| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 1/8/2006 12:59:28 AM | When I was 14, I went to spend a summer in Boston with my Dad (my parents divorced when I was 4).
Dad didn't have much money, and apparently had no clue that teenaged boys need a lot of food. I was soo hungry! When Dad made chinese food, I ate and ate. It was rice based, so he didn't mind me eating a lot--rice is cheap. It was my first experience with chinese food. Because my first experience with it was under starvation conditions, I have forever loved the flavor of soy sauce since.

Posted: 1/8/2006 8:23:18 PM | sugar sandwiches, loved it powdered eggs, hated it chunk of bologna from the roll fried and 2 slices of wonder bread, still love it. Gov cheese sandwiches, hated it, the cheese would never melt. Hog head cheese, what n the hell was that all about. chittlins, spell it like it sounds. If I could have moved out at that age, I would have. one last thing, pork n beans and hot dogs. the dogs that turned the water in the pot red, that was my fav, won't touch the stuff now. Oh! for those who can remember, red is my fav flavor of cool-aid.

I could go on and on, Mom was a great cook.

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 1/28/2006 4:41:32 PM | my mom was such a great cook. today i'm remembering her juicy hamburgers; sometimes topped with a fried egg when served with some boiled tates and creamed spinach. sounds so simple, but it was all savory.
she made some sort of roasted eggplant dip i never really gleaned, because at the time it went unappreciated by myself. i wish i'd paid attention, now; i'd love some of that smokey, nuttyish blended eggplant dip. she served it with a swirl of olive oil and sliced onion and fresh sliced tomato.
she loved to bake and had quite the repotoire. i remember getting a kitchen dinette chair, and pushing it to the cupboard to climb up high enough to steal nestle toll house chocolate chips. i also remember truly being suprised as the same bag seemed to dwindle so quickly. i was a skinny little thing, one day a hard wind blew me up on my toes in the schoolyard. funny the things we remember, eh.

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 1/28/2006 5:28:42 PM | I grew up in the American South.. My grandmother was a beautiful woman with a tremendous figure She couldnt cook for nothing..Her "specialties" were ham sandwiches on white bread w/ her "secret" ingredient . ( black pepper) and those layered biscuits that came in a can .. if we ever made fun of her she always said.. "well your papa didn't marry me for my cookin " ( over 50 years o' bliss) I hate ham sandwiches..but i'll eat one once in a while and think of mama mae | |

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 2/2/2006 1:36:13 PM | Well Princess, Today I wouldn't eat that either, but when we were younger that was all there was. My parents were in the service, and not much money, with 4 small children. Our favorite meal when things were good was Sunday, we would have Roast Beef, mashed potatoes, gravey, corn and a large glass of milk. Back then the only time we went out to dinner, was when Mom didn't feel like cooking and we went to Kentucky Fried. Now it seems I barely ever eat in, I always seem to go out. | |

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 2/12/2006 8:22:47 PM | Three os my all time faves, from childhood till today.
1) Those Whole plumbs in a ball of dough 2) Goulash (beef) from a long time family recipie (email me for it if you like) 3) Vepro/Knedlo,Zeli (translation Pork with dumplings, and a huge side of sauerkraut) 4) Breaded Pork liver (my all time fave, I find people don't like it so much, because it is a bit rough to prepare, and rarely, unless by a pro chef, have I seen it prepared so it is palatable) 5) Veal schnitzels 6) Home made burgers 7) home made pizza
and a whole lot more.
Sounds like you came from a european family, by your list of faves, where abouts from?
Cheers

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 2/24/2006 3:21:35 PM | | Dad was a part time trapper, was feeding 10 of us. Remember when I was about 8, he roasted a whole beaver, can still see those eyes, glazed over. Our house you ate what was on the table or starved. Don't remember much of taste, but was only a skeleton left when we were done.(and the glazed eyes) Mom never let him cook one again. Stinky rascal and made a mess of her oven. PS dad used to cook it for dog food. Kinda makes one wonder where we fit in in the family. lol | |
