I remember, when I was young, my father would prepare this really delightful stew-like dish (and like anything else, was eaten over white rice).

It had different veggies and what-not, and these tasty little shelled things that were no bigger than my thumbnail that we'd either suck out of the shell or poke out with a fork...

I remember eating it fairly often...

Then my father decided to make a version with much larger shelled things in place of the little ones.

That's when I found out, they were snails....

My mom used to make Mustard Greens and no matter how she made them they sucked. And my Aunt makes this horrid Carrot Casserole each Thanksgiving. Each year, I'm subjected to eating that hateful food.

Having great cooks in my family.. ( mom and grandma and both teaching me how to cook) mom had several dishes that Dad loved. I think he was the only one that did lolol, that us kids had to suffer through..

One was Split Pea Soup and the other was Liver and Onions.. my sister and I used to fight over the ketchup bottle on the last one lolol..

My favs growing up..

Mom's chili especially the next day if there was any left..
Mom's metloaf..

And What I miss the most Was her New England boiled Dinner.. to this day I still cant get mine to come out like hers did lol

When I was a kid I hated liver, and spinach eeck!!! Used to drown the liver in ketchup, and when we had spinach, I would put it on my brothers plate, or do the " I'm full " routine....that never works with food thats supposed to be good for you

I was really picky when I was young - -I wouldn't eat pasta sauce because there are small bits of onion in almost every sauce out there and I haaaaated onion. I would instead put ketchup on my pasta - spaghetti, rotini, etc. and I refused lasagne. My tastes have since changed, thankfully.

Also, my Dad always tried to feed my sister and I some crazy seafood dishes like shark and eel (crazy for me, probably not so much for others), and I just couldn't be bothered as I would only tolerate fish sticks back then.

in honor of my mother's memory (st patty's day marks the anniversary of her death) and it was in part her cooking that inspired my love of all types of cooking as well as the creation of this thread in the first place.

so i'm appealing to you for authentic rumanian, german, hungarian or other eastern block recipes. i haven't been able to properly recreate her veal schnitzle, so thin and with a great light breading, her fried chicken, or any of her light pastries except pies and my own version of strudel...

thanking you in advance, and for all these great responses!

Yeah, me Mum's British bland or burnt cooking inspired me to cook, too.

Bad food:

Cabbage roles - damn I hate them.

Soggy and overcooked, butter slopped spinach - gag.

Ham, of any kind. And Spam - yes, we actually had Spam on the table once or twice a month - double Bleh.

It look me a while to warm up to porkchops; once I learned how to cook them properly, I liked them again.

What Ma could do, she could do well:

Roast beef. Unbelievable, but she managed to keep them from being overcooked.

City Chicken (I posted this elsewhere) and regular chicken, in its various reincarnation as a pot pie, stew, and sauced baked chicken. Not too shabby.

She made very good split pea soup and chicken noodle soup, too.

my mom's cabbage rolls were SO good~ spicy and tender, all that loving roasted crispy buttery cabbage swimming in her homemade sauce took hours and was so savory.

and her creamed spinach was great with a fried egg; both atop a crisp burger n homemade french fries. such a cardio scare though, i saute spinach with garlic and eat it raw in sandwiches, in salads, sneak it into soups...

not into the ham or faux ham:spam at all; no thanks; pass!

and beef tongue, no way mom would even try that on us; thank God!

Clearly, I was born into the wrong family. My mother in law was a killer cook, and her Mother (who treated me like a granddaughter, bless her heart) was even better.

*snaps fingers* darn I miss those Sunday dinners at my ex's parents or his grandma's house. I even liked there version of ham, served at Easter and often at Christmas, too.

Yup, I love raw spinach too, not the cooked stuff, 'cept maybe lightly sauteed in succulent bacon fat and garlic dressing, added to an omelette. Never had broccoli, cauliflower or artichoke, til I ate with the inlaws - parents were the peas, string beans and carrot types.

No wonder I hate the standard peas and carrots fare.

I love spinach any way!

One of my favorite childhood memories is mom and I walking back after working in the patch and she would spy the wild asparagus growing around the city hall, which was such an important city hall that it never got mowed so the grass around it was waist high and had this wild asparagus growing in it. We'd come back with paring knives and harvest the asparagus. Fantastic stuff, nothing fresher!

My aunt's homemade chokecherry jam for which we used to pick the chokecherries by the ice cream pail full providing the bears were not there.

Always hated peas until I was sent to pick them and I discovered the only way I liked peas was with my belly in the dirt eating them fresh from the vine. Can't stand cooked peas to this day -- they are the textural equivalent of little balls of overcooked excretement! Yech!

My favorite childhood memory? The first northern I caught. Then preparing it by the water pump. I cut off the head and threw it in this baby tub of water, gutted it, fileted it. Went inside, battered and ate it. Came back outside later to clean up my mess and realized while the fish was inside my stomache being digested that northern's head was still making the motions of the gills moving like it was breathing. The eyes still looked alive, too.

