| Man sued for lying on dating sites Posted: 1/13/2006 9:13:42 AM | Thats pretty deep stuff. Did he actually meet them and have money or anything pass hands? Or was it all just text messaging like this forum?
Cuz no ones ever going to be totally honest on these things for their own safety if nothing else.
If its just a matter of bs-ing your occupation on a profile, I can't see anyone taking a case like that or bothering with it. Besides that... good luck proving it. He must have met them cuz you can't sue someonbe for a false profile unless you some sort of definitive proof, which could only happen if you got to know the person.
Online you could never tell.

| Man sued for lying on dating sites Posted: 2/15/2006 7:14:45 PM | I came across a dating site that had on its registration page a notice that anyone married representing themselves as single were violating some statute and would be guilty of fraud, and that the site did ID verification and would report offenders to law enforcement. I'm no lawyer, but fraud usually has to involve intent to do harm and include intention to obtain money, so I'm not sure if this is valid.
Any lawyers here who can comment?

| Man sued for lying on dating sites Posted: 2/19/2006 8:18:48 PM | If you are married and representing yourself as single, or if you are a convicted criminal, be aware that you could be guilty of fraud and subject to civil and criminal penalties under U.S. federal and state law. For example Title 18, Section 1343 of the U.S.Code authorizes fines up to $250,000 and jail sentences up to five years for each offense.
I guess misrepresenting yourself is a crime. Fraud!!!

| Man sued for lying on dating sites Posted: 2/19/2006 11:12:27 PM | The first post is what true.com post
I checked the law Title 18, Section 1343 of the U.S.Code out and it says
Section 1343. Fraud by wire, radio, or television
Whoever, having devised or intending to devise any scheme or artifice to defraud, or for obtaining money or property by means of false or fraudulent pretenses, representations, or promises, transmits or causes to be transmitted by means of wire, radio, or television communication in interstate or foreign commerce, any writings, signs, signals, pictures, or sounds for the purpose of executing such scheme or artifice, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than 20 years, or both. If the violation affects a financial institution, such person shall be fined not more than $1,000,000 or imprisoned not more than 30 years, or both
Well did the guy misrepresent himself to get something? That would be fraud. I think these women are after his money.

| Man sued for lying on dating sites Posted: 2/20/2006 4:02:05 AM | i agree. I mean fraud would be dangerous if signing a contract or something important like that as an example. Not for having a profile online. If thats the case most of the people using the internet should be sued for fraud, because we all fib a bit on here about something at some point.
But signing onto a website as single when your married and never actually meeting people or leading them on? How would you even prove that or show it as harmful in any way? good luck

| Man sued for lying on dating sites Posted: 2/20/2006 7:09:40 AM | This will never fly in court, not even in NYC. They are having enough time trying to regulate the internet as it is. If the USA had things their way, there would be an FBI agent looking over your shoulder every time you sit at the computer. But since this case will never make it past the first rounds of judges, I pray that whoever gets stuck with this case has enough common sense to throw these 2 women out of court for being idiots.
You can't blame other people for your own faults. If these women were that gullible to fall for that sh|t, they deserve what's coming. Now, if he had taken money or other possessions (beyond inflicting "emotional distress"), it would be different.
So yeah.. umm.. yay for the USA and their sue-happy residents?

| Man sued for lying on dating sites Posted: 3/9/2006 7:07:11 AM | | sued based on what law? There's nothing actually here that states you have to be totally truthful, in fact they seem to encourage a certain amount of secrecy for safety's sake. | |
|
| Man sued for lying on dating sites Posted: 3/9/2006 7:27:33 AM | I read that in Michigan, the state is working on enforcing some new laws concerning online dating... hopefully more people who use the personals as games to prey others will be penalized and others will have some legal aspects soon, not only covering marrieds on dating sites. There are currently not many legalities covering dating sites.... and preditors come to many of them to go unnoticed to prey on others.
sickos out there | |
|
| Man sued for lying on dating sites Posted: 3/9/2006 7:30:50 AM | how is being married on POF going to be seen as illegal if your only posting to forums and not meeting anyone?
See, that kinda of "Prohibition" mentality is what makes people lie and be sneaky to get thru the loopholes.

Gee.. I ought to sue all those girls that faked that orgasm and told me that they only loved me for being me.. and that they didn't care about money. If there is one case worthy of class-action status, this ought to be it!!!!

| Man sued for lying on dating sites Posted: 3/9/2006 6:00:39 PM | (In their lawsuits the two women, Tiffany Wang and Jing Huang, accused Dr. Khaled Zeitoun, 46, of pretending to be single and using mind games to entice them into sexual relationships with tales of past lives.)
sounds a bit more than just lieing on his profile i think maybe this will get to court and wouldn't supprise me if he lost
(In a written response to the court papers filed by Huang, Zeitoun admitted that he told her he was single and had relationships with other women he met on the Internet. )

Of course, America is the only place in the world where you can try to sue someone...fail...then sue your lawyer for failing to win the case. Go figure.
