i thought there was a place that one could go to, like a room at the back of a sex shop, where it was set up....
the two different givers/receivers are on opposite sides of the wall and there are condoms being used! So it is the actual act that is the thrill... how different is that from a one night stand with a guy you may want to put a bag over his head!? (not that I am into that)

Huge risks & nasty, definitely. Usually though the type of men who are "into" gloryholes (though not exclusively obviously -- as you said your ex was into this) tend to be possibly "all sorts of desperate" yes but more likely all sorts of Gay. Oftentimes , sadly, probably quite a few of them are with a woman already, or are married , and are just "on the down-low" as they say. Like Senator Larry Craig for example. My thoughts? They aren't safe. You just don't know who or what is on the other side. You don't know what the other person on the other side of the wall has.
