Honestly, I didn't read all the comments but I wanted to get in my words...for whatever they're worth.

When I was having kids, they would have been circumsized...only because their dad was...I had two girls so I didn't have to think about it. I did a fair amount of reasearch and there were conflicting views at the time. Or decision was to go along with 'dad'. That way they're at least look the same.

Now, I would NOT put anyone through that. I've seen it done. It's horrible and terrible! There is freezing involved but it's still obvious that there is a great deal of pain involved. I won't go into any more detail but trust me. I don't think that anyone who actually watched it would go ahead with it.

The medical reason for getting this procedure done is to prevent infection. Yes, there are some instances that a young boy or man may need to have it done later in life...and yes, it's painful. However, this is the exception to the rule. Most men do not have to have the procedure done to prevent infection. Good hygeine is usually sufficient.

I know that there are very few docs in NS that will agree to do it at all because it isn't necessary. And yes, you do have to pay for it. I'm not sure of the price but 8 years ago my friend had to pay $200.

I would just recommend that you think about it long and hard.

Personally as a man that is (cut)I could not see it any other way,so is my son,it was my choice his mother at the time thought it was cruel but I didnt want him to look at me and ask why we were different.Every man in my family is not cut I am the only one and thank god not only is it cleaner and better looking but every women that I know love it and is relieved when they see it(ego boost).I had a cousin that was cut when he was in his 40's good god the recovery was brutal for him.I often wonder when you meet a woman for the first time does she ever think is he or isnt he and if her preference is for cut what anxiety must build if she really is into him but is turned off at the thought of the "dolphin".......... also reading the posting from women on here personally how dare you even comment on what you feel is correct, you dont have a penis and god knows if men commented on surgical procedure that could be done on you you would more than likely tell us too mind our own business.

I never had my son circumsized when he was a baby, in fact, the hospital he was born at would not do it! I know in Ontario, you have to pay for it if you want it done as the hospitals do not feel it is a necessary procedure.

I have seen footage of this done to little babies and I shudder when I think of it. (Look it up on Utube if you don't belive me)

I will never really understand why the father wants his son's penis to look like his. Do fathers and sons stand around looking at each other's penis?

I think if a man feels the need to be circumsized as an adult, whether it be for medical or personal reasons, have at it! There are heavy duty pain killers that you can take to get you through the recovery. It will be YOUR choice to have this done.

Babies don't really get a say in it....do they.

In my eyes, unless there is a medical condition that would be allieviated by circumcision, there's absolutely no excuse to do it. Some of the posters here state that they had their sons circumcised because everyone else does it..what a pathetic reason to inflict such pain on a child.

Glad someone on here is looking beyond cosmetics and the bogus 'pain for the baby' argument.
You think the proceedure is tramatic???,,Try being born, with forceps clamped on your head in a room with bright lights, slime all over you, cold hands, a fainting father and your mother is screaming things like "Get it the F*ck out of me!!!" . Im makine some jest here ladies, but look at the common truth in it.

Michelle82,
you never heard a man say they dont want there own skin eh...Well you obvioulsy havent talked to many men coz that is just not true. Just maybe what you have heard a couple men say.
The bs about infections is a myth. The man showers and washs the skin just as you would the skin around a vagina. Pulease that is a crock that a penis having a hood creates more infections. Another myth.
Reasearch it. There are many ignornant comments being made in this thread. Doctor's do not reccommend circumcision.

I left that decision up to dad on both occasions. He opted for circumcision. I did change my mind with my oldest child but by the time I made it out of bed and down the hall, it was a done deal (couldn't move fast due to c-section). At this time (17 years ago), they didn't really address pain other then numbing the area, and giving tylenol post procedure). My son cried for about 15 minutes post until he exhausted himself to sleep. I did feel terrible guilt regarding his pain, and can see both sides of the fence on this one. It's an individual choice, and I'd never tell someone to do it or not do it. If I had to do it again, I'm not sure what I'd opt for, but I would definitely read up on the current medical viewpoints, discuss it with dad, and then decide.

I really like this since (1) you discussed and explained things to him, and (2) he decided to stay the way he was. What a very healthy parenting style, and more importantly, a young man who is being raised to make informed decisions regarding himself, and accepting of his body. This is the one of the most positive things I have read today.

And the debate rages on.....

