'k i was talkin' to my chum and there's a couple of different ways to do a pool if anyone's interested. The site he uses is free for 12 participants or less, so if there was an overwhelming response on here, maybe we could do an eastern conference and a western conference based on where the posters are from and give links to both conferences so everyone can see how everyone's doing.

one thing he's doing different this year is having a salary cap so you can't just go pick last years top scorers. i guess he's got a site where all the salaries are.

the other thing he's doing different is he's letting us pick 14 players and we just drop the two lowest guys off at the end of the season to account for any injuries.

He's going to send me some links. I think I've got him talked into joining this site maybe later this week so he can maybe get into it as well if enuff folks want to try and get one going.

You can add Carsen Germyn to that list as well.

Well I waited and waited; but no one said a word. Maybe everyone's too young or somethin. But they buried a great one today.

...He was named general manager in 1964 and over 14 seasons, his teams won nine Stanley Cups.

He is considered the best general manager the league has ever had, swinging brilliant deals to land stars like Guy Lafleur, Ken Dryden and, in 1971, Mahovlich, whose arrival that season from Detroit brought an unexpected Cup victory.

He also saw the talent in young coach Scotty Bowman and mentored him to a Hall of Fame career behind the bench of a Canadiens dynasty in the 1970s, and more Cups laters with Pittsburgh and Detroit...

...Legends mourn Pollock...
Beliveau, Mahovlich attend service

http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/Montreal/2007/08/20/4433062-cp.html

Amazing the way this man did his job. His crowning glory had to be the way he masterminded more than 2 years in advance to get the pick in the draft to land him Guy Lafleur.

Sam Pollock died last week in Toronto at 81 of cancer.

They say these things come in threes. So Dirty Fergy and him make 2 this summer from the old Habs dynasty years. or Pollock could go in the mastermind category along with Bill Walsh of the NFL a couple of weeks ago.

They've certainly got the potential to be one. I wouldn't be surprised to see them win at least 2 or 3 Cups within the next 10 years.

Flames are good, but... Something is missing. Their goalie is the best in the league that I have seen in a while. They need one or two more pieces of the puzzle.

Pittsburgh's faith in saving the team, guided by the experiance of Mario Lemeuix and Superstar Sydney Crosby make for a team that could destroy its competition. Much like the Edmonton Oilers in the 80's with Wayne Gretzky. Throughout the years in all sports there seems to be somebody that comes along every 20 years or so. Now, is that time. And who better to guide that potential superstar among superstars then one of its most celibrated Grand Superstars Mario Lemeuix himself. Sydney crosby is the real deal. Now he has a couple years under his belt, put on some more pounds, and has moved on from his "rookie" experiance.
I can't wait for the next winter Olympics. What an incredible team Canada is going to have! To have the games here is truly an honor. Puts Canada on the world stage. Our fans alone will carry the team to gold.

next olymipics dont be surprised if iggy is captain, maybe thorton.

crosbry is good. best i have seen no! better then gretzky he may be when he is done. i dont limit myself to think the great one was the best. gretz played on a stacked team, if any player in the nhl played on that line and didnt score 30 i would be amazed.

mario was a better player then sutter but i would still take sutters advice over mario any day of the week. im a heart and soul kind of player and i love that of my team. skill can only take you so far.

if you ask me iggy is still the best player in the nhl. not cause i am a flames fan. its the complete player he is. iggy is what really binds me to the flames. can crosby fight like iggy, can he pick his team up and carry them to game 7 of the stanly cup final like iggy? its yet to be seen. maybe he can. i hope so cause in 2010 i want gold and if crosby is center to iggy like it may happen i will be a hugh backer of the kid.

remember phanuef will be on that team 2, most likly with reggie. whatr a sick d pairing it could be. but still lord stanley is more then anything in the world. the gold is a paper weigt in the room with lord stanleys trophy.

i know crosby will most likly win the cup just not yet. the team lacks what it takes. its why the sens have a hard time. you need those guys that have been there. give the pens 5-10 years if they can stay together and give home team discounts then wacth the magic.

