| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/2/2007 8:17:13 AM | Flames signed Cory Sarich.
Nylander is an okay signing by Edmonton. He'll likely line up with Ales Hemsky on his wing, who is one of the league's most gifted young playmakers, but absolutely refuses to shoot the puck. Lowe had better put some kind of scorer on the other wing because Nylander is more of a playmaker than finisher himself. That's why he was such a good fit with Jagr.
I like the Oilers' trades, although if losing Ryan Smyth took away their heart, they lost their soul by trading Jason. Matt Grene emerged as "the next Jason Smith" for the team last year - I just didn't think he was going to be thrown into that role so quickly...another season of tutelage would have been nice lol. Pitkanen is exactly the type of defenceman they were missing last year and it'll be nice to see Geoff Sanderson finish his career in his home town. I know a lot of Oiler fans have been shouting out his name for the past 10 years, but I think he's a little long in the tooth now. If he still has the wheels he could well be the proper fit for left wing on the Nylander/Hemsky line.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/2/2007 11:36:47 AM | This has been an interesting thread.
I've stopped watching hockey over the past few seasons because the politics and the fact that I found it made me want to go and play REAL hockey every time I'd watch a game.
This last season (after several off with an injury) I managed to only play in one league (prior to the injury I'd play 2 or 3 or some seasons even 4 nights a week, not to mention tournaments on the weekends). I wish I could be playing it all the time.
And with all the rule changes, it's like watching a different sport. Especially with the recent developments with Jim Ballsille and the team in Hamilton. It's obvious the powers that be at the NHL don't want any more Canadian content in the league. I say we, as Canadians sould band together and boycott the NHL. Start a new league. Don Cherry can be the commissioner. Return hockey to the way it was. Where the "star" of the team would punch you in the face for being an idiot. Not these beastly goons that can barely skate much less do anything else*cough*WADEBELAK*cough*.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/2/2007 12:00:45 PM | i was just on NHL.com and Nylander is not part of the list as of July 2. Somebody mentioned yesterday that he had signed with the Oilers...Why hasnt this been posted on the nhls site. Perhaps it has not gone thru yet?
Anyway, so far the smaller markets have done little to nothing with signing free agents.
Vancouver Canucks.....done nothing Edmonton Oilers..........done nothing...(well Nylander perhaps...not confirmed yet) Ottawa Sens.................done nothing Montreal......................ditto Calgary Flames.............Sign Sarich....(will help the flames but really a no namer in the list of free agents.
As usual the big markets do all the shopping.

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/2/2007 12:30:42 PM | Announcement of the Nylander signing was clearly premature. According to TSN, it came from a report by the TEAM 1260 out of Edmonton but 24 hours later, there's yet to be any announcement on the Oilers' Web site. Hopefully they're just dotting the i's...otherwise****Tarnstrom is the big FA signing by the Oil. They did still make a splash, however, with their trade.
As for the Flames, how can you say Sarich is a no-namer...COME ON! He has 10 goals in 536 games!!!!!
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/2/2007 2:20:40 PM | Well this is interesting... Seems Nylander isn't going to the Oil afterall.. He's now officially a Washington Capital.......Will play with AO the way he played with Jagr in NY......
Sorry guys, I read everywhere last night he'd signed with the Oil..... Turns out it was false or it fell through........

I am with you man, fight the power. There is plenty of good hockey here. My feeling is that ridiculous salaries, gambling and rule changes are destroying the sport. Id be happy to play bush league and suck than pay money to watch the chumps you described. And I miss the character of the 70's players, their nicknames and bad habits.... much more entertaining in my opinion

Flames got Nolan...old injured fart.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/2/2007 11:34:32 PM | that's Ok...free agent signings are just one part of building a club. A lot of signings, but all in all, next June only one team wins the Cup. Habs added a couple of players today, Hamrlik and Smolinski. The Ducks added Big Bert today after adding Schneider yesterday, but it looks like the Kings did the most today...quietly went about business and added four players to their roster...Handzus, Nagy, Priessing, and Kyle Calder...interesting, handzus and nagy were linemates with the Blues back about 6 years ago.
Bertuzzi might come out of his 4 year funk out in California under Burke...just what the Ducks looked like they needed after powering their way to the Cup last month; another power forward.
The devils losing rafalski today and Gomez yesterday, and definitely the Sabres are worse for wear after the last two days.

That is a funny statement for a league that has a salary cap now! The biiggest markesy all sucked last yr because they got caught with their pants down. I'm a Flyers fan so I know all about sucking last yr. We got our head on staright here in Phila and I think we will be able to adjust to the new NHL. I would like to see Bettman run over by the Zamboni and the rules go back to before the 90's. If your team sucks now you have excuse...the cap is low.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/3/2007 6:40:55 AM | | The Flames addressed both of their needs during the past two days and have set themselves up to sign all of their players that are good.... | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/3/2007 2:13:53 PM | Whoo hoo lets clap,,,Canucks sign Ritchie and Isbister....who are these guys? Isbister played 19 games last year and Ritchie didnt play many either. How are these free agent signings going to help the Canucks. Maybe Nonis is thinking one of them replaces lost Smolinski? Perhaps Nonis is reeling and squabbling coz his mentor Burke once again made some good moves and has helped his team...(Schneider as Scott maybe retiriing...and his buddy Bertuzzi another power forward, who was awesome in Vancouver and is bound to bounce back). Oh Nonis dont bother signing anybody if your just going to bring in some lack lusters anyway. back to sleep. | |

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/3/2007 2:44:36 PM | Poll in the hockey news by the players...........

