as for claims & testing and what constitutes the validity, ...
so are all tests to be limited to things that can be observed by the 5 basic sences in real time?, ... if so that leaves a lot of room for interpretation by a bunch of people who when they get their hands on a reading for any future event to twist and corrupt the intention of what was said by pointing out any vagueness or other aspects that are not exacting to a degree that will identify the exact forseen event without any allowance for another "simular" event that could be possible, "a spectacular explosion" as mentioned by one who forsaw a shuttle blowup during takeoff, it was realy famous when it happened but at the moment it evades my memory, ... yet everyone reading this knows the event i'm trying to remember as well.
but taken to any of those testing places or JREF for example "well there are all kinds of spectacular events, and explotions happen all the time with all the wars around, ... sorry, doesn't count for our standards" , ... ya, i can play word games too, go figure.
or if the event gets mentioned in specific detail to be undeniably what transpires, ... readings about future events happen because the curcumstances that set the event into motion are the most likely to happen, ... so if anyone does anything out of character that has any bearing on the forseen event, "well it didn't happen exactly as you said so your denied again".
i'm not making excuses for why things aren't provable, but it's a reality, readings happen because people blindly go through their lives with a sence of routine, even the guy who wakes up late and rushes to work, mabey he misses breakfast mabey he picks something up, he's still following a set of consistancies about his life and how he reacts to things around him.
when someone does something compleatly out of character, and not on a bet that would be in character but the person who for no reason and out of the blue unforseen by anyone who knew him or any reading done on him suddenly goes to the bar and gets wasted, ... well even the best psychic won't see that one.
but likewise it's also possible for a realy good psychic to see 2 or more possiblities that may transpire, ... so what would groups like JREF say there, ???, well one happened i'll give you that, but these other 2 didn't so your not so dependable ???, or would the reality be something alone 300% accuracy for seeing 3 possible outcomes, ... ya the reality is your arrival at work is that you made it there, that you turned at the red light instead of waiting for it are just possiblities.
or as one set of tests i heard about for someone who claimed they could see aura's regardless of seeing the physical body or not, results where inconclusive between any consistancies of the auras and if a person was there or not, ...
so curiosity that are groups like JREF asking for in these situations ???, how much accuracy ???, while 50% is 50/50, it's a hell of a lot better then the mundane could do.
the other thought is "what would you people do if you actualy saw such a person?", seriously ponder this, if after you did all your tests and analysis and run out of trying to stubbornly insist and persist & run out of ideas and possiblities and word games and anything else to admit defeat, what would you do ???, this becomes a very important question, anyone who is realy familiar with PSI knows your thoughts as well as the would-be psychic are going to have an effect on the test, and if you believe it's not possible for the would-be psychic to be genuine then your interfering with the experiment.
so what would you do if the person was genuine ???, if you, while sitting infront of your computer now, feel like answering "there is no such a thing as a psychic", then your interfering with the experiment, if your going to say "there is such a thing", then your interfering with your obeservations of the experiment.
and for those who are part of JREF in here, ... only if you can identify the other option in your beliefs are you fit to be part of the experiment, ... no this isn't a riddle, but keeping in mind i get sick of word games realy easy if i write down what the other option is there's nothing stopping you from saying "well if i just repeat that then everything is fine and i don't have to be honest." | |

He began; "Our Father..." When He was about to be crucified He was asked if He was a god. His reply was "know ye not that ye are all gods...."
Hints of our interconnectedness come through at times by intuition, such as knowing in advance who is calling us by telephone. When our conscience bothers us about something that we've done to someone an apology is in order as it is the rage of their spirit that we feel.
If there exists interconnection of the living then it follows that there must be interconnection between the living and the dead. This explains mediumship, spiritual visitation and death bed visions as we are about to join our ancestors in that glorious realm beyond the veil of earthly life.
Science is conceding that the human mind remains a great frontier and that not all of what it consists of can be explained by the location and function of the grey matter found in the skull. | |

Posted: 10/15/2006 10:01:37 PM | About 5 years ago, there was 600 Mediums in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. They were promoted on TV every night. For $4.99 a minute on the telephone, they would tell you about your fortune, your love, etc...
Then one day, the company went bankrupt. These 600 Mediums were owed 6 months in back pay that they never received because of the millions that the Company owed to its creditors.
What is amazing, not one of the 600 mediums foresaw the bankruptcy, nor that they would lose 6 month in wages. That speaks for itself. They are all phoney! | |

