| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 9/28/2007 6:57:46 PM | College food can be good--we have the yummiest french toast sticks and breakfast potatoes at school. MMMMM And that fabulous Green Mountain coffee to go with it!! They also make wonderful grilled cheese sandwiches with tomatoes and they use fresh cut french fries. I like the cranberry/grape juice with that for lunch.
Friends like to spoil me with treats---I had a lobster roll today and it was deeelish!! I LOVE lobster rolls. They make me think of LUNCH, my favorite lobster roll joint on Long Island. (Lawn Guyland )
A friend gave me some Alaskan crab legs to cook, and they were awesome with garlic butter.
Good food is so wonderful and makes life so worthwhile, especially when enjoying it with friends and family.

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 9/30/2007 11:05:48 PM | I`m German American. They didn`t make me eat this but yuk! They would boil whole pigs feet in a big pot with vinegar and onions. When the flesh , skin, cartilage and meat separated from the hard bone, grandma would grind it all up fine and then put it back in the vinegar broth refrigerate, and it would turn into pig skin, cartilage, meat and vinegar Jello. Grandpa would mow it down like it was going to be his last meal! Another one they made when butchering was blood sausage, where they take bread and sop up the pig blood and put it in casings. Then they fry it golden brown. I think these would be perfect for Anthony Bourdain. | |

It was in the shape of a braid, and was caramely and stretchy, I always remember going to the corner store and getting a wigwag and a grape pic a pop, lol.

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 10/1/2007 4:32:49 AM | It's ME>>>> So childhood memories.. are for me.. So as a child my mother and father only ate this meal. Porter House stake, salad, potato, and Rofurd dressing YEK> Milk of coarse..... Now remember this is Mon-Sunday.. Chicken was not allowed, Pork nope.. Pancakes.. O M G that was my treat.. and Lefsa or sweedish pancakes was a desert in my house..
So Can you imagine me going over to a friends house for dinner? hu can you....
So my family was invited for dinner one even To the nabors house... Let's say this women had TOMATOES... on the plate... EXCUSE ME.... I DON'T EAT THEM... i said at 8 yrs old.. and the Replay was this... YOUNG LADY YOU WILL NOT LEAVE MY HOUSE UNTIL THEY ARE ALL EATEN UP...
Well, AS a hours went by and I watched my parents leave the house .. I WAS STILL SITTING AT THE TABLE WITH THE TOMATOES ON MY PLATE..
Wait.. i though MY GOD>>> why are my parents not defending me.. why do i have to eat this shitttt.... was my replay.. YOU ARE NOT MY MOTHER AND YOU CAN NOT MAKE ME EAT THIS SHITTTTTTT... I SCREAMED....
Ok, 7pm went by/8pm/9pm and I had one choice.. if i wanted to go home i HAD TO EAT THESE TOMATOES... i WAS STUBBERN.. BUT GAVE IN... GOBBLE BOBBLE.. I DID...
LET'S SAY THIS.. I WALKED 2 HOUSES DOWN.... WALKED IN MY FRONT DOOR AND believe me... God himself would have been ashamed of me.... I SCREAMED AND YELLED AND THREW UP ALL OVER MY MOTHERS FLOOR......... I WAS PISSSSED..
I did not talk to my parents for 2 weeks.. and i mean this.. 2 weeks,.. i slammed doors i broke dishes, i broke the toilet seat.... you name it i did it...
Well, here is the funny part.. because this women Gara Welsh stood up to me one evening and forced me to eat that tomatoes.. I have loved them ever since.. on everything...
Moral of story.. just because your kids don't like foods.. Make them eat it anyway it just might be there favorite food after all.. lol.......

