| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/6/2006 6:02:03 PM | | Nobodies being a fanatic, i just am not into smoking. I try not to discriminate people on that, but we have to think health wise too. | |
|
| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 1:44:14 AM | I avoid the nonsmoker fanatic situation altogether by, 1. Refusing to date nonsmokers. 2. Refusing to allow nonsmokers in my home. 3. Lighting up at every opportunity. | |

| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 2:44:24 PM | ok so what if your a smoker, and want to quit for your own health reasons, I my self smoke i am trying to quit i would like to date a non smoker because quiting would be that much easier. I would never smoke if i was on a date with a non smoker, and would be less likely to smoke knowing i was going to be around him . in my profile it states that i would love to quit smoking, so are there non smokers that will date a smoker if they are in the process of quiting, and wouldent smoke around them? I know that dating a non smoker would help me quit but it seems that if i contact somone whos a non smoker i get some rude replies about the smoking. I am in the process of moving and changing my life QUITING smoking is definatly on the (to do ) list how can i attract a non smoker,,i dont want to lie and say i dont smoke | |

| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 2:50:50 PM | | Smokers beware. I too am a smoker and have heard news that we will be discriminated against even more. Some companies will not even hire you if you smoke. It will become a common question on an application soon and before you know it things will escalate to the point that you will be on a nonsmokers watchdog list as well. If they want us to stop smoking then I'm all for it but I ask them if they can stop breathing till I stop. They want us to quit smoking yet they make it more costly to quit than to just keep on smoking. I hate that I started this habit but for me it's not something I can just give up. If the woman I find doesn't like me the way I am, smoking habit and all then I will just have to go through life trying to find a woman that smokes. I too served my time in hell and that was when I started smoking. I can fight many things but the urge to smoke a cigarette is stronger than I am. | |
|
| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 2:56:40 PM | | I read a story about an old woman that smoked all her life and lived to be over 100. It is said that when it is your time to go, no matter what you have done in life, nothing will prevent that time. If I were to die from cancer who is to say that I would not have had cancer even if I didn't smoke. My chances of getting it are increased because I smoke but then again can I blame the tobacco companies for my death if I'm hit by a car being driven by a drunk driver or a nonsmoker? | |

| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 2:59:55 PM | | This thread reminds me I have an absolute aversion to any kind of perfume it makes me whees because I am allergic to it, even if I tell them this, their clothes car home etc. still wreaks of the stuff there is nothing for me to do except to offer to pay for dry cleaning etc.or break up with them, and then there is this.. I have gone out with non smokers who's breath smelled like baloney AKA baloney breath... yuk! I offer them gum couldn't you offer the smoker a piece of big red or something? I mean we here in America are it little insane over all of this in my opinion. do I smoke? used to, do I care if you do? no not really | |
|
| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 3:07:41 PM | @OP
shallow minded
Hating the smell of smoke is not shallow. I can't stand smoke or strong perfumes... ugh... most of that stuff gives me a bad headache.
There are also allergies related to scents as well as food and such.
|
| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 3:12:06 PM | paintedpony69, don't call someone who doesn't want to be around smokers shallowminded. It has nothing to do with mind. I avoid smokers and being around them because I hate cigarette smoke, because I used to have asthma, because I value my health and my lungs and because I don't want to get cancer. Maybe you can respect that person's needs and if you want him(her) to meet your friends or family, you can ask them not to smoke for an hour, if they refuse, than maybe they are more shallow minded than your non-smoking friend. It is very hard for a non-smoker to deal with the smoke. Clean lungs don't tolerate smoke well and i start coughing and choking as soon as I even smell the smoke from a distance, much less being in company of people blowing smoke in my face. You just have to make a choice if your health and your relationship are more important than smoking. You made a choice to have a habit that is harmful to your health but you can't ask somebody to sacrifise their own health and call them narrow minded just because they want to stay healthy. It's up to you, not him (her). The whole title of this thread is offensive, calling a large group of people fanatics because they don't want to get sick, choke and cough. We made s decission to be healthy so don't call us names for the decissions we made because it would be just as easy for us to do it to you, it goes both ways. I however don;t chose to call anybody names for their choices, if you want to smoke, go ahead, it is your right, just don't do it around me. | |

| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 3:26:25 PM | The discussion shouldn't be about bad smells, allergies, personal allegorical references, social norms, government imposed regulations or personal preferences; it is about a basic reality of human interaction.
When one person attempts to impose their version of what they think is right on another, and the second person complies with the makeover just to maintain the relationship, not because they are driven to change by their own volition, the forced change will almost always remain a point of friction within that relationship. It doesn’t matter if the activity at issue is eating habits, smoking, religion, drinking, politics or whatever.
If you are not able to completely and without reservation accept everything about somebody else, without trying to change them to fit your ideals, just walk away from the relationship.

| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 3:45:41 PM | | I'm a non-smoker. I WILL not date a smoker. I tried dating men that were in the process of quitting, but it seemed that they weren't even trying when I was around. They'd smoke in the house around me and gave no consideration on how it affected me. My grandmother and mother both died from complications of emphysema. They went through years (over 30yrs between them) on oxygen. My mother still didn't quit after seeing what her mother went through and finally quit when she went on oxygen. I have heard of people still smoking even after they went on oxygen even though there was a chance of blowing themselves up. I would not want to see my boyfriend/husband to die like that, there is no way I could go through that again. So if you want to call non-smokers fanatics feel free, but also keep in mind that there might be a VERY good reason for the way they feel. | |

| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 3:48:22 PM | | OT..I have smoked 25+ yrs. I have quit cold turkey Mothers day..Yes as a gift to my mom..(in her mind) But i wanted to quit for a long time..Thing is focus on the (I). If u do something for a other that you cant do for yourself...or wont do...and about the u cant take them to friends or family homes that do smoke.."Last I remember people always have choice to attend or not" Should you give up friend or family for a shallow minded person? Whats so attractive about that person you want so bad you even think about ditching family and FRIENDS??? Its not only Non smokers that can be Fanatics. | |

| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 3:51:31 PM | Ack!
I was thinking about all of this and found an interesting thing, why is it ok to drink but not to smoke? I hate drinkers breath worse than smokers breath but somehow THAT is still ok, I read it on profile after profile! gotta tell ya I'd rather be around a smoker than a drinker ANYDAY and that includes "social drinker" as I have found that in most cases these social drinkers are just using the phrase to justify "functional alcoholic" behavior yet there is no way to block any sort of drinker from contacting me through this site.....WHY?
|
| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 4:38:58 PM | | jamesdean55, drunken breath will not travel and kill you but the second hand smoke travels and kills. If you want to be around smokers than I wish you all the luck because lung cancer killed both of my in laws who were heavy smokers. As for moderate drinking, like a glass or two of wine a day is good for the heart as it contains powerful antioxydants, so far I haven't heard of any studies abou antioxydants in cigarette smoke. | |
|
| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 5:25:16 PM | have any of of your relatives been killed by a social drinker? my brother was so don't tell me which is more lethal..
BTW second hand smoke issues are relevant to children and those who are couped up in a small space with no ventilation, these so called studies are to line sue happy lawyers pockets and really bend scientific study to enhance that goal, most of it is bs. but believe what you want..
|
| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 5:44:53 PM | You are grasping at straws. I got asthma because I lived in European country where people smoked everywhere, restaurants, cafees, homes, stores etc. a€nd I couln't avoid smokers. I had to use two inhalators for a long time until I made sure I was away from all smokers, including my in-laws. Now I can breathe beautifully. Also, I am not sure what you call "social drinking", a person having a glass of wine with dinner will not get into accident because of drinking. On the other hand, if you call drinking a six-pack in an evening a social drining than you should read what moderate/social drinking is. Besides, I have never met a smoker who doesn;t drink, not yet anyway. | |

| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 6:08:59 PM | soulamate4you "you can ask them not to smoke for an hour, if they refuse, than maybe they are more shallow minded than your non-smoking friend."
EXCELLENT point!!! | |

| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 6:16:03 PM | | I have a brother who was killed by a social or moderate drinker and I'm grasping at straws? EXCUSE ME? Waite a minute let me re read that.......yep you said what i thought you said, ok your wrong even one glass of wine is dangerous for certain types of people, take anyone with diabetes, one drink and they are in fact IMPAIRED trust me on this! are they a social drinker? could be. and generalizations abound here, I was a smoker who never drunk. period. And there are a lot of functional alcoholics who hide behind "social drinker" now where's that alcoholic block button ? | |

| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 7:34:37 PM | jamesdean55, here is an exerpt from an article on effects of second hand smoke, HAPPY SMOKING!:
"Second Hand Smoke and Cancer The U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has classified second hand smoke as a Group A carcinogen.
Cancers linked to passive smoking include:
* Lung cancer - 3000 nonsmokers die every year from lung cancer caused by ETS * Nasal sinus cavity cancer * Cervical Cancer * Breast cancer * Bladder cancer
Some chemical compounds found in smoke only become carcinogenic after they've come into contact with certain enzymes found in many of the tissues of the human body."
|
| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 7:52:31 PM | | yes it's all true but what is missing from that report is how much volume of second hand smoke it takes to be a cancer risk. again these points are all correct but interesting how "volume" is omitted. like I said these are skewed to show jurys how bad second hand smoke is for various "legal" reasons I would stick to it bothers me so I don't like it, at least that isn't skewed. want the truth? go here and don't swallow all the govt. bs and hype it'll make you crazy. http://www.davehitt.com/facts/truth.html | |

| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/7/2006 9:16:36 PM | It is very nice to see women standing up for themselves, and for non smoking and health.
ok so what if your a smoker, and want to quit for your own health reasons, I my self smoke i am trying to quit i would like to date a non smoker because quiting would be that much easier.
qbconner,
Health reasons are the very best reasons of all.
Why not just become a non smoker now.
Then this won't be an issue any more and you will be free to date any non smoker that you wish.

I will quit smoking thats not even a factor. i was just hoping to get some advice, i guess ill re word my profile and see what happens
|
| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 6/8/2006 11:26:41 AM | 1) You should never quit smoking to "win their love", you should quit smoking for yourself.
2) Just because a person who doesn't smoke doesn't like being around those who smoke it does not make them "shallow"....some people actually have HEALTH PROBLEMS because of it....for instance allergies.
3) No you should not give up your friends and family for someone else....smoker, non-smoker, or anyone.

| ~ Non smokers who are Fanatics ~ Posted: 11/6/2006 12:55:36 PM | | Hello all, I think this old smoking thing has been beaten to death! I have quit a couple of times and it was so nice to smell so good and clean without that dirty disgusting smoke smell, I don't blame anyone for wanting to protect their health by not wanting to be around smoke. I do not smoke in my own home when family or friends who do not smoke are in to visit and I do realize that my home smells, it would be my greatest wish to quit for the last and final time but it is a very hard thing to do after a lifetime habit, especially with the chemicals the tobacco company's put in to keep us addicted! I do sometimes feel that some people make you feel as though you are not worth knowing if you are a smoker and that just isn't true, there have been great wealthy people who have big cigar's sticking out of their mouth's and you can bet they weren't looked down on for smoking. I have a brother who finally was able to quit a couple of years ago and won't allow his wife of 35 years to smoke inside the house anymore but you can bet he still sit's on his couch and lights up a joint inside when he feels like it. The tax on smokes just keeps going up but I wonder why, when the people who go to the liquor store and by big bottles of hooch, go someplace and get just as drunk as they want and then get behind a car wheel and put many live's in danger but it's ok for them to keep doing it with only the fear that if they get caught by the cops it's going to cost them a little money and a slap on the wrist! Some have been lucky enough to have been doing this for years and just not been caught yet. There are lawyers and judges here in my town who do this about every weekend b/c they all cover up for each other. We smokers are not bad people, just chose a bad habit.....................................................BBB | |