What is amazing, not one of the 600 mediums foresaw the bankruptcy, nor that they would lose 6 month in wages.
Quick lesson whether or not you beleive in psychics and/or mediums:
Psychic: Capable of extraordinary mental processes, such as extrasensory perception and mental telepathy.
Medium: A person thought to have the power to communicate with the spirits of the dead or with agents of another world or dimension.
So the differences? A psychic is suppose to be able to see future events and predict them. A Medium chanels the dead, kind of like a translator. Huge difference. So if these people you speak of were mediums..of course they wouldn't be able to see that they would get shafted in the end..because they aren't psychic.

How many cowboy builders exist just now? And yet there are still real builders with qualifications to be found. It may be very dificult to tell the difrence between a cowboy builder and a qualified builder, but that dose not mean that every builder is unqualified.
Exchange the word builder, with any other job out there, for example medium and there you have the most important point about the 600 mediums thing. | |

Posted: 10/16/2006 10:10:40 PM | Interesting question. Personally, I suspect that most of them are frauds out to trick people and get their money.
It’s also easy to understand why people would be so desperate that they would seek out mediums to find some kind of closure. The loss of a loved one for many people is a terrible, nightmarish experience.
Most Christians have heard the notion that in the beginning there was a great, huh “disagreement” between God and Lucifer. And that in the end a third of the “host of heaven” bugged out with Lucifer.
So what are all these numberless knuckleheads doing all this time. They are spirits that are doing what they can to tempt the Children of Men to make extraordinarily bad decisions about stuff. And as a result wind up totally on God’s bad side.
Well, even if a Medium is not knowingly a fraud, who is to say that these spirits who have had lifetimes to watch people and tempt them, not “fake it”. Perhaps they pretend to be the loved ones that have passed, just to try and deceive living people. There may be a lot of hope, a lot of happiness, but what is the “lie” that is always in the works of Satan and his buds.
I believe that God’s house is a house of order. When a person dies they return to God. They don’t hang around and haunt places and all kinds of other stuff. But I don’t doubt the possibility that Lucifer’s followers in their evil designs might pretend to be that which they are not, and in their hatred for all things obedient to God's plan, never will be.

