| SPORTS THAT WERE NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED BY WOMEN. Posted: 10/28/2005 7:41:38 PM | livewire.....6 years?? why so long?? if your brothers box.....why didn't they scare the crap out him?? fighting in karate....where we usually use gloves.......teaches us to defend ourselves; in anyway we can! No just with fists, but with feet, knees, elbows.....we learn wrist locks,,pressure points......I'm lucky to have a teacher who is an ex-cop; he has seen what happens to people; especially women who don't know how to defend themselves; sometimes that could just be; being aware of whats around you, walking with your head up and looking people straight in the eye. The way you put it; it sounds like I'm crazy; that I like being hit. No, I don't like being hit(thats why i try to keep my hands up); but i can take it; and hit back. karate isn't all fighting either. | |

| SPORTS THAT WERE NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED BY WOMEN. Posted: 10/30/2005 9:15:43 AM | Not to interrupt, but I played football (American, is there any other kind? ) I think if women want "a league of their own", that's fine. But I wouldn't be able to go full force if I were up against a woman. I believe you don't hit a woman at all. (Unless she's coming after you with a knife or something.) But point is, woman can play any sport they like, but I don't think I'd want to play American football against a woman, I wouldn't be able to give it my all. I tried to read as much of this thread as I could, but my old eyes got tired. In reference to one comment about breaking bones being assault, well, that's just a risk in football. You take the other man down. Sometimes they break, sometimes you break. Just part of the game, not assault. That's all, folks! (I'm only talking football here, people, not martial arts or anything else, so don't come and kick my ass. Especially you nice ladies!) | |

| SPORTS THAT WERE NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED BY WOMEN. Posted: 10/30/2005 2:27:47 PM | Wergund; don't worry!! If there was a women's (pro)football league; it wouldn't be that big; because there wouldn't be a lot of them playing; not just because of size.......I have met some who have the size....who would coach it? Has anybody noticed that the canadian and american women's ice hockey teams have no competition at the world championships, and the Olympics? If they did, then they would be better players, like the men's teams. Saiyan had a good point about them going against the boys teams. It takes time to build a sport. A lot of women can't do some sports; because they feel they can't....lack of confidence...... | |

| SPORTS THAT WERE NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED BY WOMEN. Posted: 10/31/2005 6:43:33 AM | Chinua brings forth a great point, in terms of women advancing in their "level of play". Wergund brings up a point too... us guys (I suffer from it too) who will not play full contact sports at full speed. Against women. One of my bestest of friends in the world is this really tough girl I know named Jada... shes like chinua and outofthering.. heart of steel... we were in a dojo not too long ago... and I realized I was failing my friend. And didnt know how to correct it. HOW? I was sparring with her... and treating her like a WOMAN. It didnt sit well with me that I was hitting a girl never mind my friend, and thatkind of thinking... is old school. How will my friend GROW if I do not treat her as a peer, as an EQUAL?? Dont women have the equal right to get a shit kicking like I did in earning MY belts? How will womens hockey or football really GROW and NARROW the gap, for that matter, if theres no REAL competition, especially if us guys either dont respect them as equals and dont go after them just as hard as we would a guy? PROBLEM is this: Jada, as tough as she is.. cant take more than a 2 level hit (from 1-10). Where you gonna fnid a woman to spar with Tyson. Or Jones jr. Or one of my level 10 kicks? Or one that can cover T.O.? Or skate with Modano? Maybe part of our MENtality is somewhat outdated (and personally I like it that way, or words like 'chivalry' become extinct) because it seems wrong for us men to hit women (whether its in or OUT of a sport), and rightfully so; but maybe an equal part of it, is that, in most cases... women just simply cant stand up to the task of playing on par with us guys... but how will they if we dont embrace them? Treat them as equals when... they arent? (in terms of pure output, and remember I GENERALIZE, for yeah yeah we all know theres exceptional women out there! Still chinua, as bad as this sounds, I would NOT want to fight with you, and can give you valid reasons... the best one being, that I think I can find some things of much better and lasting value for us to do than to fight... which isnt to say it... might not get rough!! lmao!) Seriously though people, is this too much to ask us men to swallow? Sounds almost like a revolving door... i watch the NFL... and to think that a woman would even want to get in there with those nuts, simply escapes me! In an all womans league... I still say NO! (and why do the girls always want the boys toys, but we in turn have no interest in theirs? ask yourselves that!) | |

| SPORTS THAT WERE NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED BY WOMEN. Posted: 10/31/2005 9:19:23 AM | Hi Saiyan.......More good points! It has to happen gradually......I can take hits harder than a lot of women;including others my level and harder; one reason is- i fight the guys in my dojo, including my sensei; who knows how to push me....just past my limit; so each time we fight, its gets a little bit tougher. Another reason, karate isn't my first sport; i was a roller speed skater for 15 years; that many years of roadrash, bruises(cracked tailbone); and just plain old hard work increased my pain tolerance;I also played rollerhockey, competed in rollerdance(looks easy but it's not)where i hit my head on a cement floor more than once!! If you take a woman who's never competed in anything......working out with weights does not prepare you for getting hit. If there was a women's pro football team; I wouldn't be on it! Just like rugby......no way.....:) but i have a friend who's an ex pro wrestler, and power lifter;;; who knows? Saiyan; your level 2 hit; might be different than another guys level 2.......right? | |