i belive the missing peices of the flames are now in sight. sutter saw the window and said lets make this one of the best teams ever. only 2 peices left for long term. but the flames really could be looking in the face of greatness. iggy, reggie, phaneuf and kipper can i say more. keep those together with tangs, juice, langkow, and a few young guns that are sure to be great. you cant say the flames are not looking to compete for the cup.

lol...exactly what am I missing here?
The Flames dropped from third in the conference two years ago to making the playoffs by a single point last season. Then in the off-season the only notable moves that I can see are Hamrlik leaving the team and Sutter signing Owen Nolen...oh yeah...and that Norris nominee Cory Sarich. How does that make Calgary a better team than last year? It doesn't. One of the best teams ever? Sheesh smackenhard...it's ok top be a fan and all, but every once in a while you should put the cap back on and step away from the glue bottle.

3 right handers and 3 left handers helps alot on the d core. a coach with a winning past. iggy and reggie saying they want to be here. no more cancer in the locker room of freisen. no more out of shape mccarty. amonte gone. do you really think the flames are going to funk out on the road like last season? best home record in th nhl and 3rd worst road. its a fluke.

sutter singed iggy and reggie. name a team with a better 2 singings? well go ahead. wait till you look back at the years known as sutter and see what i am seeing.

^^^your a flames fan so your giving way to much credit to your fav team.
while Keenan has a winning past, just as he could succeed in Calgary he could also be a bust. Many players to not like his style, personality and coaching ways. Should be interesting at least.
I do not see any real additions that will help the flames much this year.
They will be competitive and make the playoffs. Iggy and Kipper will lead the way. But when i compare them to the others in the west, i see many other stronger teams that the flames will not get thru come playoff time.
Anaheim of course, Detroit as well and San Jose are better stronger teams than Calgary imo.

Hey smakemhard, lets be honest, while Iggy is the real deal, it was their goalie who carried that team. He is such a fierce competitor. Without him the flames will stuggle to make the play-offs. If he gets hurt this season the flames will fizzle out. Think about it. The flames are a very low scoring team, they need a superstar goalie just to have a 50/50 chance. I do not see the flames even making it to the finals for , well, ever. In fact it won't be that long before Iggy leaves the team for a better shot at the cup elsewhere.

sutter singed iggy and reggie. name a team with a better 2 singings?

Too easy! How about NYR: Lundquist, Shanahan, Gomez and Drury (pick any combination of those four)
\
How about SJ Sharks: Thornton and Michalek

How about Philadelphia: Briere and Jason Smith

How about Colorado: Scott Hannan and Ryan Smyth

How about Detroit: Dom Hasek and Brian Rafalski.

Shall I continue? Those are just the ones I can think of without researching. There have been a TON of great FA signings this summer smack...and I shouldn't have to remind you that Iggy wasn't even a free agent, so it isn't like anyone else had a shot at him.
You chirp all you want about how Iggy is all that and a bag of chips. I'll agree with you when he starts showing up for a full season for a change. If he would learn to play an 82-game schedule the way he plays the last 50 pretty much every frikkin year, then yes, he would be considered among the best in the league in my books...and maybe he'd have more than two seasons in his entire career where he averaged a point a game. Until then, he's just the captain of a so-so hockey team that has gotten past the first round of the playoffs ONE TIME since he's been a member of the team. Now THAT'S a telling stat.

where do you figure the flames are a low scoring team? 258 goals for so only 4 teams last season had more goals. pens 277, sabers 300, sens 288, and the preds. leaves the flames tied for 5th with teams like the ducks, sharks, leafs and islanders. so thats not low scoring at all. check your stats.

if iggy didnt think the flames have a great shot. why did he extend his contract 5 years? no he feels he has a great shot at winning the cup in calgary.

still dont see one of those pairs better deal or better signing.

philly-Briere highly over paid,
Sharks: Thornton is on par with iggy but reggie is a better deal then Michalek.
wings-a aged hasek is ok but i would take 5 years of iggy over 1 year of a old goalie.
aves-paid way to much for smith. iggy is only what 1 million more a season. smith wont score the goals iggy can. just you get more with iggy.
nry-again lenth and money come into effect. iggy and reggie at the price is as close to unbeatable as you can get.