they're simple spirits with one thing on their mind, self-preservation, like anything else.
sure we attribute them to be "evil" and their survival is based on having us do more "evil",
evil becomes anything you want it to become, but at it's core it's the negative emotions, hate, greed, and the like that cause so much hurt amoung others. and from these emotions that so many people charish & hold (even if unknowingly) enough of this thought existed to become aware of itself, millions of bible thumpers will dissagree, yet that's about what it is.
satan & devils & demons aren't looking to spread evil & chaos for the sake of spreading evil and chaos, they're spreading it because the emotions that others bring up, all those negative feelings and thoughts, is like food to them. or at least without any of those negative feelings those demons would vanish, so in the act of self-preservation the more of the emotion that they need to continue the more they will do to have us feed & sustain them.
a lot of this is energy related which for those who don't believe in psychics will never understand, even if they do know & realize that when in the presence of happy people they're happier & when in the presence of depressed people it also effects them. but the same person who sees this still won't believe in psychics and will never understand the energy that everyone has & radiates.
anyway, ... the bible people promote the bible wanting to find some deeper meaning by connecting various passages & phrases to bring about new meaning, ... or was that to promote what they wanted the bible to mean ???,
god & jesus, about love & forgiveness, yet the churches like to condemn others, ridicule others, play guilt trips, control, demands & expectations, ... so much for love & forgiveness.
for the church groups, believe it or not, when trying to get anyone to do something they don't want to do, you drive them farther away from what you want them to do in the first place. all the church groups would want to tell me how i'm going to hell, or how i'll be happier or how i should change for them, how i should do what they say, how i should do anything other then be happy with myself, and in doing all this i resent them all that much more because in such actions i don't see people who are promoting the love of god, i see people who are using the name of god to have me do what they would want. there is no acceptance for me to be myself, and i move that much farther away from the churches every time.
in addition to just the surface observation of driving someone away you build agression and anger in others because you are trying to control them, you build anger and agression in yourself because you want to be obeyed and it's not working, ... that's a lot of anger and agression. 50,000 churches later and it's no wonder all those demons & devils & satan are doing so well they're having a feast on all those negative thoughts your breeding.
if those churches could sit down and be an inspiration for me to join, never ask, never beg, never dictate, just be an inspiration for their beliefs. if those churches could fill themselves with all the love and admiration they could muster, not to show off, but because every member actualy felt that way, isn't that the way of jesus ??? isn't that how jesus had so many followers ???, because he was genuine, because he was full of love for his fellow man, because he did not judge, because he did not tell anyone how they should live their life, didn't jesus accept everyone and feel love for everyone ?
wasn't it the romans who tried to control and dictate how everyone should live, and out of the roman way one man stands up with love in his heart and people followed that love, not because they where told to, but they followed because they wanted to, because they where inspired.
those church groups who try to dictate and control are creating all the negative emotion that those demons need to survive. it doesn't matter whos name it's in, the result is still the same.
as for the person who commented about how a medium / psychic should have forseen the company they worked for going under and getting stiffed. that's among the top of the realy sad excuses i've heard about why psychics are frauds.
one for the brain, think about this now, think realy hard, ... it's important. :)
a psychic or medium or any other of simular nature, they all work by getting information about what they are thinking about. if they aren't focused on a particular situation, person or thing they won't recieve information about it.
kinda like how you get suprised when bad news happens, but in hindsight if you where paying attention to things going on around you the week before, or day before, or even earlier that day, usualy you would have seen it coming.
a psychic is no different, if a psychic wants to trust their job as secure and not doubt if "this is the week it's going to end", they can focus on other things, ... like the callers. so while those psychics where focused on the callers and answering their requests about career, finances & love they were able to see & recieve information that was relavent to those callers.
think about it now. ... they wheren't focused on the company they worked for, they where focused on the callers.
as for the difference between a medium and psychic, a psychic depends upon their own intuition, a medium depends upon a spirit guide, they can both communicate with the dead, one does it with their own 6th sence, the other needs their guide
one needs a deck of cards, one needs the relavent number, one reads chicken bones, one reads tea leaves, one reads the stars, one reads palms, one reads auras, one reads ...
a psychic depends on their own intuition directly, a medium depends upon contact with their guide, ... i know and have talked with plenty of both, (and other readers).
as i've said before, there are frauds out there, then again there are also frauds in other lines of work, anything where people can get money for work, then don't do the work, does that mean that no one could have done the work ???
drywall disposal, ... heck, any kind of disposal, contractors for anything, or for that matter any kind of scam out there in the world, real estate, charity, ... pick something, someone has found a way to make money off of it, and that in no way means there aren't some honest people out there, it only means there are some dishonest people out there.
i've said before it's about belief, if you believe then you believe. if you don't believe, then sit in your little world never take an honest look with an open unopinionated mind and find out what makes sence, just close the door and never once challenge your thoughts, views and beliefs, the world might end, heaven may fall, hell may rise up, ... and in the end after all the chaos settles again the world may seem a little brighter then it was before.
much like armageddon the bible talks about, the end of the world, (as we know it), ya, realy sucks when people leave out that end part "as we know it". but if you never challenge your beliefs never question what is real, you never learn, you never grow, you can ignore what anyone else says that you disagree with.
i've listened to the church, i've believed there was no god, i've thought the world around us was all there was, ... and i've grown, and wondered, and questioned, honestly some things where realy scary & unsettling, at the time i desperatly needed some comfort in my old views, because the new ones scared me, but after the fear died down what i see now is much greater then i could have possibly understood before. and in recent years i've found science has also grown and is starting to question, and science is starting to learn, unlike myself though, science is starting to prove it.
so if you don't believe that's fine, many go through life without believing and don't have problems, so it's not that big a deal, for those that come to understand more, well they can also acheive more, mabey not a lot, mabey not even what others would notice, but they could tell you it helped them out. | |

taking money for a reading or healing always has been wrong from my point of view. Even so I have mellowed there with age and try to accept people's choice to charge, it still is a red cloth for me. I am glad to read that you have a bs filter, a very handy tool cause all that comes through at times is just that. I can only speak for myself and not for others, I try to tell people that their live is in their own hands and what they make out of it is up to them. (Destiny, fate, will play a part). Their decisions are their own, right or wrong. Sometimes a major impact in a persons live will cast a shadow. | |

