| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 4/4/2007 9:52:17 AM | | Growing up in the Pacific Northwest the folks used to pack us kids in the car and go to the coast for the day. On the way home we'd occasionally stop at a crab shack on the side of the road and purchase a whole steamed crab that would be wrapped hot in newspaper. When we got home us kids would gather around the kitchen table, unfold the paper from around the crab placed like a trophy in the middle of the table and dig in with nut crackers and those little nut cracker picks. Dinner was served and not a single kid seemingly came up for air until the whole crab was consumed. Wonderful memories that. | |

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 4/4/2007 11:10:20 AM | Things from my childhood I would pass up a 5 Star restuarant meal today to relive the taste?
A drive in restuarant that claimed to have the worlds best tenderloins,,lol I think they were right, with cheese, the greasy fries and one of those grape kool aid like drinks from the ever swirling dispenser on a summer evening., in the car. They moved locations before they closed, just wasn't the same.
A small town bowling alley we lived up the street from had a beef burger that was one of a kind. My mom would send us down to bring dinner back if she didn't have time to cook. In the span of about 4 blocks, the bottom of the sack was saturated with grease.. But holy crap they were good...
Hotdogs at the old Municipal stadium , where my dad took me to see the KC As play, complete with sticky floors and sometimes seat. ..lol Hotdogs a BB games are still good, but those were the best for whatever reason.

Having lived in your town years ago I know EXACTLY what restaurant you're talking about. When I was in your town this last summer, although time was limited, I made it a point to go get one of those tenderloins you speak of. What a wonderful experience to wrap my lips around one of their HUGE sandwiches again. In all these years I have yet to find a tenderloin sandwich like the ones made at that restaurant. Now THAT's a tenderloin!!!!

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 4/10/2007 7:57:43 PM | OHHH Man!!! GOOD: family fav, liver & onions with mashed taters-n-liver gravy, all us kids loved it, even my ultra picky brother. Mom makes the BEST apple pie, and oh the roast beef dinners, and chicken-n-sliders,cabbage rolls, and some veal roll (veal wrapped around hard boiled eggs all wrapped in bacon) Butter tarts, and these little treats we call them nun's farts, leftover pastry dough rolled up with brown suger in it and baked. Meatloaf, no recipe but always good, beef stew always best the next day, homemade spagetti mom would make a huge pot of sauce and leftovers would be transformed into chili. BAD: hated boiled cabbage as a kid, mom would sprinkle vinager on it and think it made it better, Hmmmm, don't remember not liking much else my mom cooked. she was a great cook, still is. She made such good pies. So good in fact as kids my brother and I didn't ask for cake for birthdays we had pie, Mine was pumpkin with real homemade whip cream (none of that aerosol stuff for us), brothers was chocolate pie, oldest brother got spice cake. Now i'm hungry, want some of mom's cooking, too bad she's down south in Texas

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 5/12/2007 9:39:01 PM | even though my dear mom passed just over 2 years ago, i wanted to remember her, and honor all mothers this mother's day; hope it's a happy one for everybody!
i've already posted many good food memories i have from my mother, can't think of anything really nasty she made with the exception of liver...
and yes, i know many of you love the stuff, i have to wonder why anyone would want to eat an organ that toxifies waste products from another animal is just beyond me. i was more than thankful when she stopped making it and forcing me to eat it. (thanks mom, i'm still finding reasons to be very thankful that you were my dear mother for so many years, and i so miss you!)

My own personal list as a child Kraft Macaroni DeliSandwiches Peanut Butter cut into fingers Cinnamon Toast Cookies Mars Bars Cherry Blossoms Lolas 10 cent candy necklaces, strawberries and yes I remember the stories too........

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 5/12/2007 10:35:42 PM | In honour of Mother's Day:
Apple pie.
Poor Mum: English parents and 60's ready-made food was the worst combination. Boiled and canned everything. The only thing she could do well was pie dough. There was a sound I awakened to every morning: her scraping the toast over the sink. Whpht Whpht Whpht I remember actually throwing up during a meal of: Boiled chicken, boiled parsnips, white bread and rice pudding. Mondays and Tuesdays were leftovers from Sunday, Wednesday was canned spaghetti, Thursdays were liver and Fridays were fried chub bologna. Saturdays were burnt hamburgers, and Sunday was grey roast beef. Repeat. One of the things Mum made was goulash: left-over hamburger meat mixed with the leftover gravy. Sigh, Mondays... But at least there was mmmmm, pie for Sunday. So unlike most, I have no family recipes to hand down. As for the pre-fab good/bad stuff: there were ice cream sundaes that came in a plastic cone, with a gumball at the bottom. There was 'Shake -A -Puddin'. Pixie Stix. A&W RootBeer Floats. Licorice pipes, with red sprinkles for hot ashes in the bowl. Beechnut Fruit Stripe Gum.
But once I was 17, I discovered medium-rare, mangos and sweetmeats: hurrah!