iggy isnt just a goal scorer, gives more to the team then that. all teams have to game plan for him. so it frees up tangs, juice and other to do what they need to.

a so so hockey team that was best at home last season. so i dont see how thats so so.

iggy has not have the privalge of playing on many flames teams to have a change till sutter got here. so maybe only 1 year of going past the first round but really wacth the replay on the non goal and tell me it wasnt in. if the goal judge had had his eyes open we could be talking about only winning 1 cup with iggy so far.

and yes if kipper gets hurt the flames will stuggle. not many teams have a #2 as good as there #1. the kids on the farm are getting ready for the big show so its not like we have nothing.

McElhinney-35wins 17 losses 7 so a .917save % last season the ahl.

how havnt the flames made hugh changes to the team. a proven winning coach last season a rookie head coach that never took control. taking players that didnt like being here freiesn out, amonte was no good, and a old mccarty. you have at least 4 kids ready for nhl action. so you figure entry leaval contracts, will free up even more cap space leaving the kipper singing and phaneuf to come. so the core will stay the same. having 3 rights and 3 lefts on defence is going to be massive in helping the d clear the zone. warrener has been working on his power skating so should be more mobile this season. nolon up front is a great pick up.

and goaltending is the most inportant of all. only 2 other goalie in the nhl are at the leval of kipper. loungo and brodear. but both devils and nucks lacking big peices.

so tell me why you think those teams are stronger? just saying it doesnt make it so.

flames will contend next season. dont be surpised when they finish well into the top of the west id say 2-4 aves could be deadly if they can pick up and play like the end of last season only reason why i have 4 up there.

Look, I bet if the goalie gets hurt the team is done... Calgary does'nt have that little extra MMppphh... to get an edge on the high scoring/ high flying teams. Watch Pittsburgh fly this season. Crosby & Co., got them to the play offs last season and the team is ready to soar.
Oh, and when I mean high scoring, I am talking about the top two or three teams, not the top four, five, six...nine etc., I am spoiled from growing up in the eighties watching the Edmonton Oilers crush you consistently no matter how hard you fought.
( Oooouuuchhh, sorry there)
In Calgary, Kipper is the best I have ever seen at stopping multible barrages of shots and holding on to his cool for a extreme amount of time. Under sustained pressure this guy never wants to give up. So , I tip my hat to Calgary fans there. Iggy is great. Phaneuf is a great rising asset for the club and Sutter does have a great hockey mind and ability to put into place all the pieces of the puzzle he is given. The way he formulates the structure of who goes on what line at what position is probably the best way you could put it together to acheive optimum results.
So why are'nt they closing the deal?
I think they need another center/forward pair combo who would help loosen the focus of the media and expectations on a player like Iggy. If the new duo starts to produce from the get go you will see Iggy's mood become more relaxed. Now he's is going to start scoring more than ever before. The whole team will catch on like a Sail catching a good breeze of confidence, and who better than to have Kipper being the Castle keep.
BUT, are they going to make that deal? Who 's got to go, who's going to stay? I am not sure if they will be able to get it done at trade this season. So much competition and money involved.

"Thornton is on par with iggy.."

Ha ha ha ...ok cut it out! I almost spewed my beer onto the computer screen. Thornotno on par with Iggy? Give me a break!!!!! That's hardly worth even commenting on, but let's just look at the past 4 seasons: Thornton 413 points, Iginla 301. They aren't even in the same ballpark Smack...and say what you want about Iggy doing so much more than scoring, sorry bud, when you pay a forward $7M per season, his value is judged by points on the board.

Iggy's signing is on par with Smyth's. If Smyth is worth 6 than I'll grant Iggy 7, and in that regard, the Smyth/Hannan signing in Colorado is almost identical to the Iggy Reguire signing because Hannan is a better Dman than Reguire.

Goaltending: Struggle? You'll do more than struggle if Kipper goes down. Everyone in the world knows the Flames are toast if Kipper gets hurt. Accept it. Move on. Are you telling me that you are confident in your AHL call-ups, neither of whom have any NHL experience? Boy I sure hope that Sutter feels the same as you and doesn't make a move for a goalie. The Flames would be SO SCREWED!!!