Posted: 10/19/2006 1:19:08 AM | I have been reading all the post on this thread. Some of them just sent my blood boiling!! Mainly the ones who call being psychic or being a medium "the works of the Devil!"
I have been called a "witch" since the 1st grade. I grew up crying all the time and not knowing why, and was punished for it! Having "Psychic" abilities were the "work of the Devil".
I knew things, felt things..and was quiet. I saw things, felt things, and I was quite. My self esteem trashed! When I was in my mid 20's, a co-worker saw these things in me and gave me permission to "be who I am". I put my toe in the water to test the tempreture. I gradually "came out of the closet" as it were over a number of years. My accuracy when reading people surprises me even now!! I attribute it to my working in Mental Health for over 33 years..knowing human behavior....but some things just happen that I can't explain or give a reason for! When my brother in law died, I heard him in my head say "Jan you were right, this is wonderful" only to get a call moments later that he had died. Purpose?? When I did a massage on a lady I didn't even know, a person popped into my head...he said "tell her I am here." I then replied mentally, who are you? "He said "I am Johnny". I knew that her son had been murdered 4 weeks earlier, but that was all the information I had on her! I mentally told "Johnny" I wasn't going to say anything unless he could validate something about my client. He said she was born in LA. So, playing along I said "Dorothy, were you born in Lousiana?" She said "yep", My eyes got as big as saucers!! I then said "who is Johnny? Bright affect, big smile, really happy? she replied "Oh that's my brother. He was murdered 5 years ago during a robbery on his way home from work". Internally I was freaking out!! I then asked her "did you buy a house recently?" She said yes. I asked "two story with a loft upstairs between the bedrooms?" (I could visualize it) She laughed and said "yes"...."well, your brother wants you to put a pool table up there!". She almost fell off the table laughing and said "that's my brother!!" We talked quite a bit after the massage...she and her husband were very active in the church. Her husband dropped out after their son was murdered. During the conversation, an elderly lady came to mind and I described her to Dorothy. It was her husbands deceased mother. I explained to Dorothy that it wasn't Gods fault that her son died. That every thing bad that happens, people are quick to blame God. The Devil just loves that too! (The Devil can take a life, but not give it!!) She wanted me to talk to her husband who was so lost in grief. I talked with her husband...no visions, no spirits...just a talk from the heart and how we do go on living even after death. He went back and got involved in the church again realizing that it isn't always Gods fault when something bad happens!! I don't seek out spirits because you can conjur up dark entities that can fool you! When it happens I have to really be cautious cause I don't know which one it is!! I was massaging my sister who had some back problems. I saw a well defined round swollen area on her right shoulder blade...I knew it wasn't a muscle! I told her to get a chest x-ray. She did the next day. She had a tumor in her lung, that size in that area!! The raised area was never to be seen again! The works of the Devil or God wanting me to alert my sister?? (She survived and has been cancer free now for 5+ years!)
My hands heat up when I get around someone that may be hurting or sick, not always, but when I guess it's necessary to bring it to their attention somehow...I don't know...But I zero in on who it is, tell them what I think is going on and ask if I can put my hands on them...They validate me before I touch them....and, they are relieved!
I didn't ask for this "gift"....I don't charge for this information. When I am told I should, I tell people that the information is not mine to charge for. I dont' tell the future even if I know it for fear it will alter the path one needs to take in order to learn. I try to live my life with a Christ like mind and teach "Unconditional Love" as we are all suppose to do. I don't believe in organized religion as most are FEAR BASED. While the Bible is a true history book, MAN decided what was to be put in the Bible out of all the information they had. So much is left out!! To get an accurate account of what happend in the days before an after Christ, you need to read the Torha (sp) and the Koran. Watch the history channel when they do series like "who wrote the bible" etc. AND...God did speak to people in dreams and give them insight into future events!! So which is it? The works of the Devil or the works of God??? A true Medium is a Validator for the living...like John Edward tells people, "I am just the messenger". Each time this weird thingy called being a "medium" happens, and I pass along the information...the person whom it is intended for, makes them feel relieved to know that we exist on another demension. Everyone has these abilities..we were born with them! Most humans have forgotten them as they got older. Each and every one of you has had an experience to some degree or another. It's who we are! Yes there is good and there is Evil and being a psych..I know about both! I am a magnet for it because I am so sensitive! I dont' "meditate" nor call on the "spirits"....I have just learned to listen to my heart and what it tells me. I don't "decide" who to heal, it just happens....am I a receiver to other peoples thoughts? Have no idea..due to the fact we are energy based...it would be no different than using a cell phone which sends electricity over the air waves!! You can be a sender or a receiver or block all calls!
And Yes, there is a multitude of phoneys and frauds out there trying to make a buck at this stuff. So much so that I don't even tell people I am psychic, intuitive, empathic, clairvoyant or a healer. I don't want to be thrown in to that catagory. I can't just bring it on at will! It's there I guess when it's needed. When I was down one day feeling sorry for myself...I was told (mind voice) that "Psychic are Gods Angels on this earth". I know that the people I help makes them feel good, gives them faith not only in themselves, but renews the faith in their spiritual beliefs...takes the saddness away...validates...but makes for a very lonely life for me!
So for those of you who think that being Psychic is the work of the Devil, you must really be a mess when you get a "psychic glich" when the phone rings and you know ahead of time who it is, or have a dream come true, or hear your name called out only to turn your head and no one is there...or catch an image out of your periphial vision and you KNOW something was there....or get a feeling something bad is going to happen if you do something.....and you do it and it turns out bad! It's who we are!! Just like anything else in life...some people are better at things "naturally" more so than others...It is not a gift...it's just who I am... | |