It boils down to each and every parent having the right to do just that...PARENT. I'm sure there are different things that we all decide for our children as parents that any number of folks would disagree with. But I'm not raising anybody's children but my own. Do as you please for WHATEVER reasons you have....its not for me to judge what happens to your child's penis, arms, legs, or any other part of their body. I trust that when you decided to have children in the first place, you felt prepared to assume the responsibility of making decisions FOR them UNTIL they are of an age to make them for themselves. Thats being a parent folks.

People need to stop trying to convince others of their OPINIONS. Because thats all it is whether you are for or against this or any other subject. Call it whatever you want, and I'm sure someone will find a way to disagree with even that statement. If someone asked their TRAINED MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL for his/her opinion of the matter at the time, and took that professional's advice no matter what it was, I don't understand how people can be so vehement and hostile in their disagreement.

Kierian--I so totally agree. As a woman, I have no place or priveledge to comment on what is best for a grown man. I'm glad you posted that.

I CHOSE to err on the side of caution for my boys. I'm not a butcher, nor do I feel I "mutilated" my sons. Quite frankly, its nobody's damn business why or what I chose to do in this situation. If we all spent more time pondering our own decisions and actions, I doubt we would have so much time to tell other mother's and father's what to do.

Should this debate continue for the next, oh, I dunno, 15 yrs or so, I'll post and let you all know whether my sons are thanking me or berating me for the decision. Theirs, afterall, is really the only opinion thats going to matter to me anyway.

Parents have no right to permanently amputate healthy tissue from someone under age 18. We don't give teen girls a mastectomy to prevent breast cancer so cutting half the skin of the penis to prevent penile cancer (1 in 100,000 risk and only likely in elderly) is ridiculous and should be a felony and automatic jail time.

Male/Female circumcision is genital mutilation. It started in the 1890's to "cure" masturbation which was thought to cause disease. There are no medical benefits and there never have been. It's a form of punishment. No other country does this except South Korea but only due to the USA influence.

Educate yourself. Why are Americans such idiots? Cutting genitals = wrong. Enjoy having your kid grow up to resent you.

I am so glad to see that many people on here agree that circumcision is a procedure that is outdated and unnecessary these days. My son is almost ten and he is not. I cannot understand the philosophy of performing a surgical procedure on an infant simply so he is not "different" from his father or other children. The way I see it, if my son ever wanted to have it done--I would completely support his decision and help him with it--but why would I make such a decision FOR him based purely on cosmetic reasons? It is such an antiquated tradition with no medical basis. As for those of you that have posted on here saying you have chosen circumcision because you don't want your child to be different--take a look at this thread. MANY people are not choosing NOT to do it...pretty soon the boys that ARE circumcized are going to be in the minority.

Female genital mutilation - Circumcision midwife
Female circumcision is often carried out by untrained people
Female circumcision, officially known as female genital mutilation, is one of the most political areas of women's health. Worldwide it is estimated that well over 100 million women have been subjected to it.

Supporters of the practice say it is done for cultural and religious reasons, but opponents say that not only is it potentially life-threatening - it is also an extreme form of oppression of women.

Those who persist in the practice in Senegal will now face a prison term of between one and five years.

Female circumcision is mainly carried out in western and southern Asia, the Middle East and large areas of Africa.

It is also known to take place among immigrant communities in the USA, Canada, France, Australia and Britain, where it is illegal.

In total it is estimated that two million a year are subjected to genital mutilation.

There are three main types of circumcision:

* The removal of the tip of the clitoris;
* Total removal of the clitoris and surrounding labia;
* The removal of the clitoris and labia and the sewing up of the vagina, leaving only a small opening for urine and menstrual blood - a process known as infibulation.

So drastic is the mutilation involved in the latter operation that young brides have to be cut open to allow penetration on their wedding night and are customarily sewn up afterwards.

The aim of the process is to ensure the woman is faithful to her future husband. Some communities consider girls ineligible for marriage if they have not been circumcised.

Girls as young as three undergo the process, but the age at which the operation is performed varies according to country and culture.

Health workers say that the operation is often carried out in unsanitary conditions.

Razor blades, scissors, kitchen knives and even pieces of glass are used, often on more than one girl, which increases the risk of infection.

Anaesthesia is rarely used.

Some girls die as a result of haemorraging, septicemia and shock.

It can also lead to long-term urinary and reproductive problems.

However, girls who have not been circumcised are considered "unclean" in many cultures, and can be treated as harlots by other women. Many men believe the folklore which says they will die if their penis touches a clitoris.