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 10/1/2007 4:42:56 AM | I'm back.. Same thing with spinage.. but the different is that it was not a Welsh family it was a Italian family and the mother and father would not let me leave the table... and on top of that i had to wash all the dishes....
Gee what is it with nabors that they think they have the right to spank other parent kids and fores them to eat foods that are ugly and taste like crapppp..., Well this family took it way too far.. this time it was dinner was at 5pm and i did not leave the house until 11pm ... NOW>>> remember I am only 10yrs old.. YEP>>> the big 10yrs of age... Who gives other parents the right.... when a child comes to visit.......
Well, I will say this.. because my parents had no discipline in my house, and that I was the perfect child.. I could not do anything wrong...... I broke three of these ladies glasses while washing the dishes.. on Purpose so she will never have me do that again i thought....
NOPE>>>> she saw right through me.. Guess what.. I was made to wash ever dish in the cupboards.... and i still had to eat the SPINAGE..... GEE LADY.. GIVE A 10YRS OLD A BREAK.
So i ate the dang food.... I got home.. and Guess what I did... I screamed at my mother who is now divorced from my father... WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU ARE MAKING ME STAY THERE AND EAT THAT CRAP...... I HATE YOU.. I HATE YOU FOR EVER.... Was my words......................... as i slammed the doors for the next 3 days.. and Well Ya... Anyway... GUESS WHAT MY FAVORITE FOOD IS..
GEE CAN YOU GUESS.... SPINAGE... WITH VINTAGER WINE..... AND REAL BUTTER WITH A DASH OF MARJOANCE...... A SPICE..? SPELLING...

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 10/11/2007 2:27:50 AM | What I find funny is the things I hated food wise as a child, I grew up to love (besides brussel sprouts, I still hate them) Which I use to hate cheesecake, steak and chinese..but now love those three (well can't eat chinese due to it usually contains oyster sauce ...recently became allergic to shellfish!) Speaking of shellfish, it has been my fave since childhood...esp snow crab legs w/melted butter (which I so miss, but life is more important I have decided, since eating the stuff could kill me now) And remember my family going to an ice cream shoppe on occasions ...also to a mexican place and never have forgotten the Fried Ice Cream there (it was different then the fried ice cream you get now a days).....I still LOVE ice cream :-) And have a vivid memory of hot chocolate at sunday school burning my mouth, which to this day I don't like hot drinks , but been drinking coffee (iced) since I was like 11....
As a kid I was known to order a hamburger......over anything else. Which now I look back believe we ate out alot as a kid. Which remember also mom being a pretty good cook... remember her stuffed green peppers especially and spinach lasanga (spelling?). Which she perfected roast beef, so tender you can cut with a fork...to this day no one can make it good as hers. Same thing with her potato salad. And my grandmother's cooking had always been the best ...especially green beans and oh her cinnamon rolls (she just passed a few years ago...and recently found her recipes..going attempt to make her green beans, but sure they will never be like hers!)
Which as a teen my family moved from Florida to a small country town in TN....I never heard of cornbread til we moved to TN, which I prefer mexican cornbread to any others. And never forget going over a friend's house new years day...were I tried turnip greens..collards and hog jawl , which my friend informed me what hog jawl was after I ate it (believe i remember correctly...its pig's ear) Which my family's New Years tradition was black eye peas.....

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 10/12/2007 4:40:31 PM | Oh, you just reminded me angel. I remember my dads west indian dumplings! Mmmm! They were the BEST. You'd have one and it would warm you inside and then you'd be full for the rest of the day. He passed 2 years ago and i've since tried and tried to recreate them for my children to no avail. I follow his method as he always showed me as a child but i cannot make even a remotely edible version! He always made boiled wet chicken too to go with it and we'd all clean our plates dry! | |

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 10/12/2007 8:52:47 PM | Good: Eggplant parmagiana! My parents would remove the seeds from the eggplant slices so there was no bitterness. Stuffed artichokes! The one food I could eat every day and never tire of. I make 'em both the same way.
Bad: Liver and any squash except zucchini. To this day I won't eat either.

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 10/16/2007 9:16:13 PM | My parents were the worst cooks I have ever come across.
Mom either boiled the food to death or burnt it to a crisp. It was good for us! Pitch black toast, pitch black bacon, pitch black meat, oat meal that looked like snot, and then we would eat something to be told it was calves brains later and so on.
My dad never measured anything. there were always chunks of salt and soda in anything that he baked. His other foods are unmentionable. curdle the ears to hear them.
Oh, and no one had dare say that someone else cooked something good cause she would bawl her eyes out.
I am a good cook. Could not stand the thought of cooking like those two. I have been told to open a restaurant. I have sold my pies. I make the best pies. My apple pies and lemon pies are out of this world.
I do not have any pleasent memories of food from my childhood if it was cooked at home. I loved to eat at friends houses. Real food!
I love rhubarb pie. I have my own rhubarb plants.

