Different police depts. might have different vision standards as far as LASIK and uncorrected sight without LASIK goes.

I can say that the US Navy has approved and uses a certain type of LASIK surgery. Check with the branch of the military or various police departments before jumping to the conclusion that ALL police depts have the same requirements.

you can join the police if you wear only very weak prescription glasses, but you can't join even with perfect sight once you have had laser eye surgery

Interesting - in Canada, I have a friend applying to the RCMP who is required to get that surgery before she qualifies.

Well, maybe the situation has changed in the last year or so. The reasons quoted for refusing entry to people who have had laser eye surgery is that they lose some night vision and peripheral vision, which of course cannot be regained by glasses.

"I've been trying to conquer my fear of eye surgery"

when a person is feeling his way, then they ae not ready for electuive surgery. i would say that you should not do this until you are more in the frame of mind to do so.

i, myself am THRilled i have done this surgery. i do art so this was a fantastic addition to my life.

Well..my the date has come and come...July 31st was the day that I was supposed to have the lasik surgery.

I went to another location and had a consultation. I found out the same thing. My corneas are too thin to perform the flap/type lasik procedure and no other options available to me except for the zapping one directly on my eye and there are no guarantees at all. I don't qualify for anything else being that my age (47) is a factor and, my astigmatism is too great as well. The shape of my corneas are oval-shaped as well.

Back to my contacts since Friday and content to be able to see without glasses. Building them up slowly, but it will be fine once I'm settled in.
Feels like an "old friend" on my eyes.

Happy to be alive, Content to see...That's the end of the story. Glad it worked out for those of you that had it. I wish I could have had it done, but it wasn't in the cards for me. That should be my worst issue in life. Que sera sera.

I had my eyes "done" June, '07. Basically, one eye is for reading/near viewing and the other is for far sight/driving. I really loved the fact that I could see to thread a needle, read without my glasses or contacts, put makeup on and tweeze my eyebrows! What Ididn't like was how i became afraid of driving! It was disconcerting having "fuzzy" vision in the near-eye, halos around lights at night, etc. I waited for almost a year for the vision to sort itself out and then got sunglasses with partial vision correction for the near-eye. This has fixed the "problem" and made driving less nerve-wracking!

I had a similar result with my LASIK. I am slightly nearsighted in my right eye, but I don't notice it much when I am driving during the day. At nighttime it is more noticeable, so I wear a pair of eyeglasses for night driving to help with this. The glasses work fine and I like the anti glare coating on the glasses.

I like not needing reading glasses, or having to wear contacts all the time like I did before.

I think mostly everyone you talk to will say that Lasik was one of the best decisions they ever made. It is that life changing. I’ve done the whole spectrum from glasses to contacts to Lasik and I would have easily spent twice as much money to get my eyes done.

I went to a very experienced and reputable eye center and got a very good rundown of eye options. There are three different methods for eye correction:

1. PRK – Laser on the surface of the eye. Longer recovery time, no cutting of the cornea, can be done on almost all eyes and can correct more vision problems than Lasik.
2. Lasik – Cut of a flap of your cornea, laser correct, and replace flap. Shortest recovery time, must be a good candidate.
3. ICL – Implantable Contact Lens. Newer, although used in Europe for some time. They implant a contact lens behind your retina to correct vision. Can change prescription and completely reversible. Expensive and fewer qualified doctors able to perform this operation, but can correct more vision problems than Lasik.
All three systems have their pros and cons. If you would like to know about any one, let me know.

As far as what I have experience with, Lasik, I highly recommend spending the money to do it right. The latest trend right now is the 3D waveform Lasik. It is where they make a 3D map of your eye and custom control the laser to give you a customized cut tailor made for your eye. Not only does it improve clarity but it reduces the problems with standard Lasik, such as night time light blurs, halos and glare.

I had lasik done last year and I love it! It was so easy and painless and fast. I went for one doctor appointment, then went in for the surgery which last 30 seconds in each eye and was done in an hour. Went back the next day for post-operation visit and thats it! My eyes watered alot right after the surgery, and that was the worst part. But you take a nap for an hour and when you wake up, the watering is done. It was one of the best things I've ever done for myself. I can see so clearly now in each eye.. One eye isnt at full strength so I can read better, and the other eye is full strength for long distance. I cannot tell you how wonderful this procedure was for me. I would recommend it to anyone. Just be sure to get the best doctor (one that has done 100's of operations and has a great staff and office), even if it means you pay a bit more. Having perfect eyesight after being nearly blind for most of my adult life is amazing.

Op, sorry to hear about your bad experience.

I had lasik eye surgery and it was quick, painless and affordable. I can see without struggling with contacts (and getting red eyes), or having marks on my face from glasses. I remember trying to push my glasses up all the time or take them off my face before I showered and they weren't there.

I would just recommend to others that you do your research and go to a doctor who was recommended to you by someone who has had the surgery.

They generally don't recommend Lasik for people with auto-immune disorders. I have Celiacs disease, so I'm ineligible. I'd love to be able to see without glasses while swimming or playing hockey (I pretty much can't play contact... the slightest jolt knocks my glasses out of position and I need to go to the bench to take off my helmet and readjust them).

I'm also not comfortable with things touching or being near my eyes. I couldn't handle contacts, so I think I'd throw a panic attack even worse than the OP did with Lasik.... if I could even do it.

Just when through the whole process this weekend, and I am ecstatic with the results. Its unfortunate you had a bad experience OP, but I had a great expereince and would certainly recommend it.

I had my lasik done in 2004 and I LOVE it! My vision was bad enough that I would trip over my english mastiff without my glasses. The only thing that bothered me was the "clockwork orange" device they used to keep my eyes open. I've had absolutely no trouble with the procedure and if I could go back and do it again, I would.

I just had lasik on Wednesday. I had bladeless. My only regret is not having it done years ago. I was surprised at my lack of discomfort and amazed at the immediate improvement in my vision. I had severe astigmatism. I had the procedure at 1:30 pm was driven home and got called in for an emergency at my place of work at 3:00 am.
Night driving vision was great. Very little hailo. When I went for my follow up at 1:00 pm on Thursday I tested 20/20 in both eyes. The doctor seemed surprised at that ( but, I think that may be his reaction to all patients).

Like many have mentioned, do some research. I would not go to the cheapest place but, you don't have to go the most expensive place. I had mine done by a center that a famous golfer advertises for. Not the same office or doctor -- just same chain.

there was an investigative program on recent'y that quoted government and medical record stats saying that about 5% of people have major complications or partial to total permanent eye injury and or blindness from the procedure, i'm sure you were told this before you had it done though
