Posted: 8/17/2008 9:47:07 AM | Something that I have found since being involved in local singles sites...is that there are MANY of us who are now attracted to people who we would have never BEEN attracted to...because we have now socialized and gotten to know them. Yes...I agree...if you aren't attracted to what you 'see' when you just casually meet someone...you won't try to get to know them better. BUT...in attending the events that we have thru these sites..we DO get to know other singles in a much different way...kind of opens your eyes to how narrow minded that you may have previously been.
WHO IN A MILLION years...would have ever thought I (short and on the volumptious side)....would have EVER in ended up with a 6'2" tall...big ..bald..black guy ??? !!! 
Well...maybe there was a little alcohol involved BUT...he's still hanging around after going on 4 years !!!!

On a bit more serious note: I agree with you, jazz. Although physical attributes can be extrememly important when you're just meeting someone, sometimes (as you get to know them) you can see other attributes that you missed on a first glance. On occasion, those attributes are more important to you than a physical one. Great point.
Yes...the events that we have are great for this! They're a great place to just meet someone without the added pressure of a 'dating' scenario. And!!!...a great way to just hang out with friends. | |

I'm not a guy, but the issue of weight comes up for women, too, in terms of guys. I go for guys whose weight is moderate and am not attracted to guys who are significantly overweight. I am not a shallow person and I wondered if this was really a very superficial trait in myself. I asked a good friend whose judgment I value. Her response was that I'm someone who is physically active, have healthy eating habits, and put a priority on maintaining my weight at the level it is and that a guy who is significantly overweight probably isn't into those things and wouldn't be a good match for me.
I did briefly try dating a guy who was very overweight and he couldn't keep up with me for ten minutes on the dance floor or the bike trail. I did once meet a gentleman who was significantly older than myself, black, and very overweight. Not exactly the kind of guy I'm looking for. But this guy was so lively, so incredibly interesting and fun that after I met him for only ten minutes I had to ask someone, "Is he married? Or gay?" cuz I wanted to know the guy. Turns out he was married but shoot, I'd have dated him in a minute.
Current BF has a few extra pounds, like most folks our age. He also has a funny body shape due to some surgery. And no as*. I love cute little round butts and, unfortunately, I'm not going to get that from him. But he has other wonderful attributes and a cute face. Most importantly, he's fun to be with.
I do find it hypocritical, the guys who are overweight who want slender women. I don't go for double standards. It's a real turn-off.

I know there are real a**holes out there who will not, for whatever reason, even consider a girl who's bigger than their ideal, but you know what? Truthfully, someone that limited isn't someone I want to date anyway, so they're doing me a favor by not wasting my time and theirs.
That said, I came to pof expecting not to have much response to my profile...maybe I'm transferring my own self-conscious nature onto other people. But the truth is, it's been pretty much the opposite. I think some of the people who've said it's not the size of the package, but the presentation that counts have hit the nail right on the head. Just like a lot of other things people perceive as a shortcoming, if you don't look at it as a reason to be less desirable, chances are, others won't either.
Just my .02, for whatever it's worth.

I' m 212lbs at 5' 10" thus the square root of 70' is 8.36...212lbs divided by 8.36 = 25.3 this is myBMI...thats average and healthy......I think that instead of saying that one is average...averge to what a school bus.... we ALL should post our BMI's...that way there is no kidding or lying to ones self...or those that aspire to date a person based on their profile.

Be happy with a BMI of 15.65 or what ever it was...because I know there will be alot of woman on this website that when they do the math.....will be well past 30-meaning they are obese or approaching it....which means they are obese....

I hate to rain on anyone's parade (Paul) ... but check out the National Institute of Health website. http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/ This site will calculate it for you. I did mine according to your formula Jezamale, and when I saw what it said I knew something was up because it said my weight was normal.... Hahahaha! I know better than that! But I am working on it. I have been thinner in my life, but I don't think I have ever been more content with who I am and how I feel. I'd hate to think that my weight is the first thing a person would notice about me. I admit to being overweight, and have a full length (recent) picture of myself on my profile that shows it.
It's unfortunate that anyone needs to badmouth others because of their size... etc. We all are who we are, and I'd like to think that there is someone out there for everyone. I think the biggest problem seems to be the honesty factor in many people's profiles. Just be honest. First with yourself, and then on your profile. Who can argue with that???? | |

I don't give a shvt what anyone has to say about weight and the average. IF someone is happy with where they are at AND they are NOT in denial about such... then so be it.
Marilyn Monroe was a 14 or 16 I can't remember which right now (http://www.marilynmonroe.com/about/facts.html ) and I am sure not a man out there would have kicked her out of their bed!
Just for the record... personally I do NOT like skinny...I prefer my man to have a little meat on his bones.. I like to have something to grab a hold of... and it can be muscle from working out... or just a LITTLE fluffy!

I just don't want to date someone whose waistline is the same as me...and their butt is bigger than mine.... and their profile says they are an average size....
I personally like woman petite, slender or athletic.....I also like my steak medium rare,
my beer extra, extra cold...my pizza thin and crispy....(like my woman)and my coffee with cream and sugar.....
People ...please.....because myself and others on her perfer thinner people...does not make us shallow....it just means we have preferences like you do....

I am quite familiar with BMI, the World Health Organization, the definitions for overweight, obesity, fat, etc. I am also aware of the downsides and health issues of being overweight, as well as the fact that the US is the number 1 country in the industrilized world for obesity. It is a fact.
I am not unaware.
I for one, am totally honest in my profile. And with those that choose to IM/email me. I state the fact that I am a BBW in my profile for a reason. Everyone has preferences. Myself, as well.