"a so so hockey team that was best at home last season. so i dont see how thats so so."
Check their road record. Last I checked, a team only plays half its games at home. The Flames SUCKED on the road. that's a so-so team...so good at home, so bad on the road.

how far has thorton carried a team in the playoffs in the last 4 years? how many playoff points is he worth? last 4 years only 20 points in the playoffs, career of 9 goals 29a in 59 playoff games. iggy in the 04 run 13 goals 9 a. so in 26 playoff games iggy already has out played thorton in goal scoring. career 21g 15a 41gp or about .878 points per game compiared to thortons 0.644. your right not in the same ball park iggy has taken a team on his back and carried them to game 7 of the final.

and i like thorton btw. i dont think he suck i think he is one of the top forwards in the nhl.

sorry bud but a forwards value isnt just scoring. use the smyth deal again he not a non goal scocer besides a few 30 goal season never had more then 70 points by your logic thats alittle over 1 million for every 10 points. a hugh over pay compiard to you can get guys like tangauy for 5 million, or langkow 3 less points the tangs but paid alittle more then half of tanguay.

your a nucks fan right? your team is the worst example in the nhl no in all of sports of relying on one player. if you take luongo away the nucks would be worse then edmonton.

omg slow down the drinking if you think hannan is even close to reggie. if hannan is way better why hasnt he ever been selected to team canada's Olympic team? reggies been twice. look at the +- hannan +1 reggie +27. no way that hannan is as good as reggie.

Lol...you want to compare iggy to thornton in the playoffs? ok how about this: Thorton has flat out TAKEN a team to the playoffs 7 times in his 10 years in the league. The Bruins teams he took there were worse than even the Flames teams of the late 90s, early 2000s. The Sharks team he went to two years ago was what, 17 points out of the playoff when he got there? Of course, you can only compare the past three years because Iggy couldnt get his team to a playoff position in his first 7 years with the Flames. And remove the one anomoly that is the 2003/04 season and what do you have? Two first-round losses. Great leadership. Oh yeah...and Thornton is two and a half years younger than Iginla as well. Let's have this argument again on Thornton's 30th birthday.

"sorry bud but a forwards value isnt just scoring."
No it isn't....but at $7M per season, you're darned tootin that scoring production is exactly how everyone (other than John Tortorella) measures value. That's why the likes of Martin Gelinas, Todd Marchant and Michael Peca don't get paid $7M per season.

As for Regehr, remind me...which TWO Olympics did he play in? Seems to me he only played in one...and I'm sure if you ask him, it would not be a highlight of his career. He stunk in Italy, as did the majority of the Canadian team...guess gretzky picked the wrong Dmen

And incidentally, for the umpteenth time, I am not a 'Nucks fan and I agree wholeheartedly, that the Nucks without Luongo would be no beter than the Flames without Kiprosoff.

Just wanted to go on record to say that the Pittsburgh Penguins are the next Dynasty Team.

I don't think the salary cap will allow them to be. I'm hopping on the Pens' bandwagon, mainly because Crosby impresses the hell out of me, and I don't have an existing team I cheer for. But I don't think they'll be able to keep their young talent long enough to establish themselves as a powerhouse, before having to dump salary, or let one or two guys go the free agent route due to cap issues.

For anyone watching the Super Series, here’s a guy to watch: David Perron

I’ve come to “know” David (and his brother) through my hockey MB… and thus had the joy of “watching” him go through the process. He is such an inspiration. Not only is he a terrific person, he’s done it “on his own” without hockey camps and special skills instructors… with hours and hours of hard work to get from midget B to the NHL in two years. Yep, midget B.

I so hope he’ll play well.

<div class="quote"> He has come a long way since he was a hockey outcast who went undrafted in two QMJHL bantam drafts.
Two years ago, he played in midget B for his father (a virtual Siberian outpost for hockey prospects).
But this year, Perron has managed to play in the Memorial Cup, get drafted in the first round by the St. Louis Blues (26th overall) and earn a spot on Team Canada.
The year is destined to soon get even better for Perron because the Blues are close to announcing his signing to an entry-level pro deal.