And ya know...it's comments like that, just being mean..is why I keep this stuff to myself most of the time. Too much ignorance out there and your comment was an example of that ignorance! I wish it was epilepsy! Then I could be a skeptic and just take my meds! If you knew more about that disorder, you would then know that some of our greatest minds, muscians, and artist in history had TLE. Most of their work was done while having a seizure!

I've had some of the same experiences you have. The reason I forced myself to stop some of the psychic activity years ago was because I was able not only to see and feel some things before they happened, but could also encourage things to happen as well through mental imaging and intense belief. On one occasion I went a little too far with it and repented. From then on, while I still occasionally invoke the ability, I never again practiced it with the same intensity.
I realize the vast majority of people believe such occurrences are the foolish imagining of a person who isn't in touch with reality. However, as you are aware, virtually all mystics believe and are able to perform miraculous psychic deeds. True Kabbalahists, as well as those mystic gurus in India, enlightened Zen masters, and meditating Taoist practitioners are all able to go beyond the dimensions of the observable and sensory world we live in. I've experienced the validity of it myself and despite the fact scoffers abound, I know and believe many who are active in achieving psychic realizations are valid practitioners. | |

Jesus Christ if a person possess this type of ability and has a personal relationship with Christ #1 he has a direct connection with Christ and is in tune with listening and knows exactly what to do when a message comes... another thing to remember is Christians know that" Confusion is not of God.." knowing that information alone is all any one needs to know the differance between the two types of messagess ...you need to be carefull not to glorify satan...How ? by repeating or verbalizing a message which is negative in origon , oppressive, etc.. for example lets say i was given a vision and in that vision i saw someone get killed , ok what should i do with that info ...first i would rebuke the devil from my imediate location verbally out loud By saying GET THEE BEHIND ME SATAN YOU HAVE NO AUTHORITY OVER ME YOU ARE A LIAR IN JESUS NAME I COMAND YOU TO GO !!...that imediatly puts him where he belongs under my feet than i would say thank you Jesus .. giving God the glory for that gift of authority over evil i would then be carefull not verbalize any part of my negative vision for in doing so gives satin the power to make it come to pass ... he is like a vulture waiting for us to give up any information that he can use againts us so if we say nothing he has no idea what will work understand? (we need to understand satan does not possesss the ability to read our thoughts he can only hear us speak our thoughts ) he hears what we say so if we stiffle those negative visions then the devil loses ground and does not have a clue what to do...there is power of life and death in the tongue... He can and does wisper negative things in our ears which most people dont realize but its simple ...remember the old cartoons with the angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other thats exactly how it works only you cannot see them its more spiritual one side representing the darkness opressive confusion anger etc.. and the other light and comfort and happiness and joy etc.. i can go on and on forever just remember to always glorify God by thanking him out loud thank you Jesus that once again tells the devil who you serve write me if you have any questions i have so much information that is important ok ciao thanks every one for reading my reply N.G. | |

This ability just hits me when ever. I don't seek out information on how to "improve it" or make it stronger. I dont' see things before they happen. I have never had precognitive dreams and I can't pick the winning lottery numbers. I have studied the "scientific" side of all of this looking for understanding of the mind and how it works. And I am still studying....And what you said in your last paragraph was so true. Thank you for your response. | |

