| When the Levy Breaks By: Led Zepplin thought to be related to hurricain Katrina??????????? Posted: 7/19/2007 8:25:13 AM | Being the diehardest Zeppelin fan that I like to think I am, (having read extensively on the history) I truly believe that the work in question is an overall metaphor of the direction that planet earth (in general) is headed towards, due to the ignorance of mankind in regards to the balance nature. To pinpoint any single act of god such as a hurricane, does'nt quite do justice to the song or the message, which was actually written by a black bluesman from the deep south in the late 1920's- early 1930's and describes the type of disasterous meteorological mayhem that the entire gulf region has been dealing with for many, many years. A fact of life for those who live in that part of the country, many of whom could not afford to live anywhere but a flood plain. On the other hand, it could be a look into one possible future for those who will surely suffer catastrophic loss if global warming is'nt immedeatly put in check.

Posted: 8/6/2007 2:26:33 PM | you...are...fools! this song was written by the memphis minnie. not led zeppelin. and it is not about katrina in any way, shape or form! the song "new orleans is sinking" wasn't a prediction either. gord downie (tragically hip) was just belting out some irony. and by that i mean: new orleans resides below sea level, and has for a very long ****in time. finally, zach wylde wrote In This River fro dimebag darell. not katrina... not katrina's victims... argh.

| When the Levy Breaks By: Led Zepplin thought to be related to hurricain Katrina??????????? Posted: 8/7/2007 1:14:13 PM | | This despite the fact that Hurricane Katriona was 2 years ago and Led Zep have been going since the 70's. Not quite sure how that relates unless God has a penchant for Whole Lotta Love and Stairway to Heaven (not to be ruled out). On a different topic, my favourite memory of When The Levy Breaks is sitting on a hot summer night outside a French Cite Universitaire drinking beer, smelling weed drifting in my general direction, listening to the above and watching an amazing thunderstorm. | |

Sorry, but I have laughed hard through this thread. Gee John Bonham, John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant taping into the psychic network in 1971. I think they predicted many green backs flowing into their bank accounts first......maybe they all thought they were Nostrodamus when they were dropping acid but predicting a disaster on another continent decades later? Did you notice them at any benefit concerts? Thanks for the laugh!!! lol
That is not actually true. The only person in the band who had drug problems was Page, he was a heroine addict in the few years leading up to Bonzo's death. None of the other band members did drugs aside from smoking weed. I wasn't even born then and I know this to be a fact, hell my parents were kids during the 70's. For a few years I was a die hard Zeppelin fan and studied deeply into their past and I know for a fact that Page was the only drug user in the band. He quit right after Bonzo died as well.

| When the Levy Breaks By: Led Zepplin thought to be related to hurricain Katrina??????????? Posted: 1/18/2009 8:08:57 PM | | Losing your home to a levee breach is a fairly common fact of life. That's all the song is about. You're not saying that Led Zeppelin predicted flooding in Winnipeg or some other incident where a levee broke. The levee's breaking and flooding into New Orleans has been a possibility that's loomed over New Orleans throughout its history. | |

| When the Levy Breaks By: Led Zepplin thought to be related to hurricain Katrina??????????? Posted: 1/19/2009 7:45:37 PM | This makes for a good headline or "urban legend", but this is one of many KICK-A$$ songs by the great Led Zeppelin which I have no doubt had nothing to do with Katrina. Led Zeppelin's "When The Levee Breaks" (7:08) gives credit to Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, John Paul Jones, John Bonham, & Memphis Minnie). This is taken right off of the vinyl 33 rpm record that I own that was purchased in 1971 by my father. There is no mention of anyone else writing the song, however, it would not surprise me if it were true; as any true Zep fan knows that they "borrowed" parts & more of past songs by various artists throughout their career.
"snapington" writes that they were the worst theives in rock & roll & I say they were the BEST theives in rock & roll. This awesome band did "borrow" things from "Howlin' Wolf", "Robert Johnson", "Willie Dixon" etc., but they did it with more talent than any musical artist ever will. There is a saying that immitation is the greatest form of flattery & Led Zeppelin took from their influences & put their own HEAVY METAL twist on the music to make it something F-ING AWESOME! I might add that they usually credited the original artists. If they were theives, they were of the Robin Hood type if you get my meaning.

That's completely wrong. Led Zeppelin is exactly notorious for lifting guitar riffs, vocal phrasings, and sometimes entire songs WITHOUT giving any credit. In fact it's debatable weather or not the member of Led Zeppelin should have been credited at all with "When the Levee Breaks."
The article "Jimmy Page's Dubious Recording Legacy" does an excellent job of writing this up.

Posted: 1/20/2009 7:30:05 PM | Well if this is the case then We should have invaded Dream Theaters studio along with about 3 other bands/rap groups that had the twin towers being destroyed. Lets not forget the fact that spiderman caught a helicopter in between them in the first movie that got cut right before it's release after the wtc got hit.
Give me any event ever and there will be some "connection" somewere

Ok (TheBigAndy), so maybe I shouldn't have used the word "usually", but I know they did give credit on some of their stuff. Believe me, I am aware of most of their "borrowing" & my point was simply that they made "ripping off" an art form. In my opinion, they were the best at it & they made it BETTER whether it was an entire song or just a portion of a song. It does NOT make me lose ANY respect for Led Zeppelin whatsoever. Bottom line is they were one of the best of all time.

Judging by how tight Robert's jeans used to be... many thought he was singing about his Levi's.
Lead singer of Loverboy does a cover of this song. His red spandex is pushing maximum density these days as he sings " Turn me loose!"
