here are the cheap prices... Caracas, Venezuela 6 cents/gallon Tehran, Iran 32 cents/gallon Riyadh, Saudi Arabia 45 cents/gallon Kuwait City, Kuwait 85 cents/gallon Cairo, Egypt $1.17/gallon Now Venezuela might not count because their government reimburses a large portion of fuel costs. Things are probably a little different in Egypt these days...but I'm looking around anyways. | |

| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 3/19/2011 5:21:46 PM | Here's an article about it but note the article says the gas prices are from March 2005.
http://money.cnn.com/pf/features/lists/global_gasprices/
"Gasoline prices in the United States, which have recently hit record highs, are actually much lower than in many countries. Drivers in some European cities, like Amsterdam and Oslo, are paying nearly 3 times more than those in the U.S.
The main factor in price disparities between countries is government policy, according to AirInc, a company that tracks the cost of living in various places around the world. Many European nations tax gasoline heavily, with taxes making up as much as 75 percent of the cost of a gallon of gasoline, said a spokesperson for AirInc.
In a few Latin America and Middle-East nations, such as Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, oil is produced by a government-owned company and local gasoline prices are kept low as a benefit to the nation's citizens, he said. All prices updated March, 2005.

ZZZ, GONG, WRONG
people are going to purchase petrol no matter what the price....and drive their youknowwhats
|
| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 4/10/2011 6:44:53 PM | ^ i agree,... here in the NYC area....pple are driving like gas was cheap as water...there are as many cars on the roads as ever, if not more!
and if you think its expensive now....wait till the height of summer!
|
| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 4/11/2011 6:07:33 AM | | Its the equivalent of about 2.0435 US$ per litre over here, in the UK. I think that's about $9 per imperial gallon. If you're doing short journeys and don't need to carry much, a 125cc bike will do 90mpg, but my CB500 will do around 60 mpg. | |
|
| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 4/11/2011 9:12:26 AM | it doesn't mean 100% of people will change their ways due to higher prices; even if only 25 %, or 50% do it has a massive impact.
and prices just haven't gone high enough yet inflation adjusted; don't worry many people WILL change if gas hits $10/gal or more.
if you think not, you have a short memory, in previous times of rapid price increases the 'gas hogs' became a glut on the market, so many people trying to sell their big SUVs & Caddies/Lincolns, etc. -could garb one fairly cheap

| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 4/11/2011 2:47:32 PM | Since the most recent upswing in fuel prices has occurred, has anyone noticed this upswing started when a certain President mentioned,"Our economy can withstand higher fuel prices..." It wasn't 1 day later that the prices started moving up. You can blame speculators if you want, but the price is what it is. I retired from the petro industry a few years ago. I'm glad I'm out of it. It sucked listening to complainers like I was friggen responsible for the price of crude!
Also, someone comented about the use of ethyl alcohol (ethanol) being blended with gasoline. They're right, ethanol does have less energy in it per gallon. The State of Colorado did a test: What does it take to create 1 gallon of ethanol (from corn?) Here's their findings:
It takes 600 gallons of potable water 4 gallons of diesel about 1 acre
All of a sudden, it doesn't sound like the pancea it was believed to be, now does it?
Next we'll talk about the Toyota Prius and how they used arsenic to mine the lead in Canada for the batteries...

| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 4/13/2011 1:44:54 PM | | They are killing me. I used to be able to go out for a leisurely drive every week. Now i have to plan my journeys so i don't use as much fuel. | |
|
| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 4/13/2011 3:09:50 PM | Nope. Not yet. I average one tank about every two months. It does take my breath away when it costs nearly $40 to fill my 10 gallon tank, but hey.

| are the gas prices killing you yet Posted: 4/13/2011 5:30:31 PM | Im giving up my cell plan for a much cheaper pre pay I can use just for emergencies. I dont eat out but found a coffee shop for after a meal at home to still socialize. I dont make trips out of town on my days off like I used to. I have not been to the coast two hours away yet this spring.
Yes gas prices are killing me as I am giving up more to do less.