Posted: 10/20/2006 11:26:23 AM | Sunny, I have a very strong personal relationship with Jesus. He protects me and warns me constantly...and I listen to him! I once had a really weird co-worker give me an astrological reading and as he presented it to me, he also had a book of spells with him. (He looked like a gargoyal!! He hadn't been working our facility for very long.) He sat there and tried to convince me that I could do spells and have anything I wanted...that all Angels were the same and there was no good or evil. He said with my "powers" I would help more people if I learned these spells. I felt like I had come face to face with pure evil!! I couldn't get him out of the house fast enough! Lots of prayer work after that, thanking Jesus for the insight!! Funny, he was fired a short time later.
Since the beginning of time, there has been psychics and people have always flocked to them for advice when they can't find answers. Since the beginning of time, every time our world becomes chaotic, people say we are living in the end times. Did you know that there were two letters written about the end times? The religious guys picking and choosing what would be included and what would be left out, choose the version that you now see in the Bible. Why? Because This version evoked fear in people. They could control the masses. The other version gave hope. With the technology that we now have, it seems like there are more "psychic" individuals coming out of the walls! Look around at our world. Look at our society! It's a mess! The values, morals, and laws that God gave Moses are being bent and twisted by the liberals!! (By the way...there were over 200 laws God gave Moses for man to live by...but the 10 were a Readers Digest Condensed version) If the humans now would NOT rely on psychics, and medications, (or street drugs) to get thru their daily routenes with the focus on how much money they want and the materialistc stuff they think they need, look inward, learn coping skills and have faith, the "wanna be" psychics would be out of business!(We are now seeing the downside to the moral changes of the '60's and '70's)
All humans have this ability (We were made in His Image remember?) It's what they do with it that determines wether it is used for good or bad. My work has never been used for personal gain, nor money. In EVERY instance...it has been for good. I have a granddaughter who is an empath. She was born with it as I was. Seeing this in her, I was able to help her understand why she had so many overwhelming feelings, crying all the time. To sort out what was hers and what was someone elses. She is very active in the church and loved dearly by all those around her and who come in contact with her. She has the most amazing loving spirit that just radiates love. She has learned (from me as she was growing up) to have a Christ like mind and to always practice "unconditional" love, not judgemental. And....she is only 16 years old! Now, because she has these abilities, I fear that people are going to convince her that she is the product of the DEVIL! I have also taught her (as she has questioned me) when she has been given information by the church...to sort out "internally" what "feels" right. All organized religion, while meaning well, have some "man made laws" they say are scripture. Some ideas are really bazzar! I taught her to eliminate things that don't "feel" right and retain the ones that do. That God will direct her to what is right.
I don't set up booths at psychic fairs and give readings for $25 and I can't "connect" with people who are into this "new age" stuff. I am a teacher, a counselor. Not a fortune teller with a crystal ball who conjurs up spirits to ease someones mind or heart. I help people understand what is going on with them, offer choices for them to make. I never tell them what to do. I discourage the use of ojui boards...(they are a vehicle in which dark energy can come thru.) I discourage siences (sp). I don't tell them they are going to go to hades if they don't change their ways. And your right about the prayer work. I get soo hurt when people tell me I am doing the work of the devil because they fear what I may know. THAT in itself is the work of the devil....to break down my belief system, my faith,my self esteem and jump on the bandwagon with the rest of the humans in this cahotic mess we call "society". | |