"it is said that in the great white north...the mighty pike will not die till the sun goes down"...(they dont actually say that random entry...it just sounded cool)......i got bit by a pike once...the anti-coagulant in its mouth made my thumb bleed for about 6 hours,,,
i detested fish of any kind as a kid...pickerel...(walleyes) are excellent tho as is pike if they are northerns and caught in cold water
speckled trout is good too...
the grossest thing i ever tried...but i did actually like it at first...was tongue...i was about 9 or 10...eating at my aunts house one day...i was noshin on a plate of cold cuts...this one particularily innocuous slice of meat tasted pretty good so i scarfed a whole bunch down...i asked auntie what that stuff was...she said tongue...it tasted better going into my stomach than it did comin out...
my g/f and i were in wisconsin dells one year...eating at dennys...i never even heard of grits before but i saw them on the menu and inquired about them...after hearing how disgusting they were from a whole bunch of ppl i decided...i'll try them...i dont know what all the flap was about...grits are just another hot cereal...i think they are wheat hearts...i liked'em
my most all time fave treat from childhood was cheese pie...its almost like a quiche...i think theres 5 kinds of cheeses in it...or 4...i'd hafta look at the recipe...
old and medium cheddar...cottage cheese...(or ricotta)...parmesan i think...and romano...theres also bits of ham and pepperoni in it as well as eggs..its baked in a crust with a top layer of crust...the top has holes cut in it to allow steam to escape...
i am very reluctant to post this recipe cuz granny brought the basic recipe over from italy in 1894 and its been in the family...closely guarded ever since...
oh ya..all time worst food...for me anyway...brussel sprouts...(i just burped up cud typing the name)...they just disgust me...same as turnips...ewww ewww ewww

I'm with you Fist, I had tongue once when my dad was taking tongue sandwiches to work in his lunch bucket. Eeeewww! I mean I'm adventurous but sh*%! If they want to torture me in hell, they know what to feed me.

Favorite kid memory is my mom's lasagne. My grandma's chop suey was my first exposure to "asian" food as a kid. I loved it! Asked for it on my birthdays. Tried it again as an adult and found it to be really salty, msg laden, over-cooked veggies and soggy meat. Uck. But as a kid, it rocked. Maybe my grandma just doesn't cook like she used to.

The worst thing I remember was beef liver and onions - the smell alone, even today, makes me gag. The funny thing is, I LOVE deep fried chicken livers.

The best thing I remember is my mom's Red Velvet cake and her cheese grits (not together, of course!). We still have them for holidays.

^^^who....lol you just reminded me of my mom's "Mock Apple Pie"!!! I know there's not supposed to be any apples in it, but I don't think there was an apple anywhere near the kitchen when she made it! It does look exactly like one, though. img src=http://www.plentyoffish.com/smiles/icon_211.gif border=0>

For those who've never tried it, try it and see if you can taste the imaginary apples!

Mock Apple Pie

Pastry for two-crust 9-inch pie
36 RITZ Crackers, coarsely broken (about 1 3/4 cups crumbs)
1 3/4 cups water
2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons cream of tartar
2 tablespoons lemon juice
Grated peel of one lemon
2 tablespoons margarine or butter
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1. Roll out half the pastry and line a 9-inch pie plate. Place
cracker crumbs in prepared crust; set aside.

2. Heat water, sugar and cream of tartar to a boil in saucepan
over high heat; simmer for 15 minutes. Add lemon juice and peel;
cool.

3. Pour syrup over cracker crumbs. Dot with margarine or butter;
sprinkle with cinnamon. Roll out remaining pastry; place over pie.
Trim, seal and flute edges. Slit top crust to allow steam to escape.

4. Bake at 425 F for 30 to 35 minutes or until crust is crisp
and golden. Cool completely.

Makes 10 servings

My dad used to do the mock apple pie thing...but, get this.....instead of the traditional recipe, LOL, he would use ZUCCHINI!! I swear, instead of apples, he would use zucchini and the rest of the recipe would be the same!

Also, I never really liked veggies growing up.....my mom used to boil ALL of them, throw an onion in it and call it done.....Broccoli was always very dark, lol.....asparagus, was never a little crisp..... I finally got it figured out.....learned to love veggies and i showed mom how to make them so that they actually TASTED good, LOL! Oh, bless her heart....

However, every Sunday she made the best roast on the planet and her hot chocolate cake that she made from scratch....my oh my....

Anyone remember Creamola foam from childhood? It is both a good and bad food - good because it tasted nice, bad because it melted your teeth in a femptosecond!

My father used to spend Sunday mornings down the refuse dump with his air rifle trying to bag us a seagull for our Sunday roast and because rhubarb grew in abundance in our garden it was often used as a substitute for potatoes and roasted.
