Sushi! CalgaryPage 2 of 2    (1, 2)
Had this appear in my inbox a while ago and thought I should post it here before it disappeared entirely...

(Ok, this is the 3rd time trying to post this - I didn't read anything in the FAQ about length being an issue, so here goes!)

Sushi - ahhh, you have come to the right place for advice grasshoppersan. Calgary has some of the best sushi I have had. And some of the worst!

Don't bother with the "fast-food" sushi like mall sushi, or Edo - it's not worth it.

NE
Misai on 32nd Ave NE is excellent - I used to drive all the way up from McKenzie Towne for that meal.
Yak…? on 36th Street NE just south of 16th Ave on the east side in the strip mall has a good lunch special. Haven't had dinner there.

NW
Globefish on 14th Street NW got a great review from John Gilchrest on CBC.
There's a brand spankin' new place on 10th Street NW in Kensington - I don't know the name yet, but a friend likes it.
Wasabi is good - on 16th Ave NW
Sushi BBQ across from SAIT on 16th Ave NW was good and has those grills in the table - why does the name of the grill escape me at the moment… uh d'uhhhhh. Anyhow - it has lineups galore.

Central
Sakana Grill - Good food
Sushi Tokyo - in Dragon City Mall - main floor on Centre and 5th Ave S.
-don't know the name, but the chinese mall on 16th Ave N and Centre Street, 2nd floor is OK.
Wa's on Centre by the Regal Begle used to be good, haven't been there in a while.
Sushi Ichiban - (Macleod Trail S & 39th-ish) has an all you can eat - they're OK, but I like others better
Sumo in Eau Claire wasn't bad - is it still open?
Fujiyama on 5th Ave next to the Telus building is very good.
Hana Sushi on 4th Str. SW is good - and there was one just a block south (Sushi Kawa I think) of that too that I hear was good.
Sushi Hiro - I hear is good, but I haven't been.
Japanese Village isn't my first choice - Yakiniku is good there though (cooked stir-fry type food).
I can't remember the name, but there is a place next to Starbucks and the UPS store on Centre Street North just kitty-corner from Westworld - serves pretty good sushi.
Shijiki on Centre Street North just south of the old Brick is good. I ate there quite some time ago.

SE

There's a new one I ate at very recently, and it was AWESOME! The sushi melted in your mouth. That chef knew how to carve! AHHHH! It also got an excellent rating from Gilchrest from CBC - over @ South Trail (Deerfoot & 130th Ave) by the Keg and Canadian Tire - it's called Ichizen - FANTABULOUS! SOOOOO worth the drive!

I know there are places out this way, and I might have eaten at them, but not in such a long time.

SW
Ginza @ Chinook is OK
Kinjo's is Excellent - I have sushi school certificate #001 from when Peter was part owner of Sakana Grill. Lovely man, great food.
Kyoto 17 is pretty OK
Sushi Tokyo in Southport Tower is very good
Banzai in the Safeway mall by New York New York - not so good, but I know people who love it.
Pearl something I think on the corner of 37th Ave and Bow Trail by Westbrook mall isn't bad I've been told, but I didn't like the aroma in there.

I can probably lead you to a few more restaurants, but this is what's in my head right now. Crazy!!

Disclaimer: And these are my personal opinions of food experienced there - no libelous lawsuits please!

hmm... Ichizen--so just a few blocks from my house...

My recommendation is Richmond House Sushi in the SW. It's beside the CDN Tire on Richmond Road. One of the train ideas and excellent sushi chefs with great experience - formerly from the Samurai at the Banff Springs Hotel.

I just went to Sakana's tonight. Really good there too and theres a relatively cheap sushi boat that is fresh and tasty for a really good price.... Might be a good idea for a week night.
I know I already killed this thread but whatever....

LOL! Unfortunately, it isn't common enough knowledge that Japanese or Sushi Restaurants do not only serve raw fish! The raw food is only a portion of the menu! There are some really really good dishes on the menu. Some of my favourites are tempura, Agedashe tofu (deep fried), and katsu (breaded chicken).

We discussed this at Ethnic Food night this week! Quite a few were interested. It would be good if we had one experienced sushi person at each table to help out for ordering with the people who haven't been before.

Sushi buffets and all-you-can-eat are good ideas, however, there are pitfalls - especially for larger groups. One of them being getting ordering sheets fast enough to enjoy the food before your time limit is up!

A tatami room is a good place to seat a dozen folks if you don't want to sit at the grills - if the restaurant has them.

I'm sorry there have been some bad restaurant experiences, however, it's like any other business - not everywhere is good to deal with. Keep in mind that just because it's a Japanese restaurant, the owners and staff are not necessarily Japanese.

And a couple corrections - the restaurant at Southport Towers is Tokyo Garden -and it's right next to Classic Q - for pool and drinks afterwards? Midori is on 17th Ave & 10th Street SW. I REALLY want to like them and support them, but I keep getting so-so food, and other people have been really happy there.

OH! And what I said about Mall sushi - all I meant is it's ok for fast food - but if you want a good meal - go to a reputable restaurant. There's nothing nastier than old stinky fish, guys.

And I have found over the years that even experienced sushi consumers have differing opinions of what is GOOD sushi!

Ginza, well, if you are going, I'd rather drive a couple blocks south and go to Kinjo's instead. He's even open until 10pm - something not too common for Japanese Restaurants.

~M~

Oh and for you Edmontonians - there is Midori (I believe could be Misato - not affiliated with the Calgary restaurant) by Ikea in the shops that are at the south end of Calgary Trail. The owner is definitely Japanese, and a lovely man. They serve the VERY MOST excellent Japanese fusion food. I will for sure eat there when I go north next (hopefully soon so I can pay my accumulating interest debt - thanks Mr. Speed!!)

C'mon - with a name like sake - you're either fish or alcohol - we can have both!

Drop me a line. Should be able to get some POFers to join us. MMMMM. Company!