Recently I had a patient who everyone thought was nuts, including her clergy....Mental health ready to put her on medication....she was having TLE. She was discharged without taking any psych meds.
So you come on these forums to harrase people or do you have something informative and postive to contribute?
"I'm sure you could use the money".....you don't know me or my financial situation. Why make a statement like that if not to be nasty?
I read your profile and it does explain a lot about your thought processes. It's been chemically altered, so I will go easy on you. Think a lot harder on how you come across to people. The manifestations of hormones and neurotransmitters and such. The knowledge of the aforementioned is the result of scientific investigation. Remember that? Science? In 1924 Scientfic American magazine offered a 10 thousand dollar cash prize to any medium who could come forth and show that they were genuine. The had to meet a set of rules established by Harry Houdini. One by one the most famous psychics and mediums came forth and Houdini exposed them one by one. To my knowledge the prize was never awarded. Is this whole practice fraudulent? What do you think?
IMO...Fraudulent. I have never experienced/seen a psychic or medium performance that could not be rationally explained.
I used to perform magic as a hobby. Been doing it since I was a kid. I've studied a LOT of the methods used by mediums and psychics, wich are essentially identical as some of the methods used by magicians. Cold Reading - One Ahead Principles - etc...etc... Most are based on pure psychology, but they're very effective and work near 100% of the time.
(Most) respectable magicians/mentalists treat their art as a form of entertainment, and are happy to say so and to work as such so that the audience has a constructive and enjoyable experience. Many 'psychics' and 'mediums' are con-artists who use their talent (it is a talent) in a destructive manner to extort money from their individual clients which I find to be wrong. To be fair, they are some that can be very ethical, but they are few and far between. I have worked with some very ethical entertainers in the past, but it is still only entertainment.
I absolutley detest so-called 'psychics' and 'mediums' that present their talent in such a way as to negatively feed (finacially or otherwise) off the psychological conditions of their clientel. There are a few Magicians/mentalists that fall into this category as well, but their numbers are few.
I am in full support of the Randi / Houdini challenges, and to date NO ONE has been able to credibly submit to either of them. | |

Posted: 10/20/2006 12:59:12 PM | I can't say I support the JREF because the fix is in...for the simple reason of an extremely narrow worldview that starts with an unscientific approach. If you start with the hypothesis, "These people are all frauds trying to con an unsuspecting public and take their money," and Randi has made no bones about the fact that these are his public feelings despite any pretentions to an unbiased approach, then you can guarantee that that's what the end result will be.
As a purely scientific materialist worldview, if you are looking only for "paranormality" you would probably be disappointed.
Now frankly I do not accept the premise that the majority of people who pass themselves off as mediums or psychics are deliberate frauds or con artists. I think many of them sincerely believe in what they are doing and their approach and worldview is being mistaken for something it is not. I will explain my opinion on this in a moment. Suffice it to say the majority of the commercial 1-800 tarot and psychic lines at 5$ a minute, I could be convinced that it is a little less than above board due to the lack of personal contact...however, caveat emptor.
On to the point. If we were to look down our noses at people offering belief in the supernatural and the powers that be and donating or giving money to them, quite frankly you would have to lock away the countries clergy. Some of you might not be offended at that idea either. But to some people this fills a psychological need.
As an insight to how some of it might work you need only consult Jung. Symbols such as the Tarot have resonations within the imaginations for people and may cause them to recall things in their memory or unlock different ways of thinking, altering their reactions or approaches to others which may seem later very much like "magic" has occurred but is in fact a very normal bit of human behaviour...no less magical in its own way I suppose.
Speaking to a medium may have a therapeutic value for some. In ancient Greece, the "sleep temples" offered the grieving a chance to speak to the spirits of the departed and ease their suffering. It was likely a purely psychological effect...a self induced hallucination brought on by low light, hypnogogic imagery and/or trance state... who cares in the end if it had a positive effect?
Having said all this... for an ephemeral service...what should such an individual charge? Well I guess whatever the market and reputation for effectiveness as a therapist allows. If a person walks away feeling more centered, more complete and more effective as a human being, without drugs, who are we to say they are a "fraud?"
Sure maybe they don't REALLY speak to spirits of the dead. Pastors don't REALLY talk to God. Catholic priests REALLY don't transubstantiate the Communion. We don't lock them up. You're welcome to try. | |

Here these people are trying to have a discussion about what they believe, and this idiot has to come into the thread spouting hatred, nonsense with his drug induced delusions. He tries to baffle us with his BS because he has nothing better to do than to harass people who want nothing more than to rationally discuss a subject like adults.
But you and you're drug induced brain damage has made you offensive, idiotic and confrontational. I would suggest to you that suicide is an option for the sake of the human race, but given your over indulgence of drugs, I dont think its possible for you to reproduce anymore. Failing that, it seems your personality will prevent the unthinkable happening and may provide the world with your early demise. Besides, I seriously doubt any of the hookers you rent would touch you without protection. So the human race is safe. We just have to wait for you to silently disappear.
Now, get out of this thread with your hostility, and take mine with you. You are ignorant, idiotic and a drug induced psychotic. Either that or you grew up getting beat up by little girls who took your lunch money and this is your way of getting even. Either way...go away.