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/3/2007 9:36:20 PM | Notice the destination of Drury and Gomez is #2??? Which is why the smaller market teams can't get the good FA's...Since they are both American born player (drury grew up a rangers fan no less), they chose the #1 American city to play hockey in....
Interesting development out of Edmonton over Nylander signing with the Craps.... OOOPS, I meant Caps.... LOL
http://www.tsn.ca/headlines/news_story/?ID=212659
Does Lowe have a case or is this a case of sour grapes on his part???
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/3/2007 9:47:48 PM | well if they have a written agreement i am pretty sure they have a damn good case .
sucks for the oilers nylander would be a perfect fit for them but we shall see what happens .
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/3/2007 9:52:54 PM | I can't believe the moves of the free agents and GMs...
i'm gonna come out and crown a GM champion for there works so far. out of everyone...the winner is
Keith Allen of Philadelphia....i bow down to this guy. i hate Philly...but damn...ever since Bob Clarke was canned this guy got Martin Biron, Scottie Upshall, Andrew Parent, Jason Smith, Geoffrey Lupul, Kimmo Timmonin and Daniel Briere.... UN FREAKING BELIEVEABLE. its gonna be a big switch this year. Philly are gonna finish among the top...where as buffal are gonna be comfortable on the bottom. sorry sabres fans...your gm screwed up

| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/3/2007 9:59:47 PM | | Oilers fan cry a river coz everybody leaves their city. I dont blame them. I wouldnt want to reside in Edmonton if i didnt have to. Its friggin cold there and really not a great city IMO. Pronger leaves, Smyth chooses not to go back and now we have drama with Nylander. Like i said, cant say i blame these men for picking others cities to play for. I would do the same thing. its about comfort and money and Edmonton does not compare in these regards. | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/3/2007 10:46:40 PM | The strangest thing about that poll is it was done halfway through this past season. The bottom two teams? The two Stanley Cup finalists from one year ago.
As for Lowe, damn tootin he's got a case, if he's got the agent's signature on an agreement. I think it's tampering by Washington and the Caps should be forced to hand Alexander Ovechkin over to the Oilers. Oh, to be commish for a day
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/4/2007 4:58:39 AM | First of all, that poll was done in april.....
Also, if this was an actual contract with Edmonton and Nylander, it would have been filed with the NHL, correct??? Therefore, there is no way the contract with the Caps would have been approved.......
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/4/2007 6:22:50 AM | flames resign iggy and reggie yeah baby 5 more years. see edmonton this is how you dont lose your heart and soul. sign them asap dont wait till the last second. at least you will see smyth 4 times next year lol
go flames go in sutter we trust keep the playoffs out of edmonton
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/4/2007 10:00:56 AM | | I was hoping that Toronto wopuld be a little more active this off season. Bell, Blake and Toskla are a good start though. I can't believe Briere and Drury left Buffalo, that is crazy and Regier should lose his job for that one. The Flyers were quite impressive and Garth Snow got his butt kicked losing Smyth and Blake, but at least he got rid of Yashin! | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/4/2007 1:22:14 PM | So I've joined a group on f@cebook (is there really a need for deleting the names of the other sites? GROW THE F UP ADMIN) called "Canada vs. Gary Bettman" and also I know in my local paper, there seems to be a lot of support for boycotting the NHL.
Anyone else see them? | |
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/4/2007 6:36:00 PM | "First of all, that poll was done in april...." Interesting how they could post the results on their Web Site March 28 if the poll was done in April. That poll was actually done as part of a larger survey, passed throughout the league during the All-Star break. The Hockey News published all the results in the April 5 edition, and one week earlier online.
As for the Oiers learning from the Iggy signing, all that proves is that Iginla was more interested in staying with the Flames than he was at making the most money possible and good on him for doing that. Considering what UFAs went for this past week (and keeping in mind that if the trend continues of the salary cap climbing every year), Iggy probably could have landed a $10M per season contract on July 1, 2008. I applaud both Jerome, for his commitment and fidelity to the Flames, as well as Sutter, for getting the contract done.
Ryan Smyth was a different situation. He clearly wanted to test the FA market. He gave the Oilers a price and that was it. There was no negotiating involved. The Oilers went up $600,000 from their original offer of 4.8M per season, but Smyth didn't budge on the 5.5M he was asking. In the end, he left Edmonton because of a $100,000 difference. Of course, it worked out for him, as now he is making over 6M per season, but I don't blame Lowe for that situation at all. The negotiating process wasn't a two-way street and Smythe proved to me that he is more interested in moneythan he is in winning a Stanley Cup ring.
|
| Hockey anyone? Posted: 7/4/2007 6:59:47 PM | | Well isn't Paul Karyia all about the money also??? Signing with the Blues who probably won't even make the playoffs much less go deep enough for extra bonus money?? That signing made very little sense to me..... Oh yeah, $6mil a year for 4 years I believe.... | |