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 11/10/2007 4:41:50 PM | My favorite food memories are my late grandma's homemade cherry pie, frosty root beer, my great-grandmother's salmon cakes/crab cakes and from my Pennsylvania Dutch background: chicken corn soup, green beans/potatoes/ham, pot pie (not the kind you bake in an oven), hog maw, lebanon/sweet bologna, and chow chow. I also highly covet my mom's potato salad, my grandpa's homemade chocolate and custard pies, and my grandma's corn cakes that you eat like pancakes with butter and lots of king syrup! | |

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 11/10/2007 4:53:20 PM | Oh my grand mom made me tea with 3 tea spoons of salt in it thinking it was sugar. I didn't drink it and got a spanking and sent to bed. I learned never complain to grand mom.
and oh yeah generic hospital food........... when I was a vegetarian.

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 11/10/2007 7:05:51 PM | I agree with the poster who hates oatmeal. The mere thought of eating that stuff makes me want to hurl. It's the nastiest stuff!! I don't even like oatmeal cookies. The texture of that stuff is so revolting!!
But cornbread???? Yeah, NOW you are talkin'!! There's nothing like warm cornbread with a pat of butter. YUMMY
My mother's lemon meringue pie and Irish soda bread, YUMMY!!!

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 11/14/2007 8:05:26 AM | | When i was a child in the winter i remember walking in the house from school and smelling the huge jacket potatoes cooking in the oven---delicious. and mum would make some huge fluffy dumplins in a steak and kidney stew i was never keen on the stew but the dumplings were great. And she would make huge dishes of mince, potatoes, and onions in a thick rich gravy, not everyones cup of tea but i loved it on a cold day. The things i hated were semolina yuk, and fish sandwiches on sunday afternoon. And my parents and my aunts and uncles ate bread and dripping which i still think is disgusting. Ilike eels in jelly as a child my father was bought up in the east end of London and we visited every other week when i was a child and dad got me hooked, a couple of my uncles still fish for them. | |

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 11/14/2007 9:08:34 AM | Mom use to make home made cooked pudding. Yummy. I love deserts. Another favorite then and now is apple crispe. And my all time favortie then and now is icecream. Home made even better.
food I didn't like and still don't is mystry meat lol, liver eeew, deer meat or mom use to call it high jumping beef, peas, wild animals.
have to tell a story about my moms cooking. My mom was an angel, and she has gone to heaven now, but she loved to make surprise diners; Never knew what your were going to eat lol. One time for desert she made jello. In the jello was green peas. I asked her why she put peas in the jello. She said for color lol. She was a pip.

| what good or bad food do you remember from childhood? Posted: 11/14/2007 9:11:04 AM | My Mom was a reasonable cook, God bless her soul.
However, as much as I try to understand it, I still cannot wrap my mind around going to school with sardine sandwiches made with "Millionaire" brand skinless and boneless sardines (which I like) served on heavily buttered white bread.
I figure I was lucky my heart didn't clog up by 8th grade.
With an Irish immigrant past, steak and potatoes were pretty much a staple diet. That was back in the days when steak was rather cheap. I haven't had one since I left home, btw.....in 1977. If I'm lucky, I won't ever have another.
I remember going to a Winnipeg steakhouse, and our family discovering this culinary wonder called "a baked potato with sour cream and chives" . Somehow, this discovery had not reached Quebec City and ( I assume) passed it by up to mid 1966.
Stunned by the invention, it quickly replaced the mashed/fried potato as a side dish to steak - improving it ....slightly.
Chinese food back then was chicken fried rice, egg rolls , and chop suey. That never really impressed me. When I discovered REAL Chinese food a couple of decades later, I realized how great it really was.
Kraft Dinner ? Loved it then, and love it now. Unlike my Mom's "package directions prepared " version of that dish I make it without any milk. Cook the noodles, drain them dry, and then drop a large dab of butter in to them. Coat the noodles well with it over the stove while mixing, and then add the "cheese" powder.
That's all you need. | |