| SPORTS THAT WERE NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED BY WOMEN. Posted: 10/31/2005 10:14:32 AM | | Good afternoon to all... Saiyan I guess I will see you in grade ten english class to discover syntax, grammar, and especially, the spelling chapters. Maybe then you will learn "alot" is a lot. Since I am cuban and speak spanish, this would help me too. After we are done wold you like to meet for dinner? You like spicy foods, right? | |
|
| SPORTS THAT WERE NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED BY WOMEN. Posted: 10/31/2005 11:00:15 AM | I will allot a few sentences to caretobox.. So, is that all you have to say? lol I hope so Ive heard enuff!! Mistake not typos for bad spelling, especially when, with my smashed hands, typing is not the easiest of tasks! I certainly do like spicy food (and women it would seem! lol) and I take it that you do too, being part Cuban? Maybe thats part of where youre fire comes from! And you speak Spanish! Cool! Im learning from Dora! All I can speak is English and ebonics (and I can swear in a few other languages as well!) Ever heard of an amateur Cuban boxer named...Stevenson? he was awesome! and as for dinner... that would be after what? Verbal sparring? lol! or would we next spar over who gets to cook for whom, or dine out??? lol I take it that ... we are cool now? No more scrapping or name calling? too bad i was having fun pushing your brain! I know Ive had fun taking one on the 'chin'ua! and yeah C...well my kicks been registered at over 70 mph w/ 700+lb of force per sq.in., so yeah... not your everyday kick I guess... lol so guys n gals... whats the conclusion? is it: -that certain sports were not "meant" to be played by women, as in they were not the targeted or intended gender when a sport was originally created and conceptualized (like American Football)... which isnt to say that they SHOULDNT play them? -some sports us men will always find womens participation unattractive, regardless of societal conditioning, like fighting and bodybuilding? -that in general terms, women in most "physical" sports are still behind men overall, meaning that gender competition is a far way off, but that isnt to say that women cant and shouldnt, based on individual abilities, be equally involved with rough sports with those in their ability range? Should women keep playing just women in hockey for example, or keep playing the boys til they can beat them, and move up to the next level? -chacun son gout..or, to each their own? Let people do what they wanna do? No matter what the sport. Or the risk. Or the social implications. -that men are from mars and women are from venus?
All I know is that, as a whole, we have a long way to go, and A LOT needs to be acomplished before this becomes a non issue. Men, we need to adapt to the egalitarian society that invariably must be allowed to flourish (i.e. we need to drop our chauvinistic ways and start looking at women as equal combatants... and not necessarily against us, but even against themselves) and you women need to be patient and allow us the time and space to change (cuz some things SHOULDNT change, others need to, and it isnt easy to differenciate betwixt the two when in the back of our minds were still thinking about how we're going to get in your drawers), and you women will have to ... be collectively more like caretobox and chinua, have the heart and drive even when a caveman gets in your way. Oh and when you can take a hit from a big hairy 350+lb 6'7" monster who benches cars for fun you can play football too. til then, Id rather see you on that sideline doing the splits and cheering me on! oh did I just say that?? here comes the pain! | |

| SPORTS THAT WERE NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED BY WOMEN. Posted: 10/31/2005 11:55:30 AM | caretobox.........I'm usually a good speller; but syntax? I've seen spelling a lot worse than Saiyan's on this site......some of it drives me crazy!!! I've been to Cuba; the people there were so nice:) Saiyan; remember.....I can't do a cartwheel.....add that to that list...which includes stuntwork!!!----would kiais' help??? I realise that when a lot of these sports were invented; i think the only sports women did was tennis; in long skirts. The original Olympics? All men; women weren't allowed to watch....because the men were naked. Bodybuilding? a lot of female bodybuilders that i've met- are married, with kids. I remember when the female bodybuilders weren't as muscular as they are now; then Bev Francis showed up. That changed everything........women got into steroids. If the judges and sponsors would encourage them to be more feminine(I'm talking Ms. Olympia)go for symmetry and flexibility instead of size.....maybe things would be different. As for cavemen.........depends on which one:)- How about rowing??? | |
|
| SPORTS THAT WERE NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED BY WOMEN. Posted: 10/31/2005 2:07:23 PM | good point chinua... again. Women have indeed come a long way in sports. Like the olympics. And youre right, the bodybuilding industry has pushed itself to the point where women are going beyond exhibiting the perfect womans athletic form and more into emulation of the male physique... a point needs to be set where we draw the line, and start giving the trophies to women who still retain their feminity, and that good ole hip-to-waist ratio! As for rowing.. no issues even remotely! With bodybuilding as the exception, I think were more concerned about the traditional "pro male" sports...ones especially that exhibit violence to the body, and heavy physical contact. and thanks for the bail out on MY spelling Chinua... maybe you can make it a habit to fight for me? Esp against caretobox... lol Im sliding into caveman (a.k.a. piggy-wiggy) mode again... maybe you could fight her FOR me, say... maybe in a ring full..of jello??? now theres some woman combat I could watch, although watching those two do ANYTHING would probably be fun! With MY luck, theyd tag team my ass and give me a sound whooping! Sorry..but I couldnt help reverting to my testosterone induced urges, especially with...two very tough, and very hot women! Where do I sign up? lol Im soo jokin guys, esp to YOU chinua... | |

| SPORTS THAT WERE NOT MEANT TO BE PLAYED BY WOMEN. Posted: 11/2/2005 8:54:15 AM | | I think if I ever found myself in the dream position of being caught between chinua and caretobox in a ring full of jello thats ANY color...I WOULDNT want a ref!! Kick my ass all ya want! Sometimes ya just gotta take one on the chin for the team and make sacrifices! lmao... now theres one fight Id want to lose!! Personally though...Im a one opponent at a time kinda guy, and I think that either one ALONE... would be one scrap Id love to be eaten...I mean be beaten! And if I was the ref between THEM scrappin in jello Id be in there breaking it up every chance I got!! Now is jello wrestling a sport where both sexes can battle each other? I anticipate no "nays" to this one! | |