Campaigns are working
Tribal women
Female circumcision is part of the fabric of many African societies
Due to health campaigns, female circumcision has been falling in some countries in the last decade. In Kenya, a 1991 survey found that 78% of teenagers had been circumcised, compared to 100% of women over 50. In Sudan, the practice dropped by 10% between 1981 and 1990.

Several governments have introduced legislation to ensure the process is only carried out in hospitals by trained doctors.

Other countries such as Egypt have banned the operation altogether, but there is significant opposition to change because of the traditional nature of the process and health workers think a less confrontational approach, such as Ntanira Na Mugambo, could be more successful.

Ntanira Na Mugambo, also known as 'circumcision by words', has been developed in rural areas of Kenya by local and international women's health organisations.

It involves a week-long programme of community education about the negative effects of female genital mutilation, culminating in a coming of age ceremony for young women.

The young women are secluded for a week and undergo classes in reproduction, anatomy, hygiene, respect for adults, developing self-esteem and dealing with peer pressure.

Family members also undergo health education sessions and men in the community are taught about the negative effects of female circumcision.

Health workers believe the programme works because it does not exert a blunt prohibition on female genital mutilation, but offers an attractive alternative.
_________________________
Female genital cutting is today mainly practiced in African countries. It is common in a band that stretches from Senegal in West Africa to Somalia on the East coast, as well as from Egypt (Who have just banned FGC[12]) in the north to Tanzania in the south, see Map. In these regions, it is estimated that more than 95% of all women have undergone this procedure. It is also practiced by some groups in the Arabian peninsula, especially among a minority (20%) in Yemen.[13]

The countries that practice FGC the most are Somalia, followed by Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, and Mali. Among ethnic Somali women, infibulation is traditional and nearly universal. In the Arab peninsula, Sunna circumcision is usually performed, especially among Arabs (ethnic groups of African descent are more likely to prefer infibulation).

Whilst FGC is widely practiced out in the open by African Muslims and Ethiopians and Eritreans of all faiths, it is practiced in secrecy in some parts of the Middle East. The practice occurs particularly in northern Saudi Arabia, southern Jordan, and Iraq, and there is also circumstantial evidence to suggest it is present in Syria, western Iran and southern Turkey.[14] In Oman a few communities still practice FGC; however, experts believed that the number of such cases was small and declining annually. In the United Arab Emirates and also Saudi Arabia, it is practiced mainly among foreign workers from East Africa and the Nile Valley.

The practice can also be found among a few ethnic groups in South America and very rarely in India(Dawoodi Bohra community,a sect of the Shia Muslims of India [15]). In Indonesia[16] the practice is fairly common among the country's Muslim women; however, in contrast to Africa, almost all are Type I or Type IV, the latter usually involving the symbolic pricking of blood release.

Circumcision is a human rights violation. It removes the most pleasurable part of the penis. It is filled with Meissner corpuscles.

There is also the gliding action that the foreskin provides.

I can't believe it's still happening. The only medical reasons are frostbite or gangrene. Any other malady can be treated with anti-biotics or a steroid creme.

For mothers and fathers who cut their sons:

You wouldn't cut your daughter, why your son?

Stop mutilating the genitals of children. Female genital cutting is ILLEGAL. Males should have the same protection.

I did both my boys when they were born. I did it for medical reasons...I work as a nursing assistant, dealing with the elderly. I have seen what happens to a person in their later years that isn't cut, and is incontinent or has dementia, and doesn't have the ability to care for uncut...they rely on others (family, nursing assistants, etc)...serious infections can occur.

Just my two cents

"i did it for medical reasons"

what medical reasons?

"i have seen what happens to a person in their later years that isnt cut, and is incontinent or has dementia"

well no doubt. If there not cognitively there or too old to clean themselves then ya over time problems may occur. But for the person who is not cognitively disablied there is no issues with cleaning. You just clean the penis like any other area of the body.

"serious infections can occur"

not for the majority of people. That is a MYTH.

Doctors in Canada and the US dont even reccommend circumscion. There is no need for it. It is a barbaric procedure and old school.

Circumcision is a barbaric procedure. Many great men were not circumcised: Elvis Presley, John Lennon, Ronald Reagan, Harry S Truman, John Holmes, Ludwig van Beethoven, Vladimir Putin, etc. They had fantastic sex lives with no problems at all. Paying money for pain is about the stupidest thing that anybody could ever do, especially to "help" an infant. Use the $20 fee to buy your baby boy some candy instead! Most North American medical associations do not recommend infant circumcision anymore. What more is there to debate?