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 5/12/2007 11:29:33 PM | | My mother is a wonderful cook. When I was about 11 she learned how to make enchiladas (fortunately she also taught me). However, about the same time she tried to make sweet and sour meatballs. They were another story. Even the dog wouldn't eat them. She victimized us twice trying to figure out what she had done wrong. | |

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 9/14/2007 3:43:26 PM | | Mom used to make these french toast sandwiches......bananas or canned peaches or blueberries or wild strawberries or raspberries if we went out to pick them.....I'm really not sure how she got them to stay together though, maybe butter around the edges? But she would dip this double whammy in the eggs and flip it over and then into the pan. When they came out she would put a sprinkle of icing sugar on them and then as much real maple syrup as you wanted....we always had tons of that from our French kin up in Sturgeon Falls who had a sugar bush. OMG....I think I want that for dinner now. | |

Well........ you KNOW I did, and what a surprise I had when staring back at me was a very freshly killed "gabozell" ( for those non italians... that means lambs head)........
Good... stuffed artichokes, struffala and the old standard bologna on wonder bread. lol

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 9/14/2007 4:11:23 PM | thats easy--- EVERYTHING my mother made was BAD- she was and still is a TERRIBLE cook-on thanksgiving,x-mass my brother use to take his kids out to eat just before they got to our moms house for dinner! her oatmeal was like eating mud pies with chunks of dirt, she could not cook a egg, it was either hard as a rock or like it just came out of the shell- she still cooks eggs in the microwave! salt & pepper was the only seasonings in her house. if she made chicken n dumblings you ALWAYS had to watch out for the chicken bones, the BIG ones and little ones-she never took any of the bones out after cooking it. Food was either raw or cooked for hours too long. she cant follow a recipee, got her a cook book- she's always adding or removing something from it-- i'm 53 and my brother and i still remember having to eat those raw eggs and hard lumpy oatmeal and other disgusting things we had to eat growing up THANK GOD for getting old enough to move out, my brother and i are good cooks, and we sure didnt get it from our mama's cooking! bless her heart! | |

Posted: 9/15/2007 5:03:37 AM | Like your mom,,,my mother had the exceptional skill of cooking,,,,I remember being right their doing dishes si i would get the first pineapple roll,,,or the first piece of her jelly roll and then had to wait for my brothers and sisters to get theirs before i was awarded my second piece for helping with the dishes,,,oh the wonderful memories,,,she would also make shoe soles with the leftover dough,,,,for those who dont know what those are they are thin pieces of dough baked and sprinkled with butter sugar and cinnamon,,,one of the best foods i ever have eaten tho is frog legs,,,and to play a joke my dad left the nerves in the legs on purpose so when mom began to fry them they started jumping all over the skillet as dad was rolling on the floor laffin his ass off,,,mom was yelling (Lee get ur ass in here and kill these they are still alive)the way she was dancing tring to stab those legs was such a sight AS for the worst food i had to eat was after mom passed away when i was 9 from a cerebral hemmorage,,,was forced to eat cold lumpy oatmeal by the woman dad remarried,,,,,and to this day will not even attempt to eat a bowl of oatmeal,,,,take care and God Bless,,,,,woody

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 9/15/2007 6:41:52 AM | Oh wow, great question, my mom was just a basic cook, never tried anything different, but i hated salmon patties, ewwwwww. and liver and onions
I think though my favorite comfort foods were cinnamon toast (ate it almost every morning growing up) and the best combo in the world...tomato soup and grilled cheese, how much more comforting can you get. also whenever we were sick, my mom always made homemade potato soup, mmmmm, that was the best.

Posted: 9/16/2007 1:42:56 PM | ....'woody..' your mom sounds just like mine ...what 'sweet' tyrants ...( shoulders up , young lady !!! .....eerrr , yes , mommy .....) ...well , the BEST ever ever soup ( my kids just swoon over it ...call it 'tummy spoiler ...hehe ) ... a nice chichen broth ( with real saffron and a hen boiled for it , not chichen ...) ...then cream-of wheat dumplings in it ..( beat eggwhites till peaked hard , add the yolks in just lightly folding in , sprinkling slowly add cream-of-wheat till just well holding together ... heat up a soup spoon , dig in butter and spoon in boiling broth .......swirl around a bit , lower heat and cover for about 5 min . ....damplings should be light and fluffy .....like big clouds in it ...) .....nothing ever soooo simple and so good , those dumplings just melt on your tongue ..........SIMPLE .........
