The worst: lentil soup with pork fat cubes, macaroni and cheese, rice pudding, semolina pudding. Sludgy cooked spinach. Green liver for school lunches.
The best: fresh french bread with unsalted butter and strawberry jam, meringue cases filled with fresh cream and strawberries, white asparagus and new potatoes, home made cheesecake. Curries with sultanas and slivered almonds seem to stick in my mind from school lunches.

My mum and grandmother were fantastic cooks and bakers. I do okay, hate cooking for one though.

You know it’s funny. Growing up we weren’t extremely well off and my mother had to make some simple meals. One in particular was a tomato, and beef, chicken or turkey bone based soup with home made egg noodles. Now when we were kids that soup lost popularity with us. Guess we had it a little too often. But now when mom (76 yrs young), makes that soup my sister, bother, and my family all get together for this soup. You see now to us it is a real treat. Funny how a simple childhood meal, can bring families together again.

My mom was an excellent cook until my dad died. She just gave up, many times we would look at the mess on our plates and wonder how much alcohol she had consumed that day..

Before he died, she made fried chicken, mashed potatoes, gravy. Cat fish to die for, fried mushrooms, the list goes on. She gardened and canned all our vegetables, made dill pickles that tasted better than any store bought.

She baked bread, made donuts, and the best coffee. The pot was always full and always fresh. Once my dad died she just crawled in a bottle and never came out. She died about fifteen years ago. They say we mirror our parents, well I'm a widow at about the same age my mother was, but I have not resorted to alcohol thank god.

The secret to good coffee is the old swedish coffee. I simplified it down to adding two egg shells with the grounds. They seem to neutralize the worst of the acids and no need for a whole egg in the cup.

As a kid, growing up in England in the 60's, mom basically deepfried everything and cooked it till it looked like something the cat had coughed up! And for the longest time I thought that was how food was cooked! Bless her! She is a wonderful mom, but her cooking.........not so wonderful!

But to this day I still love chips, egg and beans. A solid stalpe of Englands working class. Cheap but filling. Not very nutritious, but it hit the spot! And any Limey reading this will know exactly what that is.

And chip butties!! You can't beat 'em!

The worst food I remember from childhood was a "stew" my mother made from ground beef, canned peas and your guess is as good as mine as to what else except flavour ... completely lacking. Served over white bread ... blech.

Next worst might be Krapt Dinner.

Best food ... a soft boiled egg with my grandfather every morning. It was a routine I cherished ... he'd cut the top off his egg and give it to me and we'd eat together.

I grew up in a border town in Arizona. One the greatest foods I miss, is street tacos. We would head over to a small town called Algodones and go straight to the food vendors that cooked their food on the street. Who cares what meat it was, it was great and cheap.

i do both, they all end up in boiling water and sometimes it seems easier with a sharp knife and others i use a spoon to quickly coax them into their bath. i save the leftovers and flash fry them for a crispy outer texture too; but it's been a long time since i've made them.

my mom made a dry roux for them sometimes, but i never mastered the technique; mine always seemed burnt!

how do you make yours?

My Mom used to buy this meat...(or was it??) called 'steakettes'...some sort of ground up meat that I could barely choke down. I would sit at the table for hours trying to feed the crap to the dog so I wouldn't have to eat it. Just the thought makes me want to gag!!! LOL

My Mom was kind of a bland cook...but I miss her cooking...

Mom's liver and onions! yuck! I think she cooked it one days when we (me, my three sisters, and brother) were particularly bratty!
Chocolate, not that I didn't like it, but I used to break out in hives in between my fingers whenever I ate it. Thankfully, I outgrew that one!

My favorite dish was (and still is) my mom's Norweigian/Italian spaghetti sauce. We had it every Saturday night for dinner, with carrot sticks and I would get a sip of my dad's Budweiser. Sorry - can't share this recipe in the "spaghetti recipe" thread!

My worst memory was a rice casserole that Mom made. We had it a lot, and I liked it until the night I threw it up right after dinner - ewwwwww!! Never ate it again.

I will never, ever, EVER touch meatloaf again as long as I live. At the cafeteria in college it was the funkiest looking shit I'd ever seen - colored flecks of SOMETHING in it........ I would have to walk out of the cafeteria on meatloaf day with the heebie-jeebies. I haven't touched meatloaf in the last 25 years.

As we get older, or tatses get more sophisticated. And what I ate as a kid...have no desire to eat some of it now.

The Grainy instant mashed taters in the original foil covered TV dinners.

There was a field close to my house where the neighbourhood kids and I would gather to play softball or indulge ourselves in bug hunts. A raised section of it was often covered with wild strawberries and whenever I'd pick some, I'd take them home and my grandmother (who lived with us) would always (and quite happily) whip together a pie within no time. I swear that I still remember the smell as she baked them.

Liver - my mom would cook it and I would
sit on the front step until it was over -
I would not eat that night - I would rather
starve than eat liver-
Foods I remember - artichokes stuffed with breadcrumbs
and garlic- homemade raviolis - homemade pizza - homemade
canolis -Cuccidahtis - sicilian fig cookies we make together - - oh and
biscotti - but not like the ones you buy - these are round
with black pepper you boil them and then you bake them
- and you dip them in coffee -

I grew up in Northeast Texas. The food I grew up on is called "Soul Food" nowadays...lol.

Meatloaf.....hated it as a child...but like it now with lots of catsup!

Pinto Beans, served with soft fried potatoes and cornbread (yum!)

Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, white gravy, and green beans

Pot Roast, mashed potatoes with brown gravy

Chicken & Dumplins

Lots of grilled and barbequed meat!

Liver & Onions...ok, I was a weird child...I liked it

Fried chicken liver...yes, I like this too!

Ok, now I'm getting hungry! lol
