one way to tell if someone is "right in the head" is if they try to encourage their loved ones to pick up a nasty habit of smoking just to remain thin.

Can't tell so far. A couple ladies have surprised me with thier idea of normal and not in a good way. I'm even the type of guy that doesn't look for "normal".

well...I'd have to say that yes, you can!!!

Maybe not immediately...but even if you chat with someone for a few minutes...I can usually tell by the content of the conversation where they're coming from...

And not ALL of the wackos are locked up, that's a big FER SURE!!!

The best was the guy who asked me if I knew where Europe was?!?!?!?! D.

@sanctimonious If she is simple and childish enough, she probably won't notice if you're right in the head or not-good luck

I think if you're in tune with your intuition, you'll know if the person you're emailing with is right in the head, or left.

For the most part, I think that we all have our own demons, but the people with true issues aren't really that computer savvy. (ok, I'm joking)

Lately, I believe that if you're going to be a victim of a crime, it's because either:
a. You weren't paying attenion, or
b. It's just your time (Look at Lacey Peterson)

It's all a crap shoot...what we call life...you just never know.

Nope you can't tell. That's why I assume everyone on here is writing to me from a mental hospital...then no matter what happens it's no big surprise!

Yes, there are ways to tell.

buz Really? I thought it meant someone's sitting nekkid watching porn fishing, and gets a hook stuck somewhere that's GOTTA hurt....not a good time for a fishing analogy.

Really, I was initially too roused to read of your question, but you have the sort of
point any parent surely must have been dealing with in regards to real issues
that possibly concern their children.

However, I must take exception to the idea that "you" can't tell, either because I could tell you anything, or because social scientists or psychologists who specialize in various "mental illness" probably do visit this group and I would like to point out that nearly or even any person could be driven to mental illness by whatever well-cited methodology, depending primarily on what surely must be very real factors that could well make for educational (i.e., legal fact) discussion and that I'm sorry to say bore me
more on this occasion than this tentative response to this Miss's inquiry,
for reasons probably obvious to any number of readers.

Nonetheless, mental illness is not synonymous in its profession with
insanity nor violence, and statistics generally cite about 90% non-violence among this community in question inside or outside of treatment.

What could psychiatrists or psychologists be doing with all those children or persons who enter those buildings that host such services? And what if I meet one of those clients here on this site?

A couple articles may be of use to anyone who would like a more modern view of persons like me who aren't afraid to be seen inside a clinic:

http://plip.com/url/f/5ed20.php
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Szasz

But daisie asked can I tell, so I'm telling. Daisie asks whether we can tell of anyone being "right in the head," but more than likely it would be guys like me who could care less about making that sort of inquiry.

So--I'm not here to make that sort of decision about members of this forum or dating site. I'm here for entirely selfish reasons. I think I can handle myself at least as well as the third citation of the first URL I posted. . .after all, that was in the confidence of a group, and wouldn't this be a group?

Okay...to answer this question seriously... (because sadly it IS a relevant topic on POF)...
In my case, NO....I was not able to tell.

This story happened on a different internet site.
I had several chats with this guy who "smiled" at me.
I saw his photo (normal, nothing extraordinary or strange)

We exchanged a few funny and intelligent emails.
Had a couple phone conversations. No red flags.
No weird pauses in conversation or strange social "faux pas".
No comments to make me hesitate.

Then we met.
Oh BOY!
Besides calling me "the One" within minutes of meeting him, he proceeded to have another conversation with the voices that reside inside his head. And believe me, there was an assortment. Needless to say, I was not part of that talk, and had to wait until he was done.
In between these "conversations, he would pause for one or two minutes staring off into space and sweating. *wide eyes* I am pretty easy-going, but even this had me freaked.

Perhaps he was off his meds.... perhaps he was just plain crazy....
The Starbucks clerk noticed something was off and came over offering if I needed help.
I've never driven home faster, looking in the rear view mirror all that while.
A few days later, he sent me an email. Totally back to normal again. Sounded like a nice, average guy, telling me what a great time he had had, and wanting to go out again. No mention of me being "the One". No conflicting voices. Open for a new day to meet new internet dates.

So... Can you tell? I couldn't. And I don't consider myself to be a dumb bunny.
